Chapter 1: Soulmates

Chapter Text

“Iwa-chan, look I don’t know how to say this and I don’t want you to be uncomfortable with me.” Oikawa was an emotional wreck, tears brimming his brown eyes and his usual flirty demeanour nowhere to be seen. He was being serious for once, so serious that Iwa was terrified of what was about to happen. Did Oikawa fucking murder someone? Whatever his reasoning for being so nervous, Iwa like usual needed to coach him through it.

“Hey… Look you don’t need to talk about it if you aren’t ready yet… I’ll always be here for you and you know that ok?” Iwaizumi didn’t have the slightest clue of what Oikawa was going to say but it wasn’t going to come out if he didn’t comfort him. Hearing the trembling male sigh, Iwa looked up lovingly; trying to appear as friendly as possible for whatever his childhood best friend was going to say.

“Iwa, I like boys, like like-like them...” What? Why was he so nervous to say that? I’m fucking homosexual. “...and I may like you.” The tears that beautifully decorated Oikawa’s eyes moved down to the rest of his flushed face, the sound of him hyperventilating filled the area around them, getting lost with the distance.

Iwaizumi was shocked, to say the least, maybe even speechless but the sounds of Oikawa attempting to mutter apologies quickly brought him back to reality. Trying to grasp the situation Iwa pulled the poor boy into a hug, rubbing soothing circles into his back and muttering things like “Shhh it’s ok, don’t apologise”.

After a few minutes Oikawa’s rapid breathing started to relax and the tears stopped consistently flowing, he seemed to calm down enough to be able to comprehend and answer questions, “So… are you bisexual or?”

“Bisexual. Wait, maybe pan? Could be onmi too. Honestly, I don’t know.” Did he even hear my confession? Iwa hasn’t brought up that Oikawa likes him since he isn’t too sure about his feelings on the matter either, he wouldn’t shy away from calling his friend attractive and secretly he liked it when Oikawa would call him up excited over the dumbest things.

The boys; in their thoughts and entangled in each other’s arms, thoughts of panic and anxiety filled Oikawa's head with Iwa reminiscing over his memories with Oikawa trying to figure out if he returns the feelings. He doesn’t like me back… He’s disgusted, isn’t he? Both of their heart rates were rapidly increasing to the point where it was almost comforting.

Iwa was the first to break the silence, “I think I like you too, would you maybe want to go out on a date with me?” It was now Oikawa’s turn to be shocked, feelings of ecstasy filled his body, it was incomprehensible how he felt. Although the way he partially separated himself from Iwa to look him in the eyes confirmed it.

They’re soulmates and they know it.

The sunset in the background causes a gorgeous golden glow to be cast onto the boys, lighting up each others faces effortlessly. Iwa gently grabs Oikawa’s face, making sure to be careful of the fragile state he’s in. “I take it back I don’t think I like you...”, panic quickly spreads across Oikawa's face, the glow being more evident in his eyes. “...I know I like you”.

As fast as the anxiety came, it left. Oikawa looked like he was in heaven, lovingly staring into his best friend's eyes and most importantly having the comfort of knowing his feelings are reciprocated. If Oikawa had it his way they’d stay like this eternity, with how long he bottled up his feelings he couldn’t help but have his eyes flicker to Iwaizumi’s lips.

Iwaizumi was facing a similar problem, with how long he suppressed and denied his feelings for Oikawa he couldn’t help but look at the boy’s lips. The comforting sound of the wind surrounding them, “Tooru, did I ever tell you how beautiful you are?” The way Iwa spoke was so caring and gentle, every syllable spoken was drowning in pure adoration and that adoration was only for Tooru Oikawa.

Oikawa went into a frenzy, his stomach was filled with butterflies and his head was blank, words unable to be formed. His mouth opened; failing in an attempt to express his gratitude, to Iwa’s amusement he wasn’t even able to shut his mouth. Being the caring person that Iwaizumi Hajime is, he cautiously moved his right hand off Oikawa’s cheek to under his chin, gently closing his mouth.

Deciding to give in to the temptation, Iwaizumi slowly leaned in closer to the boy's face. Making sure to look up at Oikawa for a sign of approval to continue, as soon as the boy nodded Iwa gently placed his lips onto the man he would swear to never lose. Deciding to savour the moment, Hajime stayed still; flourishing in the comfort of being in an intimate position like this with Tooru.

Feeling the warmth of the sun disappearing, Iwaizumi slowly opens his eyes and gently pulls away. Street lights were starting to turn on and the moon was becoming more prominent with every passing second. Iwa furrowed his brows, he would look intimidating to the average person but all Oikawa saw was the gentle care he held in his eyes.

Reluctantly they had to bid each other farewell, as it was getting late and they still needed to head home. A bounce filled Oikawa's every step, his mind unable to distract himself from the thought of Hajime Iwaizumi. The boy he grew up with, the boy that witnessed Oikawa’s insecurities develop. The man that comforted him, the man that saw his face light up with joy.

The man that was destined for Tooru Oikawa; Hajime Iwaizumi.
