Chapter Text
Ruby groaned slightly, slowly her eyes opened to bright lights. She felt something heavy, but soft covering her body. She heard mumbled words next to her and shifted her head towards the sound. Even with her blurred eyesight, she could make out her mother’s white cloak. “M…mom…” she croaked.
Summer turned to the voice, tears of happiness streaming from her eyes. Summer took Ruby’s hands, using her other to stroke her daughters hair. “R-Ruby! Oh my baby girl!!” She kissed her head, gently hugging the young woman. Ruby smiled as the realization dawned on her. She had made it. She was alive, injured and mentally scarred, but she was still alive. Then her eyes went wide with shock. “M-Mom…t…team…Yang…Weiss a-and Blake.”
Summer gave a comforting smile. “It’s okay sweetheart, they’re all alive. Your friend Blake almost didn’t make it though, along with your sister. But the doctors were able to save them both.”
Ruby let out a small sigh of relief, happiness filling her soul. She heard a thumping sound coming near and looked over. Weiss stood on the other side of her bed, crutches helping her to walk. Ruby felt tears running down her cheeks, “Weiss….”
Weiss gave a small chuckle and hugged Ruby with all her might. “We made it Ruby….we made it!”
Ruby returned the hug, holding tight with all the strength she could muster. Weiss helped her lay back down, but kept her grip on her comrades hand. Ruby smiled, “You okay?”
Weiss nodded, “The doctors said I might have a limp for about the rest of my life, but at least I’m alive, we all are.”
Ruby squeezed Weiss’s hand, concern suddenly showing on her face. “Yang…a-and Blake”
Weiss’s smile fell away, she pulled up a chair and sat down. “Yang nearly got hit in the neck, she…she lost a lot of blood Ruby, the doctors had to find at least two people who would be willing to donate blood so she could make it.”
Ruby rubbed her eyes, fresh tears starting to spill.
Weiss took a deep breath and continued, “And Blake…Blake’s lost both of her legs Ruby. She was lucky, the shrapnel that hit her above the eye nearly blinded her, but thank God it didn’t. The doctors struggled keeping her alive, her heart monitor flatlined here and there, but they were able to stabilize her.”
Ruby was shaking from her sobbing, Summer wrapped her arm around her daughter. “Ruby, honey it wasn’t your fault okay? She’s alive now, both of them are!”
Ruby shook her head, “It’s n-not that mom it’s just…I-I-I though we were gonna d-die there! I w-was so scared!”
Both Weiss and Summer tried comforting the poor girl, giving loving words, hugs and kisses.

A few hours later, Weiss and Ruby sat together talking. After a while Ruby fell silent. Weiss took her hand and squeezed it. “What is it?”
Ruby looked at her and squeezed back taking a deep breath. “I just…I just can’t believe that we made it. I was so scared that Yang, she got hit so close to the neck and…when Blake, when she got hit with the shell and-“
Weiss took both of Ruby’s hands, “Ruby. Breathe. Blake is alive, Yang is alive, they’re safe, we all are. So please, don’t blame yourself for anything okay?”
Ruby looked up at her and gave a small nod. Weiss then thought of something that could hopefully help, she gently cupped Ruby’s face and gave her a gentle but loving kiss on the lips. Ruby’s eyes went wide slight but soon closed as she melted into the kiss. They soon broke apart for air and they smiled. Weiss softly whispered to Ruby, “So…we’re dating now?”
Ruby giggled and nodded, “I guess we are…I love you Weiss.”
“I love you too Ruby. Now get some rest alright? I’ll be here when you wake up.”
Ruby closed her eyes and was soon fast asleep, Weiss’s presence giving her peace.
