Chapter 1: Everything is Perfectly Perfect

Chapter Text

Nicole and Waverly talked about having kids…a lot. They talked and talked and talked some more and time passed and passed and passed some more. No one seemed to be in a hurry since things were so damn perfect. Wynonna, Doc and Alice were visiting more and more often and Nicole and Waverly were well on their way to earning their “best Aunts ever” badges. Nicole was back to her winning ways as Sheriff of Purgatory and Waverly was lighting it up at BBD as a research analyst. Even Rachel seemed happy, away for her first year at University and still dating Billy.

So it surprised Waverly (and Nicole too) when Nicole awoke one morning with a new found resolve. She sat Waverly down at the breakfast table to tell her it was time to start the baby making process. They had long ago decided that they wanted to take turns carrying their babies (God willing) and since Nicole was older she would go first. It all made perfect sense.

Two weeks later they arrived home with all the fixings for attempt number one at making an Earp/Haught baby. It was a night full of love, sex, laughter (no one was completely sure how to go about it and research only gets you so far) and maybe a tear or two.

Nothing goes according to plan and nothing is ever easy except, it turns out, Nicole and Waverly’s first attempt at pregnancy. When the first test came up positive they shook their heads in disbelief. When the second test came up positive they laughed in disbelief. When the third and final test came up positive they held each other and cried tears in disbelief and absolute joy. It just seemed too damn easy. When they face timed Wynonna to tell her the news she jokingly exclaimed, “Damn babygirl, you got her on the first try” while holding up a finger gun and pretending to blow on the tip of the barrel.

From then on time flew. Even Nicole had to admit things were going much better than she ever imagined. She had some morning sickness but it only lasted a week maybe two and was no where near as bad as she thought it would be. All the tests came back fine, all the ultrasounds were normal with a perfect little heartbeat and at 20 weeks the ultrasound revealed that they were having a boy.

For years the subject of their last names went unaddressed. Neither one really feeling any urgency to change their name or to pick a name to assign to their new family. Both of them had plenty of reason to NOT want their surname to carry on.

Nicole’s relationship with her family was complicated at best leaving her with very little attachment to her family name. Not to mention the pain in the ass of dealing with the reactions every time she introduced herself. “Did you say your name is Hot?” “Uhhh, no, its Haught…H-A-U-G-H-T.” Add to it all the fact that Aunt Wynonna would no doubt continue her tradition of unabashedly teasing them all until the end of time.

Waverly for her part had spent most of her life trying to pull herself out from under the weight of the name Earp. Who would choose to start their family under a name known for gun fights and curses and a whole lot of crazy? Let’s not forget that she technically wasn’t even REALLY an Earp. When Waverly thought of love and family she thought of Nicole.

Nicole was surprised when she woke up, now well into her second trimester to find one Waverly Earp gazing down at her. Waverly smiled a smile that imparted warmth and happiness and so much love that Nicole actually almost felt like she may cry. “Which wouldn’t be special these days…thanks hormones.” She thought.

“Wow,” Nicole said. “ What’s up with you Miss Sunshine?”

“I want to come with you to the station today.”

“Yeah? Ok. Something up?”

“Yes actually, I want to fill out the paperwork to change my name. I would very much like to be Mrs. Waverly Haught.”

“Wait, what? Why?”

“I just…I want us to have a family name. For our children to have the same name. I’m so in love with you and I’m so proud of you for carrying our baby. I want to take your name. Is that ok?”

“Yeah!” Nicole beamed. “Yeah of course, I’m…I’m honored…Mrs. Haught.”

“Well thank you Mrs. Haught.” Waverly replied once again sporting a smile that threatened to melt Nicole’s poor little hormonal heart.

Once they made it to the station Nicole went straight to her office and Waverly made the rounds saying hello and charming everyone she came into contact with. Nicole watched in awe from her desk.

“Mrs. Haught.” She thought…”if ever a a name fit.”

They celebrated all the milestones of pregnancy and enjoyed all the things that go into preparing for their family to grow by one. They prepared the nursery sticking with gender neutral colors. It was important to them that their child would always know he could play with any toy he wanted and like any color he liked and someday love whomever he loved. He would always be their son until he told them otherwise and that would be fine too.

Chrissy Nedley had returned to Purgatory the year before with her husband and daughter and she and Waverly quickly picked up right where they left off in their friendship so it was Chrissy who threw them a baby shower. They were both thankful to her for sparing them what would have been a whiskey soaked debacle had Wynonna thrown it.

They were “Nesting” in full force, making improvements and taking safety measures within the Homestead. They hired a Lawyer and began tying up loose ends with legal documents such as Wills and POA’s.

The weeks turned into months and the months flew by.

On September 8th Gus Haught was born into the world. Labor was relatively short for a first time Mom. Waverly announced to the room through her tears that a healthy beautiful baby and a healthy beautiful wife were the best birthday gifts she ever received.
