Work Text:

"Isn't it beautiful tonight?"

It was a rather unexpected question. The festival was certainly a sight to be walking through, the vendors attracting crowds to their foods, their games, their trades and just anything that would have people coming to them. Scents of warm sake, tempura fried shrimp, mochi, corn and other delicacies were certainly overbearing so those were not so good. Then there was the many games; scooping up fish, tossing rings, shooting fake guns at the targets and others that children gathered at hoping to win a prize.

Lastly those selling goods like pottery, origami, glassworks, jewelry and other such things that perhaps his companion would find lovely.

When he tried to find the source of her question he turned to look at her for help in what it was she was talking about. After all he didn't want to answer the wrong thing especially since this is the first time they had been alone together that was outside their estates.

She stood there with her lovely green eyes looking up at the full moon overhead. Her pink to green hair was pinned up in a bun rather than her usual three braids as she wore a lovely pink kimono with cherry blossoms on it. There was an almost mystified flow to her eyes when he realizes the moon was reflecting from them as she gazed at it.

He followed her look and hummed at the pale orb that provided the softest light he had ever seen in his life.

In all honesty, Obanai didn't really want to come here tonight. He was not a man of crowds and the idea of running into people made him quite uneasy as Kaburamaru was only peaking out from a gape in his uniform. Unlike Mitsuri he opted to wear his slayer uniform with the same black and white stripped haori. Though he did tie his hair back a bit to look a bit more casual for her.

The only reason he was here was because she had asked him to be there with her. She was so thrilled she practically burst with energy when she met him at the entrance to here. In all his life this woman was the only one he just couldn't refuse no matter what situation they get into together. How could he not when she was always so sweet to him despite his surliness and aloof demeanor? Plus she gave him and excuse to cook big meals since she usually ate enough to feed an entire village.

Yet again he couldn't bring himself to be annoyed no matter what.

Maybe it was how the moon looked reflecting from her eyes and how it bathed her in it's cool glow but he found his eyes now going to her and her alone.

"...Indeed. A most beautiful sight."

She blinked before she looked at him...then giggled softly as she covers her lovely red lips behind her sleeve.

"Aw Obanai-san you're such a charmer..." she lightly patted his shoulder-though it felt like a sharp smack considering how he almost stumbled back-before she smiles at him in a way that made his heart skip a beat, "Perhaps you looked at the moon a bit too long."

Ah yes...here comes the blush. He cleared his throat, relieved that his mask hid the warmth in his cheeks before he noticed her give a shiver.

"Mitsuri?" He tilted his head when he sees her hug herself a bit and a chill filled the air, "What's wrong? You're trembling..."

She blinked before she smiles and tried to laugh it off, "Oh this? Oh no I'm okay! I guess it got a little chilly now huh? I forgot to bring a haori my mother gave me so I suppose I wasn't very prepared."

He wasn't sure what came over him in that moment. For some reason he just found himself taking off his own haori and reached up to gently wrap it around her shoulder while making sure it was straightened out and fit her shoulders. She seemed rather surprised that he did that, blinking at Obanai as she had never expected him to do that for her. It was a little surreal.

However after a moment she smiles as she pulls it a little more around her.

"...Th-this uniform helps me keep warm so...you can use my haori and return it when you can..." he scratched the back of his head as he averted his gaze.

Kaburamaru hisses quietly and slowly poked his head from under the collar of the uniform. He then hissed softly and looked up at his friend while flickering his tongue under Obanai's chin. It's almost like the serpent was teasing him for getting flustered over giving her the haori.

Gently, Mitsuri took Obanai's arm, "Thank you, Obanai-san. I truly do appreciate this..."

If it were possible, Obanai swore he died and went to heaven right then. To have her leaning on him like this, holding his arm and treating him so sweetly...

It makes his heart twinge. How could she be so affectionate with someone like him? A man like him shouldn't even be here if his mother, aunts and cousins had any say before their deaths. Such horrible people...such a horrible bloodline...

"...You know, Obanai-san, the moon makes me think of you," she doesn't look at him softly, "...You always seemed to know how to light the way in the darkest of moments for me..."

He feels the blush spread up his cheeks to his ears before he looks down at her slowly...then with a smile behind his mask he gently rubes her arm hooked around his. No matter how inhumanely strong she was, she somehow was delicate in other ways. Ways that Obanai wished he could make disappear; that self doubt, the self hatred...she was a person who deserved all the good things even if it meant he would one day no longer be in the picture.

Even though you deserve better...I hope I can continue to be that light for you, Mitsuri.
