“Troy, c’mon.” Mike interjected. “Leave him alone, man.” Will clutched his sketchbook to his chest, making brief eye contact with Mike and sending him a small smile of thanks.
Troy glared up at him. “Dude.”
Mike raised an eyebrow. “Dude.” He shook his head. “He’s just a nerd. He’s not worth your time. And he's definitely not worth a detention.” Mike eyed the teacher.
Will knew Mike was just playing a part, but the mild insult still stung. He looked down. Mike was still friends with Troy. He was still part of the cronies. Of course he couldn’t be prince charming twenty-four-seven.
Troy sighed. “Fine.” He turned back to Will. “You got off lucky this time, but I promise you, I’ll figure out what’s in that little book of yours if it’s the last thing I do.” He hissed, mouth twisted into a frown, and turned away.
As Mike passed Will’s desk, he pressed a piece of folded paper discreetly against the wood, not making eye contact.
Will unfolded the piece of notebook paper.
