The Past Is Dead.

Summary:

Tommy decides to meet with Wilbur at the Burger Van to discuss something, but in the middle of the conversation, the prison sirens blare. The two of them have very different reactions, and Wilbur gets a bit carried away.

Notes:

HI HELLO this is partly inspired by the song the past is dead by beartooth, i feel like it accurately describes tommy's relationship with his past and how no matter what he tries he can't seem to escape it.
also this is inspired by various people's headcanons on twitter, i kinda mushed them all into one

anywayssss enjoy :)

Work Text:

Wilbur had asked Tommy to meet him at the Burger Van. He had a few things to discuss, hoping Tommy would be interested in the plans he had to offer.

“Hello?” Tommy quietly approached the van in the woods.

“Tommy! So nice to see you,” Wilbur approached Tommy quickly and hugged him. Tommy didn’t want to accept it but decided to not be rude, so he pulled his arms up slightly around his previous brother figure.

“So why did you call me out here?”

“Well, I have a proposition for you.”

“Wilbur, I already told you, I don’t want any part of this. You have fun flipping burgers and becoming a better person or whatever, but I don’t want to join you.”

“What can I do to get you to reconsider?” Wilbur pleads.

“Nothing.”

“...Alright, I’ll accept the defeat. I just thought it would be fun for you since Ranboo joined me. I know you two are fairly close.”

“Ranboo joined?”

“Yes, some time ago, actually. Did you not know?”

“No, honestly,” Tommy admits.

“Oh, well, now you know. Anyway, since you’re here, can I get you a burger?”

“It’s not poisoned or some shit, right?”

“Of course not,” Wilbur assures, “Let me get you one!” Wilbur excitedly enters the van, and Tommy can almost hear the burger sizzling on the grill from outside the van. He brings it out with him shortly to present to Tommy.

Wilbur hands it to him, “Here you are, good sir.”

“...Thanks,” Tommy unwraps it, inspecting it carefully before taking a bite, “Wow, this is really good!” Tommy expresses with his mouth full.

“You really like it?”

“Yeah, how’d you learn how to cook like this? It’s amazing!”

“Thank you, me and Ranboo have been working really hard to make this place worthwhile.”

Tommy finishes the last of his burger and laughs, ”I can tell, I’d eat a thousand of them if I could!”

Wilbur would deny it, but he couldn’t help the small flare of pride he felt in his chest at the sound of Tommy’s laughter. Even from growing up too fast, his laugh still sounds joyous like he was a little kid again.

The tender moment wouldn’t last.

The two of them were interrupted by a blaring siren heard across the entire smp. The noise went on and on and on, and neither of them spoke, until Wilbur was cast out with joy and a large smile.

“Do you hear that Tommy? ...Dream’s free! My hero is free! Oh, I can’t believe this!” Wilbur excitedly yells.

Tommy is silent.

“Tommy, this is great news, don’t you see? ...Tommy?”

Tommy was horrified. It showed on his face he was thinking about a million thoughts at once. A blank expression but an overwhelming sense of fear in his eyes.

“What?” Wilbur is confused as to why Tommy would suddenly be acting so strange.

“He’s- Dream. He’s free. ” Tommy says as if he’d heard a dirty secret for the first time.

The siren’s sound is the only thing disturbing a threateningly tense silence.

“What, you’re not- you’re not scared are you?” Wilbur taunts.

“Terrified,” Is the only word Tommy can shakily muster.

“Why would he hurt you, he brought you back to life! He brought me back to life, don’t you see? This is a good thing!”

“No it’s not, Wilbur! He’s going to fucking kill me!” Tommy screams, a single tear escaping down his cheek.

“Calm down, jeez. Well, how else can I convince you? You were always so stubborn-”

“Wilbur! Shut up! Shut the fuck up, okay? Dream killed me, and he was smiling while he did it! He tortured me! So no, you can’t convince me this is a good thing, because it’s not! I’m the first person he’s going to come for, and who knows what he’ll do to me and everyone I care about! Wait- Tubbo, Ranboo- Micheal and Shroud. I need to go home!” Tommy tried to run off but Wilbur caught his arm before he could get away.

“Maybe if I prove to you he’s good with your own eyes, you’ll believe me. C’mon, let’s go see him!” Wilbur tries to pull Tommy’s arm with him. Tommy resists with a cold will.

“NO.”

“Fine, we’ll just take a quick trip,” Wilbur picks up Tommy and throws him over his shoulder, walking towards the prison. Tommy flails and screams, fighting to get away, but Wilbur won’t budge. He kicks and fights but nothing works.

“Help! Help! Somebody please help me! Don’t take me to him!” Tommy cries out, face full of tears with bright red cheeks.

“Stop overreacting Tommy, you’re such a baby sometimes.” Wilbur belittles him. Tommy refuses to give up. He continues fighting and screaming out for help. The sound of the wailing sirens gets louder and louder as Wilbur walks, until the prison is within view.

“Look, we’re here!” Wilbur enthusiastically shouts over Tommy’s panic attack.

The life drains out of Tommy at the sight. He screams louder. Why won’t anyone save him?

“I don’t want to die! I don’t want to die!” Tommy quickly spirals in his panic.

Wilbur bitterly responds, “The past is dead Tommy, just move on!”

Tommy grows weary, giving up hope. With his efforts of escaping paired with being hung over Wilbur’s back upside down, everything was growing to be a blur. Until it went dark. Tommy had a split second of regret, not knowing if whether he wanted to wake up or not.
