Bouquet

Summary:

Surprised, Sasori looked it over once before turning the box and skimming the contents with a mild glare. After a few minutes he finally spoke. "You got me... a LEGO set? That's what took you so long?" He asked, voice monotone.

"Well you never like it when I get flowers, you always complain about how quickly they die and what a waste of money they are... so I thought this would be nicer?" Deidara responded, swallowing the anxiety bump in his throat. "You can even put it together! And they don't die, un!"

AU in which Deidara knows Sasori better than he knows himself.

Notes:

I have my own Bouquet collection with the extra flowers, and it really is a nice alternative to the real, dying ones.

i did a major content purge on all of my Sasodei related content across ao3 & tumblr, and as of now only my two one shots exist. hopefully i can re-fill that hole some day

***"no crazy" tags in my work indicate that the fic has no remotely explicit content and usually signifies major fluff.***

Work Text:

The apartment was quiet when Deidara returned home from class. Like any lazy twenty something, he dropped both his bag and keys on the end table closest to the door, kicking his shoes off and leaving them right on the mat. The only thing he kept on his person was a large rectangular box, cradled gently between two tan arms.

It was a gift- something he'd seen on his trek home and absolutely had to get. But not for himself.

Despite the silence and lack of lighting, the gentle clack of a keyboard in another room told him he wasn't home alone- Sasori must have chosen to work from home today.

Perfect!

He creaked open the office door, as to not scare his usually jumpy boyfriend. Sasori was just like a cat, and needed to be treated as such. No sneaking up on him, no sudden movements, avoid the claws, no loud noises, a protein rich diet of mainly chicken and turkey, etc.

Shuffling the black box in his arms, Deidara rapped his knuckles on the door gently, trying to summon the redheads attention.

"You're late," Sasori noted sternly, tawny eyes running across the spread sheet on his monitor. He turned to face the blond, eyeing both his wet form and the strange package in his arms with a demanding curiosity. "And... dripping all over the carpet I just cleaned."

"I-" Deidara paused, suddenly unsure of how to present his gift. Instead, he entered the room fully, thrusting the box into the others lap. "I got you something." He mumbled, looking away. "That's why I came home late."

Surprised, Sasori looked it over once before turning the box and reading the contents with a mild glare.

"A children's toy."

"It's for ages eighteen and up, not kids un! Don't you like this kind of stuff? Building and shit? You always go on about long lasting this and that, un." He didn't expect much of a reaction to begin with, but he also didn't expect such a negative one either.

"Oh so you just barely make the cut off," The other man snorted. "I'm an architect, who does actual work. I don't play with plastic toys. Now please, I need to get back to work." none too gently, he placed the box on the floor, leaving it on the side that showed the image of what the LEGO pieces would eventually turn into: a colorful bouquet of flowers. Daisies, pale roses, asters, tulips, and filler flowers to fill a vase of the builders choice.

Deidara thought it was a rather brilliant idea to compromise on the never ending arts debate, but based on the reaction he got, it couldn't have been further from the truth apparently.

The two stared at each-other for a moment more before Sasori huffed and turned back to his monitor- clearly whatever he was working on was more important his now upset boyfriend.

"So... you don't like it?"

"Correct."

"But It's-"

Sasori cut him off with a sharp and loud sigh. "I'm working now. You're bothering me."

The blond huffed, crossing his arms in annoyance. "Fine. I was just thinking of you! That's all!" He snapped, retreating through the entry. "I'll return it, or something. Just leave it on the fucking floor. Whatever, un." There was no room for Sasori to make any more smart quips, as the door to the bathroom across the hall slammed shut shortly after.

Sasori was kept up late that night, burdened by another surprise deadline and extra work assignments. It wasn't until nearly midnight when he saved his work and put the laptop on sleep mode. Sleepily he rubbed his eyes underneath his glasses. One of these days, work would be his undoing. Alas, the steady income kept a roof over their heads. Sasori was sure that left to his own devices, Deidara would most likely starve and die. Or blow himself up, whichever came first.

Speaking of which, his other half had long since gone to sleep, all without saying a single word more. He showered, ate, and did whatever else in silence until retiring to their bedroom, sleeping in a curled up ball facing the wall when the redhead checked on him. This was typical behavior after any kind of spat- Deidara was notoriously bratty and prone to give a cold shoulder when he didn't get something he wanted.

As Sasori came to a stand, his socked foot nudged something. Looking down, he realized that it was the gift Deidara tried giving to him earlier. Turning it over in his hands once more, he grimaced and wondered why Deidara even bothered getting it. The man had clearly gone out of his way, getting drenched in rain during the process, and taking almost over an hour to walk back home... a lot of effort for something so trivial.

All in the name of a silly children's plaything. Did that brat even know him at all, he scoffed inwardly, rattling the box a bit. 'Botanical Collection: Flower Bouquet' the top read, 'The perfect home addition for eternal beauty!' ...Eternal?

Deidara willingly spent money on something that held the polar opposite of his own demented opinion? It was probably the one thing he would never change his mind on, despite being factually incorrect of course. Sasori needed to see more now.

Curiosity -strictly curiosity- peaked, he opened the front side, interested to see how it actually looked. Seven hundred and fifty six colored plastic pieces, separated by six numbered bags contained the majority of the inside, while a paper building guide lay underneath it all.

Sasori sat back down at his desk with the box in his lap, pulled out the guide, and thumbed through the pages.

A small part of him began feeling like maybe, just maybe he overreacted a little bit.

When Deidara awoke the next morning, he hadn't expected to feel that familiar warmth cradling his backside.

If anything, he thought they'd spend the night apart again, sleeping on their respective sides; not being spooned from behind. The older man's hold was tight around his arms, face buried into the back of his neck as he snored into those long Rapunzel like strands. Turning over as much as he could, Deidara could see his exhausted yet content expression, those dark circles around the eyes, and wondered just what time he actually stopped working at. It was nearly nine in the morning, by now Sasori would be awake, working or badgering him to get up until he finally did.

He frowned, quietly peeled back the ironclad grip around him and slipped from the bed, maneuvering as to not wake up the sleeping redhead. He was still somewhat upset about yesterday, and no amount of cuddling would fix it. Yet, anyway.

After brushing both his hair and teeth, Deidara changed into his outfit for the day, and headed for the kitchen. Coffee first, then he'd figure out what to do next. As a petty punishment for being a dick, he would let Sasori sleep in until he naturally woke- which most likely wouldn't be until mid afternoon, something he positively hated.

However, when he stepped into the kitchen, the air in his lungs vanished. There, in the center of the dining table, sat the completed LEGO bouquet set. All ten flowers were assembled and arranged identical to the product photo on the box, and sat neatly inside a tall wooden vase. When did the man even...?

Unable to contain his excited giddiness, he turned back to the bedroom, darting in and climbing back into the bed and straddling his partners hips. This woke Sasori up easily enough, his alabaster fingers reaching up and loosely clutching at Deidara's narrow waist. He was still wearing his shirt from yesterday, although the top three buttons were undone. Like a sixth sense, even in a sleep deprived state, he seemed to already know what Deidara had practically jumped on him for. "It took me three hours to build," he muttered sleepily, eyes remaining closed. "You're welcome."

"So you liked it?" Deidara asked, leaning forward a little.

"I didn't say that." Sasori replied with a bored yawn, squinting up at him.

"You got a vase for it, un."

"..."

"Yes, Sasori?"

"Get off of me."

"So you liked my gift right, un? Why else would you stay up almost all night putting it together? Was it fun?" He poked a slim finger into his partner's cheek teasingly. The older man flushed, eyes popping open fully now. He lifted a hand to slap away the other's finger, and crossed his arms defiantly. "It was a tedious endeavor. I only did it for your sake; do you know how much of a hassle it would be to return it? Not to mention the wait to get your money back, finding the time, bus fare, walking, there was no where to put them, and then I had to find a spot with lighting-"

The blond leaned forward, cutting him off with a hard and passionate kiss on the mouth. Before Sasori could properly respond, Deidara pulled away with a wide grin. "It's really cute when you get embarrassed like that."

"Yeah, yeah," His partner rolled his eyes. He sat up slightly, shifting until he was leaning up on his elbows. His expression was lighter, as if the kiss lifted some kind of weight from his chest. "Now, you have two choices; stop terrorizing me so I can go back to sleep, or keep appreciating how much I do for you, silently, with that mouth of yours."

Two hours later, they were both dressed (or re-dressed) and decidedly having a late breakfast breakfast in the kitchen. The two ate across from each-other in silence, separated by a bouquet that wouldn't be going anywhere anytime soon.

Notes:

The box does not say eternal beauty, that's just some bullshit i made up. i'm a fraud
