Summary
Charlie Shelby is home from his boarding school for the summer and he's struggling to find his place in the family and in his father's life. In the middle of this turmoil, it becomes clear that his adoptive second father and accepted part of the Shelby family, Alfie Solomons, is ill, and won't be getting better. Charlie gets his first love, his first shiner, and his first brush with what it really means to be a Shelby while the family struggles to make it through Alfie's rapid decline.
