i like shiny things but i'd marry you with paper rings

Summary:

some grand proposals are in the middle of a flower-filled field, with the gorgeous sunset and wearing detailed outfits,

or some could also be in the middle of watching a cliche love story, being half-awake, while holding your lover close

Work Text:

It was late at night, preferably around midnight. Soft murmurs of the television playing in the background at their shared apartment.

The two lovers were in the bedroom, twisted in the bedsheets. Their legs were entangled around each other, small hands held by larger ones, as Will’s head rested on Mike’s shoulder.

They’ve been dating for many years now, however, it was only a year ago when they decided to make their relationship public. The stereotypical homophobia always frightened both of them, they just wanted to be safe, so they kept it a secret for years. It was years of stolen kisses in the dark, sneaky glances at one another, and taking any opportunity to touch each other.

For a long time, they enjoyed knowing that only they knew what they did in the dark, knowing that they were more than just friends. They enjoyed seeing how oblivious their friends could be, but of course the red-headed one caught on quicker than the others.

When they came out, all their friends were very supportive, Mike and Will couldn’t be happier.

So here they are, almost twenty-five years old, and were just peacefully watching some stupid romance movie that El’s new boyfriend recommended, Mike couldn’t remember the name of the movie.

Mike couldn’t even focus on what was going on in the movie. He was busy daydreaming while staring at his gorgeous boyfriend, though he could barely stay awake.

Will looked beautiful in the moonlight with the television lights flashing gently on his face. He always looked so delicately handsome, even right now with his hair all fluffy and ruffled.

Mike blinked, half-asleep already.

“Darling?”

Will hummed softly, not lifting up his head to look at Mike just yet, continuing to focus on the movie though he looked like he was about to fall asleep as well.

“Would you marry me?”

Will chuckled softly, it was a beautiful sight.

“Didn’t we have this conversation like.. two weeks ago?” Will responded, barely letting his full voice come out.

Mike sat up straight and grunted quietly while he reached for the drawer next to the bed. He opened the first drawer and took out a smooth, leathery crimson-red box, and looked back at Will.

“Mike? What is-” Will said, chuckling nervously. Mike smiled sleepily.

“Will you marry me?”

Mike opened the scarlet red container to reveal a magnificent-looking sapphire-colored diamond ring, with polished curves. Mike looked lovingly into his boyfriend, nerves starting to build up. He couldn’t imagine the world without Will, he couldn’t imagine being happy when all his happiest moments were shared with this perfect human being.

Will couldn’t help but feel salty tears appear on his face, there was a pause of realization until he smiled so purely and wide.

“Of course I will marry you, you dork.” Will barely whispered, sniffling.

Mike smiled the widest smile he ever wore in his entire life, and blinked sleepily while putting the ring softly on Will’s finger and hugged him tightly, laughing quietly.

“I love you so much, oh my god,” Mike said, kissing Will on the lips quickly before hugging him tight again. Will kept giggling through his tears.

“I love you too, so much,” Will responded quietly, holding onto Mike tight. Both of them could barely believe what was happening, they just got engaged!

Even though it wasn’t a grand proposal like in those cliche love stories, Will couldn’t be happier. He got engaged to his first ever friend, to his first kiss, to his first love.

Mike slowly pulled away from the hug but held onto his lover, wiping Will’s tears softly as Will relaxed into the touch of his fiance.

Fiance.

“That really just happened, didn’t it?” Mike asked, in disbelief. He could barely process the whole situation, it was as if his mind was in a deep sleep and his body just acted.

Will giggled in response, Mike couldn’t help but smile even wider (if that was even possible.)

“You’re such an idiot.” Will spoke softly, leaning in for a gentle kiss.

Their lips met with so much passion and intensity as they could while being half awake. Will hummed into the kiss, feeling butterflies and all that beautiful romance shit that he never really believed in before Mike.

“You’re so perfect, god, I wouldn’t wanna watch the world end with anyone else.” Mike spoke sleepily as Will rested his forehead against Mike’s, smiling softly, admiring the blissful moment.

“Me too, love, me too.” Will responded, making Mike giggle quietly and press another quick kiss.

“We should really go to sleep, you look exhausted.” Will stated, rubbing Mike’s cheek lightly. Mike nodded in agreement, though he didn’t want this moment to end.

Will got up and grabbed the remote, turning the television off, letting his fiance get comfortable in the sheets.

Mike opened his arms waiting for Will to come into bed with him. He never felt so free, it felt as though his spirit flew up into the blue skies and sat down on Cloud 9.

Will giggled and walked back to the bed, cuddling his lover as tight as possible, holding him close.

Mike hummed happily and pressed soft kisses on Will’s face.

Sure, it wasn’t like those incredible proposals on television, but it was perfect for Mike and Will. And that’s all that mattered.
