Work Header

The little things you do

Summary:

It was Magma running to him. “Oh, Hey Dear Magma chan,” Gen put his hands in his overcoat. “What brought you here?”
“Did you not notice the storm clouds?” Magma asked a bit out of breath.
It kind of snapped for Gen. The sky had gotten darker and the smell of ozone in the air. “Hehe seems like I didn’t,” Gen awkwardly laughed.
Magma sighed. “Well let’s go then. I don’t want to be caught in the rain,”
“Yes yes, I’m coming Magma cha-,” A sudden flash of light stopped Gen from finishing his sentence.

Notes:

Dang, it's been a while since I've written Maggen. Here take it.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

A walk was just what Gen needed. He had been in a meeting with the other generals for what felt like hours. It wasn’t that the meeting itself wasn’t important but Gen kind of felt like he had nothing to add. His job was just to make sure everyone wasn’t overworked. Besides that, his job was done. Ryusui, Chrome, and Senkuu were mostly leading the meeting.

“Everyone so far looks sound,” Senkuu stated.

“Good! With this weather coming in we need to make sure the ship doesn’t get damaged,” Ryusui added.

At this point Gen had fully spaced out. He was just looking at the glass table and thinking about how Kaskei managed to make it look so smooth.

“Mentalist?” Senkuu’s voice made Gen snap out of his half lucid questions.

“Oh? Ohh yeas Senkuu chan? Gen looked up at the leader.

“DId you hear anything we just said?” Chrome asked.

“Something about a storm,” Gen shrugged.

“Gen..,” Ukyo sighed.

“Sorry sorry,” Gen waved his hand. “Just a bit tired that’s all, and do you all really need me here? I’m here for morality but everyone seems pretty happy,”
“Practically speaking, no we don’t but you are still one of the generals,” Senkuu stated matter of factly.

Senkuu’s ability to be so blunt almost impressed Gen. “How blunt you can be is kind of impressive Senkuu chan,” Gen deadpanned. “But if you don’t mind I’m going to take a walk,”

Gen walked, hands by his sides, in the half made trail he’d always walk after a long day. The trail was covered in flowers and greenery. Many Gen recognized and some he didn’t. The clouds covered the sun leaving the sky above gray a bleak look. Even the flower’s vibrant colors looked like they lost their color.

“Ughh where is that mentalist?” Senkuu mumbled waiting for him at the bridge

“Is he not back yet?” Magma asked.

“Not yet,” Senkuu sighed. “This is what happens when he spaces out during meetings,”

“I’ll go get him!” Suika jumped up and raised her hand.

“No, It’s going to rain soon so it’s better if you stay here Suika,” Senkuu explained.

“Then I’ll go get him,” Magma butt in.

“DO you know where to go?” Senkuu asked.

“Yeah, he goes the same way each time,” Magma replied.

“Ok, make sure he doesn’t trip on anything,” Senkuu walked off with Suika to Chrome’s rock hut.

Magma looked up at the sky. The even darker gray clouds rolled in. Magma didn’t need Ryusui’s magic to know that a bad storm was going to be rolling in.

You better be alright magician.

Gen just lost track of time as he walked around the field. The sky had slowly turned darker without Gen noticing.

What am I doing? I’m a mentalist for hell’s sake…

Gen started off to space while looking above a field of flowers.

But now we’ve won. So what am I doing?

“Magician!” A voice called for Gen

“Huh?” Gen turned to look at the voice.

A second later the sound of thunder rang out.

“Aww shit,” Magma groaned.

The few light drops hit Gen’s head. It was starting off light but still, with how far he had walked they couldn’t make it back on time.

“Come on,” Magma knelt down for a second. Gen was taken off guard for a second before getting on the fighter’s back and letting him start carrying him back. Even with Magma’s stamina, he wasn’t a fast runner. The raindrops started to get bigger and bigger. Soon a gust of rain started to push the rain to Magma’s and Gen’s faces and obstructed the view.

“Magma to your left,” Gen cried.

Magma looked to see what Gen was talking about. It was a small cave with an overhang that would keep them out of the rain. Magma stepped inside the cave and let Gen down. The rain wasn’t letting up. It kept pouring making a pittering noise when it hit the ground.

Gen sat down and leaned against the farthest wall of the cave from the entrance and looked at the rain.

“What were you thinking?” Magma asked, a bit irritated. “Didn’t Ryusui tell you there was a storm coming?”

“Sorry Magma chan,” Gen apologized, his knees to his chest.

Magma looked at the other and sighed. He sat by Gen’s side. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to get upset. I was just worried when Senkuu told me you were out here alone,” Magma confessed.

“Awwww. You were worried about me?” Gen teased.

“How about I push you back out into the rain?” Magma teased back.

“Ruel cay,” Gen jokingly whined. “But I am sorry you had to come to get me,”

“Tchh yeah, I could be in my hunt with a furnace right now,” Magma nudged Gen.

“That does sound nice, but poor you are stuck with me,” Gen grinned.

“Poor me,” Magma snickered.

Gen just smiled. It wasn’t as cozy as it would’ve been back at the village but it was still nice to watch the rain with his boyfriend.

Achhoo!

Gen sneezed. The furnace's heat would feel good right about now.

“Take your coat off, you’re going to get sick like that,” Magma pointed out.

“I’ll get sick without it,” Gen replied, his nose already turning a bit red.

Magma stood up and started to collect the odd pieces of wood from the cave’s floor and into his arms.

“What are you doing?” Gen questioned.

“Making a fire,” Magma casually answered.

“You know how to do that?” Gen was a bit impressed.

“Well duh, everyone in the village knows how to,” Magma pointed out. “Don’t you?”

“Not really, I never need to learn how in the old world,” Gen replied. “You’d normally go home and it would be heated or cool,” Gen shrugged.

“That’s why they're a bunch of weaklings from the old world,” Magma scoffed. “Did you all learn anything?” Magma half-joked.

“I guess you could say that,” Gen gave a half-smile.

“No witty remark?” Magma asked as he put up the base of the fire.

“Nah, not in the mood,” Gen shrugged. “Long day of just listening to meetings,”

“Sounds fun,” Magma sarcastically remarked.

“It was soooo oring bay,” Gen sang. “I didn’t even need to be there too,”

“Huh? Aren’t you one of the leaders in their little group?” Magma questioned.

“Yeah, but I’m a mentalist. If there’s no one to manipulate I don’t really have a job to do,” Gen explained. “The others still have things to do with their specialties but I don’t so I’m not really needed. I just do small things now,”

“Who told you that?” Magma hesitated a bit.

“It’s just logical,” Gen shrugged again.

Magma managed to get the fire started. “I don’t think so,” Magma sat back down next to Gen

“Huh?”

“You say it’s only small things? I’ve seen you cheer up others, keep the kid’s spirits up, and even now, I feel better being with you,” Magma spooky softly.

“Magma chan..?”

“I’m not good with the whole worst thing but you get what I’m trying to tell you right? Even if they are small it’s something,” Magma continued.

Gen swore his heart skipped a beat. The other, so somber and comforting. Gen couldn’t help but smile.

“Did that make sense?” Magma asked.

“Yeah, thanks Magma chan,” Gen continued to smile. “You’ve really changed, you know that?”

“Yeah, I guess I have,” Magma clicked his tongue. “Your sappiness is rumbling off on me,” Magma joked.

“Yeah yeah,” Gen grinned. “Now move your arm. I’m still cold,”

Magma rolled his eyes but lifted his arm up and Gen scooted closer so he could rest on Magma. Magma put his arm around Gen and held him there. The scene was reminiscent of the time Magma held him just like he was now but now Magma was able to look him in the eye as he smiled.

“What did I do to get such a handsome boyfriend?” Gen asked.

“Tchh Idiot,” Magma said, but leaned down and kissed Gen.

Magma’s hands were tough and a bit callous but when Magma ran his fingers in Gen’s hair they felt so soft. Both backed away to look into each other's eyes. The blue of Magma’s eyes caught the light orange of the fire blazing. Gen’s heart could have stopped right there. In a cold damp cave, Gen didn’t feel cold. Gen noticed Magma was blushing. Gen smiled and went back to resting on Magma’s chest.

"Hey Gen,"

"Yeah, Magma chan?"

"Do you think I've changed?" Magma said in a lower, hushed voice. "You know that whole thing you said that day about me being able to change..,"

"Yeah. Little by little, but I'm still proud of you,"
