Pokémon: Sword & Shield with the Law of Averages

Summary:

The Law of Averages is a (personal) rule that states that in order for Pokémon typing and Pokédex entries to make sense, there must be extraordinary trainers AND extraordinary pokémon. In the games, we see (and play as) extraordinary trainers with average Pokémon. While in the show, we see extraordinary Pokémon with a variety of trainer levels. That is why electric types can affect ground types in the show, but not in the game. In this story, this law will be put into practice throughout Victor's journey through Galar.

Notes:

Again, this is my PERSONAL explanation for the differences between the games and the show. I hope you enjoy the story though. I should also note that I am American, so my slang and word choice will reflect that every now and then.

Chapter 1: A Shocking Surprise

Chapter Text

POV Victor

“Welcome to the wonderful world of Pokémon!” A man in yellow and black shouted from the center of a Pokémon League tournament field. “I am Gawain ‘Galvanized’ Surge, one of the premier electric-type specialists in the world, and today, I will help all of you begin your journeys into this world!” As he finishes, he tosses a Pokéball into the air allowing a small, yellow mouse-like Pokémon with rabbit-like ears and a zigzagged tail with a flat top to come out with a loud ‘PIKA!’. “Pokémon can be found all over our world, and we live in harmony with them. As you all are probably aware, we who live and battle alongside these creatures are called Pokémon Trainers. Now, for our live demonstration of a Pokémon battle…”

“Hey, Victor!” A woman’s voice calls from outside a 10-year-old Victor’s bedroom. “We have a visitor!”

“Coming Mom!” Victor called out as he quickly paused the video on the TV before rushing out to see who it was. Victor stopped to change into his usual clothes, a red three-fourths sleeved polo with blue jeans and brown chukka boots. He also grabbed his favorite red and gray knit cap to cover up his bed head.

With that, Victor hurried out of his room, only to bump into a tall man dressed in black with yellow accents. He had a set of golden glasses covering an amused glint in his brown eyes while he twirled a black scally cap around on his finger. He wore a long black overcoat with yellow detailing on top of a blue knit sweater and black jeans. If not for the belt of Pokéballs on his waist and the cup of coffee in his free hand, Victor might have been afraid of the strange man. However, upon a second glance, Victor suddenly recognized the man. “Y-you’re…” Victor sputtered.

Gawain ‘Galvanized’ Surge laughed with Victor’s mother before sitting down at the kitchen table. “Yes, I’m that trainer from television. My name is technically Gawain Surge-Gladius, but I usually just go by Surge. You can call me Uncle Sparks though.” As he said that, a ball on his belt shook slightly.

“Wait, Uncle?” Victor asked. “How can you be my uncle? I thought my mom was an only child?”

“So did I Victor, but when your grandpa’s will was finally executed, my baby brother here found out about us and flew here from Kanto to meet us.” Victor’s mom explained.

“Your mom’s right, Victor.” Uncle Sparks explained. “Your mother was left with our grandparents in order for our parents to go on a brief vacation to Kanto. While there, some crazy, freak accident occurred after dear old mom cheated on dad with Lt. Surge, my adopted father. Surge and dad were brothers-in-arms, so this nearly tore their friendship apart. However, once my twin sister and I were born, they reconciled in order to co-parent us both. My sister is Surge’s daughter while I am Gladius’s son.” At Victor and his mother’s faces, he continued. “I know, I know. It should be impossible, but the hospital claimed that Mew must have been in a playful mood or something for it to work.” He sighed. “Then dad died in a freak accident near the Kanto Power Plant. I was taken in by Surge who was my legal guardian in case of dad’s death. Ellie and I were raised together until she decided to travel the world like our older brother had before us. I eventually left as well, mainly because I didn’t want to take over the Vermillion Gym. I travelled throughout the regions with my team of Pokémon as I refined my skills. Blah, blah, blah, right?” He asked with a lopsided grin. “As much as I love talking about myself, I actually came here to ask if you wanted to begin training with me for the Galarian Gym Challenge, and before you ask, I already got your mom’s approval.” He said with a raised finger after Victor opened his mouth. “So, my favorite nephew, what do you say?” Uncle Sparks asked with a wide smile.
