Work Text:

Maya loved her job. Being a firefighter, helping people, gave her a sense of purpose, a direction. Although, after becoming captain, her job consisted less on saving people with her own hands and more about paperwork, requisitions for equipment and supplies and, of course, incident reports. Not that she complained –not a lot, at least–, because it gave her the chance to stop and take a breathe but it also could get a little tedious. When COVID hit, the paperwork had become more and more and Maya had to take some home to review and catch up.

She was sitting at the dinner table at her apartment –hers and Carina’s since she had moved in a few days ago and Maya had gotten over her initial freaking out–, squinting her eyes behind her glasses, trying to understand Jack’s messy handwriting when the front door opened, revealing Carina.

The blonde looked up from the sheet of paper before her and smiled at the doctor. “Hi.” Was all she said before lowering her gaze again.

The OB stood by the door, purse on her shoulder, and looked at her girlfriend for a moment, eyes opening wide when she noticed something different about her. “What is that?” She asked, removing her mask from over her mouth, eyebrows knitting together as she tried to process what she was seeing.

The firefighter looked up again, forehead furrowed for a second. “Oh, this?” She pointed at the table. “It’s just some paperwork, I’m a little behind and wanted to catch up.”

The Italian left her purse by the door and took a few steps towards the younger woman. “Not that, I mean, what’s that on your face?” She clarified, wiggling her finger as she pointed at Maya’s visage.

It took the captain a moment before she understood what had the other woman so flabbergasted. She arched a brow and gave Carina a lopsided smile. “They’re called glasses, honey. I believe you have those in Italy, too.” She cheekily said, instinctively pushing her glasses up her nose with a touch of her middle finger.

The brunette snorted and rolled her eyes at Maya. “Non fare la spiritosa.” She crossed her arms over her chest.

The shorter woman chuckled at Carina’s expression and leaned back on the chair. “I have no idea what does that mean but it sounded hot.”

The doctor unfolded her arms and placed her hands on the table so she could lean over Maya. “I had never seen you wear glasses, bambina.” She finally got to the point so her girlfriend wouldn’t dodge the subject again.

The blonde stayed in silence for a few moments, a dorky smile on her face as she observed Carina, licking her lips to distract her and smirking when the brunette had looked down like she had expected.

“I usually wear contacts. Firefighting while wearing glasses is not ideal.” She tilted her head and shrugged innocently.

The OB nodded slowly before pulling away and start using her hands as she spoke. “So… we’ve know each other for months and have been living together for almost a week and I didn’t know you wear glasses?” Her tone was bordering amused and annoyed by not knowing that small piece of information.

Maya laughed a little harder this time. “It’s not that big of a deal, Carina. I didn’t know you had that much vagina art.” She commented, pointing at one of the many vagina like sculptures the Italian had around the apartment. “I’m sure there’s a lot of stuff we don’t know about the other yet but that’s half the fun.”

Carina sighed. She moved the chair next to Maya and leaned back just like the blonde was doing on her seat. “How come I’ve never seen you take off your contacts? Or even seen the little thingy where you put them away?” She wondered out loud, pinching her index and thumb together when she mentioned the contacts case as she had forgotten the name for a moment.

“I have the bad habit of sleeping with my contacts on. I can’t waste time taking them off and on while on the job and when I’m off duty I usually forget.” Maya explained, pushing her glasses to the top of her head.

“Why are you wearing these right now?” Carina wondered again.

“My eyes were a little itchy so I decided to give them some rest.” The firefighter leaned on the table, resting her forearms in the glass surface.

The Italian nodded slowly as her lips started curving into a smile. “You look cute in them.”

Maya’s eyes opened wide at that statement. No one had ever called her cute with the glasses on –not that many people had seen her wearing them. “Do I?” She asked, taking a hand up and placing the glasses back on her face.

The brunette leaned into the table too, her face really close to her girlfriend’s. “Sì.” She nodded. “And also hot. Like a sexy librarian.” She whispered, arching a brow the way she knew Maya couldn’t resist.

Carina started to lean closer, her eyes shifting between Maya’s blue eyes and her lips. She could almost taste them over her own when the blonde abruptly pulled back.

“Uh-uh. Shower first.” The captain said with a smirk on her face, enjoying the little payback.

The Italian bit the inside of her cheek, trying to keep herself from smiling but failing. She stood up and offered her hand to Maya. “Care to join me in the shower?”

The blonde removed her glasses from her face again, this time placing them on top of the now forgotten paperwork, and stood up. “I thought you’d never ask.”
