Chapter Text
Tendou and you go way back. He applied for a sports scholarship to Shiratorizawa thanks to you. Your father was an alumnus there and wanted you to attend the same school. Therefore, you dragged Tendou there. When you both were accepted, you knew everything was gonna be alright. After all, Tendou was going to be by your side.
Glances were directed to both when you two walked the halls and campus of Shiratorizawa. For you, it was always the best opportunity to show off Tendou. He was the best and you wanted him to feel like it. You were proud to be walking side by side with him.
On the other hand, Tendou knew what you did. He found that endearing and funny at the same time. Looks that for others would make anyone feel self-conscious, made you puff out your chest, and walk like you owned the place.
Nobody could understand how such a sweet girl could live joint to the hip to Shiratorizawa’s guess monster.
Actually, for some people like Tendou’s volleyball team, it was funny how you two were always together to the point that most believed that there was something more than friendship.
Ushijima Wakatoshi wasn’t an exception. Even he got used to having you around, always at his and Tendou’s shared dorm and accompanying the team to their training camps.
Talking to you was an enjoyable activity for Ushijima. You were always so kind and volleyball was one of your favorite topics. He once doubted if it could be love? However, it wasn’t. You just were one of the few females he had contact with, if not the only one sometimes.
Tendou never says it, but you are his safe place, you are his person. Bringing peace to his clouded mind and always keeping up with his antics. Something that has been bugging him, was the fact that you will probably go to America and study as your parents did. Which means… This will be your last year together.
He tried asking, talking about college, the future in general, and your answer was always the same. “I don’t know yet” with a frowning face. Tendou had a strange feeling every time he heard you say those words, like when he was about to guess a block in the court and he ended up getting it right.
After Shiratorizawa lost to Karasuno, Ushijima felt a lot of tension in the air whenever Tendou or you walked by. Ushijima may seem dense but he wasn’t stupid, so he did what he thought was best for his closest friends. Force them to talk about the elephant in the room.
At first, Tendou played dumb. Avoiding the questions Ushijima threw his way to the point where Tendou even avoided you as well. Why? Well, Ushijima only asked when you were present and Tendou noticed it.
One day, Ushijima found you in his room crying. He was surprised, laugh and sometimes abnormal screaming were the only sounds he came to know from you in your last three years at Shiratorizawa together. Of course, Tendou was present in each and every memory he had of you so this scene was weird.
“Y/N-san? Are you feeling well?” Ushijima said as he stepped into the room and swiftly closed the door behind him. The concern could be seen in his olive eyes.
Your figure was hunched hugging your knees on his bed. Surprised by the sudden intrusion, you raised your head and cried even harder at seeing the tall volleyball player standing there.
“W-wakatoshi-kun I ne-need t-to speak with Satori-kun..” you couldn’t stop those awful forced intakes of air your sobbing self made.
Taking a seat on the chair in front of the bed, Ushijima understood that you wanted to know when Tendou would be coming back. “He went out with Semi and Yamagata, I don’t know when they’ll be back but you know you can stay here as long as you need” softly he rested his hand on your shoulder as a sign of support.
“Y/N would you like to talk about it?” he was offering an ear to your problems and you didn’t hesitate to take it.
You told Ushijima everything. About your parent’s wish to make you study overseas, and how you wanted to make them proud but an uncertain future scared you to the bone. When you said uncertain, it meant that you wouldn’t have the only constant thing in your life, Tendou. The cherry on top was that you will be off to New York in less than a month and even before your graduation day.
What neither of you knew was that Tendou heard everything. Standing behind the half-closed door of his dorm and with tears threatening to stain his cheeks. So that was it? No more together?
