Summary:

If you want Makoto’s opinion, kissing your male best friend isn’t gay if you’re training for a girl.

Work Text:

Makoto couldn’t quite calm himself down. He felt anxiety all over his body. He also felt really embarrassed because his lack of confidence was so bad he actually was worrying about a problem like THIS.

Here’s the thing: Makoto has never kissed anyone in his whole life. No girls, boys nor anything in between. He had a few crushes before, but didn’t know how to act on them.

This never actually worried Naegi. In fact, this is the first time he actually acknowledged he has never kissed anyone. Even though it sucked seeing all his friends with cute girlfriends, it wasn’t something that bothered him enough.

That was before Sayaka asked him on a date.

Sayaka Maizono. Also known as the idol of the moment, the new j-pop icon, probably the most famous Japanese singer in her generation. She was a big deal.

She wanted to go on a date with Makoto? The most-average-and-common-and-boring guy to ever exist?

(Go gain some confidence.)

He doesn’t even remembering saying yes to her question. Naegi was way too surprised and way too happy to think rationally.

But then it hit him. Sayaka is a popular girl. There’s no way she has never kissed anyone in her life. A pretty, nice and talented woman without a partner? Only if she doesn’t want one.

He could ask for one of his friends to train with him. But who? His list of friends isn’t a really big one.

Kyoko? Nah. She’s pretty, and she’s cool. But she’s also dating Celestia. It would be wrong.

Asahina? Single and a really nice girl. And a lesbian. No way, imagine how uncomfortable would be for her to kiss a man?

Then the lucky boy moved to the last person of his mental list.

Byakuya?

Oh my god.

I mean, was Byakuya attractive? Hell yeah. Was he intelligent? A LOT. If he wasn’t all cocky and grumpy all the time, he would be the perfect man to ever exist.

When Naegi thought about the blond boy, he reminded himself that he’s the only one who could break that ice barrier Togami made around him. He felt a bit special thinking about it.

Togami was the kind of man he would date. He’s pretty, clever and dedicated. Pure perfection.

“Jeez, what am I thinking about? He’s just my friend!” Naegi thought

When Makoto finally came back to the topic “kiss training”, Byakuya was still his only choice.

But what if Togami gets uncomfortable? The fact that he likes men does not mean he’ll jump to the first man that wants a kiss from him. What if Naegi ruins his friendship?

Oh, he didn’t want to be without Byakuya. Not after finally getting to know his bright side. He struggled to be his friend, y’know?

Even so, he was still thinking about the feeling of kissing him. Would Togami like it? Or he would hate every second of it?

Well, thinking logically, even if things end up awkward, Byakuya isn’t the kind of person to easily give up things. So he would probably just ignore the tension until they’re normal friends again.

Look, if you want Makoto’s opinion, kissing your male best friend isn’t gay if you’re training for a girl.

To hell with it. He has nothing to lose.

With a moment of sudden confidence, he got up his bed and went to Togami’s room. He had been there sometimes for studying. It was way cleaner and had more thing that his dorm. For a school dormitory, it was really comfy.

He knocked and waited for the taller man to open the door for him.

— Why does everyone keeps knocking my door when there’s literally a bell- — He looked at Makoto. — Oh. Hello, Naegi. — He calmed himself down. — What’s the matter? You don’t usually come to my room unless you need help with
studying.

— Hey, Togami-kun! Uh... can I come in first?

— Ah, sure. — He stepped back so the lucky student could enter. — Sorry.

— No problems. — He smiled and entered the room. The heir closed the door and stayed near it.

— So... um... I have a favor to ask to you.

— A favor? — He crossed his arms. — And what would it be?

— Well... — Makoto looked down to his feet. — First of all, I just want you to know that you’re free to refuse it. I’m not forcing you to do anything you aren’t comfortable with and-

— Makoto. — Oh my, he never calls Makoto by his first name. — You don’t need to give me all this speech. If you came here it’s because you know me well enough to know my boundaries. Unless it’s something related to Toko. In that case, my answer is no.

— No! It’s nothing like that! — He crossed his arms as well. — Look, here’s the thing-

Then he hesitated.

Could he do it? What if he didn’t actually know Togami’s boundaries enough?

He already started the sentence... so here goes nothing.

— Can you help me practice kissing for a date?

Byakuya’s face went from a neutral expression to a really, really shocked one.

— What?

— I knew I shouldn’t have asked you this. — He cringed. — Just forget about it-

— No. Explain me what is this.

So he didn’t even know what was that? Does he live under a rock or something?

— Alright... it’s when to friends basically try to get better at kissing by... kissing each other?

— I see. — He slightly blushed. — I only have two questions about this... thing.

The lucky student looked a bit confused.

— Ask them.

— First, why do you suddenly want to learn how to kiss and two, why did you chose me? I don’t think I’d like to waste my first kiss with a friend.

The first one was a easy one. The second one should have been easy too.

“Oh, you see. Kyoko and Hina weren’t available options, but you were, so I went for you.”

No, that wasn’t right.

If Kyoko and Hina were options... he would... have chosen Byakuya anyway? Or no?

Was he even into guys to begin with? Naegi never thought about it.

— Naegi? Hello?

— Oh, sorry! Well, first: it’s for a date with Sayaka, I’m afraid I might disappoint her. And the second one...

Just tell him the truth.

— To be honest, I chose you because you are my most trusted friend. Even if Kyoko and Hina were options, they wouldn’t be the chosen ones. You’re my best friend, Togami.

The heir almost smiled.

— You’re my... best friend too. — He said.

Then the room went quiet.

Did Byakuya already forgot the question? Or was he just trying to make a decision?

Makoto was nervous. Really nervous.

— Fine. — The blonde said. — I’ll help you.

— Really!? — The shorter boy almost screamed. — Thank you, Togami!

— You’re welcome. I want to become a good friend, I thought this might help.

Naegi laughed to himself.

— What’s so funny?

— Nothing. I’m just thinking about how much changed. — He smiled. — In the beginning of the year, you wouldn’t even let me get near you, but now... You’re already a good friend, Byakuya.

Byakuya avoided Makoto’s happy gaze to him.

— Shush. — He put one of his hands in front of his face. — Just don't mention it, never.

— Alright, alright... so... can I do it?

The heir looked at the lucky student again. His eyes locked on his embarrassed face. It was cute, honestly.

— Go ahead.

— Okay... here we go..

Naegi went closer to the taller boy. He got on tip toes to reach his face. He hugged his neck and after that...

Their lips were finally together.

Oh god, so that was kissing? Makoto finally understood why people enjoyed doing that so much.

Byakuya was also in heaven. He would never admit it in a loud voice tho.

They stayed like that for god knows how much time.

— ...So?

— Well, I’m not an expert in kissing but the kiss was indeed really good.

— Really?

— Yes.

— Great.

Naegi remained silence.

So Byakuya enjoyed it. And now? It was good for him as well, he could probably gain some confidence before his date and do even better.

If that’s the case, why does he want to kiss his friend again?

He shouldn’t kiss him again, the shorter boy knew the path he was choosing if he did it.

But then again, it was really tempting. It didn’t feel like friends helping each other.

It felt more like boyfriends sharing a kiss.

He should do it again. Whatever happened, he would tell Sayaka later.

— You know, trains are made of more than one attempt. Do you... want to do it again?

He didn’t even answer, they just kept kissing. And kissing, and kissing. Until they ended up on the bed. It wasn’t anything rushed nor rough. Just gentle kisses, you could feel the love that came with them. Oh, Naegi was well aware of the choice he made. Their lips kept connected, they would still be until one of them wanted to stop.

— One more time. — Makoto said, again.

They didn’t want to stop.

The lucky boy knew he had a lot of things to explain to Sayaka, but for now, he’s just enjoying the moment. God, why did he stay away from Byakuya all this time?

— I like you so, so much. — Makoto said between one of the pauses.

Wait, did he say that out loud?

— You what? — Togami stoped the kisses just to process what he heard. — I thought you liked Sayaka?

— Was that my outside voice? — He said and the heir almost laughed. — Great, now I ruined the mood, way to go.

— If you want my opinion, you made it better. — He kissed Naegi’s cheek. — I like you too. I thought it was... pretty obvious.

— I mean, if you ask Kyoko, she will probably tell you it was. But I had no clue! — He laughed. — Since when?

— Since we started reading together in the library, I believe.

Makoto rolled his eyes.

— You mean since I started to hang out with you and you kept making the conscious choice to ignore me?

— That’s your point of view. — He laughed.

Togami’s laugh was really pretty.

— What about you?

— Me? I just found out about it. But it was probably when we started studying

— You found out you liked me because of kisses?

— Yeah. — Makoto awkwardly smiled. — Don’t get me wrong, Sayaka is a really nice girl, but I feel like I only accepted to go on a date with her because I wanted a partner. Then I kissed you and- — Kiss. — I’m- — Another kiss. — addicted.

Byakuya just accepted the loving kisses and started doing the same.

— So, what now? — Naegi asked.

— Let’s go on a date. I want to see where this is going to take us. — He grabbed the shorter boy’s hands. — I really want you to be sure this is were you want to be, dearest.

— I wouldn’t trade this place for any other in the world.

They kept chatting for the rest of the night, some random subjects between sweet kisses.

Makoto had to say a lot of things to the pop sensation the next day. Luckily for him, she wasn’t mad. Sayaka wanted makoto to be happy and supported him.

Besides, she would be lying if she told him the black haired soldier in Hope’s Peak didn’t catch her eyes.
