Work Text:
Running a business was hard.
Yes, it was a well known fact, teachers even taught it to the children at school, but you really couldn’t understand the true meaning until you actually runned a business by yourself.
You have many responsibilities as a CEO, you not only have to make sure that everyone gets there payment in time, as a chief executive officer you are in charge of making the hard-level strategy decisions, you got to manage the overall operations and resources of the company and at the same time you act as the main point of communication between the board of directors and the corporate operations.
Your daily work is 72 percent of important meetings that could change the company’s future, and if something goes wrong the blame lies on you.
If it is a bigger company it gets hundreds of times worse.
You got something to live up to, you have been given a big responsibility and you can’t ever let it go wrong. The disappointment would be too hard to deal with, the loneliness and the hatred, you would blame yourself and nobody would tell you otherwise.
The pressure was hard, even for Kuroo who had been working with it for a couple of years. He had heard of people who prioritized their company over anything else, even leaving their family behind.
But Kuroo also learned that the reason for that was because they didn’t know how to plan things thinking of the long run, of the future, they gave and took without thinking of anything else.
Kuroo Tetsuro couldn’t afford that, from the start he tried to make a balance, it was working, maybe a little but it was working at least.
He had enough time to spend with his son and daughter.
“You look stressed out, Kuroo, or maybe in a rush?”
The black haired looked up, his attention switching from the computer to the man in front of him.
Daishou looked at him with a taunting smirk, and it only made Kuroo sight. He had already gotten used to Suguru’s personality, they are long time friends and business partners now, but there was still something that made him want to strangle that snake.
“Do you need to go somewhere?” He asked, voice mocking and eyes reflecting something that Kuroo already knew, things that Daishou meant behind the normal question.
“If you think I’m going on a date, you are very wrong, ‘Shou” The snake-like man nodded, smile growing even wider and a small giggle escaping his lips.
Suguru had a thing for set ups, blind dates or even some other blinded things, and for some reason he wanted to get Kuroo in it too. Sometimes it would be by trying to secretly set him up with a girl, or casually getting one of the accountants to get him some sweets.
He had no plans to stop and Kuroo was already tired of telling him to.
“So? What are your plans then?” The smirk was still there, and he even took his time to cross his legs, the word “mocking” resonating in Kuroo’s mind.
“My sister went on vacation to Hawaii with Fumiko and the kids,” Suguru nodded and crossed his arms. He knew Kuroo’s older sister, she would have been the new CEO after their father retired if it weren’t because he declined the offer. Takiyo was a lovely and strong woman, and her wife was a very gentle angel to hang out with, and he had heard about those vacation’s before, when the couple's kids visited Kuroo.
“Well? What does that have to do with you?”
“Be a little more patient” Kuroo said, making the other man growl “She is the one who usually pick up my kids from kindergarten, and now that she is gone I gotta do it”
Daishou understood. Because of her job Takiyo was able to pick Tetsurou’s children up from their kindergarten in time, and her own kids' school was right across the street. She would keep them at her house until Kuroo went to pick them up and take them home.
Kuroo’s job hours ended usually late, sometimes it would even be dark outside when he got to his sister's house. He was sometimes able to leave his son and daughter at the kindergarten in the morning, but it was unusual for him to pick them up.
Suguru could see that it affected him, after all he was a father that couldn’t see his kids for the majority of the day, there were even some weekends that Kuroo had to work.
Tetsurou could say that he had tried to balance it out, but he could never say that it completely worked. If it had worked he would be able to wake his children up during the morning, prepare breakfast for them everyday and help them get ready for kindergarten.
He would be able to pick them up and treat them with some ice cream in the park before going grocery shopping with them, searching for everything that they would need for dinner. Kuroo would be able to cook for them, eat dinner with them and watch some movies or play with them before preparing them for bed, with goodnight stories and goodnight kisses.
He wouldn't be away during weekends, we wouldn’t miss the small shows that his son and daughter would sometimes prepare, he would take them to swim classes, he would actually be there for them.
Sometimes Tetsuro regretted his decision, sometimes he wished that he never took over the company, he wanted to spend more time with his children. But at the same time he wanted to give them the best, make sure that they never miss anything.
Kuroo had conflicted feelings.
“At what hour do you need to go?” Suguru interrupted his train of thought, and almost automatically did Kuroo check the clock.
“In about five minutes” He responded, there were times that he completely forgot about the closing times of the kindergarten, but his sister had managed to take a photo of the schedule and send it to him “Could you please call Inuoka and make sure that the factory has confirmed our order?”
“No problem” After nodding, Kuroo made sure to turn the computer off, putting all the papers and documents on it’s right place so that he could have it organized for tomorrow. Suguru decided to stand up to follow Tetsuro out, making sure to take his jacket from the office chair “Good luck buddy”
“Hopefully I know my kids enough, call me if you need anything”
The moment he got out of the building, it didn’t take long before a bunch of cameras started to point at him, reporters trying to get an opportunity to talk with him.
He didn’t give them much attention, but with a straight posture he walked towards the black luxury car that was waiting for him, his bodyguard opening the door for him so that he could take off right away.
The ride was calm as always, his chofer was a pretty silent guy and Hirugami knew when his boss wanted to skip small talk, Kuroo sometimes preferred it that way, a total difference from when Lev or Yaku decided to travel with him.
He decided to look out of the window when they got near his kids' kindergarten, to distract himself a little from the phone.
It was a bright day, sun rays that burned your skin, and Kuroo wished that he had changed before going out of his office, the warmth was killing him and the black suit he was wearing wasn’t helping.
The streets were full, people getting out of their job to head home, some going grocery shopping or heading to the alcohol shop nearby. There was a park only a few meters ahead and Kuroo could see children playing there and dogs interacting with each other. It was a good sight, something that he wasn’t able to do so often.
Tetsuro wished that he would be able to do it someday though, when he was a child his mother used to go out with him and his older sister a lot, and they had a great time. He wanted that for his own kids, but it was hard to even get the time to pick them up from kindergarten.
His twins had a lot of energie, Tetsuro knew that they would love to be out in the forest just going around for one or two hours straight until they found a lake. During summer they could search for berries, or go camping for a whole weekend.
Someday, maybe.
“Sir, we are here”
Tetsuro thanked him and waited for his personal guard to open the door for him to leave. Truth be told, having a guard had never seemed necessary, but many people had told him that it could help him with at least one thing. Until now he had helped him escape from the paparazzi, but he recognized that there were quite crazy people in the world and having a guard could guarantee his and his kids safety, and Hirugami was a nice person and they could talk without having any problems. The twins did also get along pretty well with him, so there was no need of getting rid of him.
“Let’s go”
Being already outside, he could appreciate how the kindergarten looked this time of the year. It was quite large with many windows. The walls were white and the ceiling was made of wood. Looking at the windows, he noticed that there were some things stuck to them, paper flowers, letters that made up the name of the kindergarten and something else. On the walls there were different things painted with chalk of different colors and in the yard laid one or another toy. He could hear children's voices and laughter so he assumed they were in the backyard playing. Not knowing the kindergarten that well, Tetsuro decided to open the entrance and enter. The first thing he saw when he entered was the small shelves where the children probably had their things, each box had the name of a different child and when he approached and looked for the name of his kids he found nothing but two simple stuffed animals. He sighed and decided to go further inside the local area.
The place was quite cozy, the atmosphere was calm and the decoration of the place was perfectly suitable for children. After entering, he decided to follow the voices and look for an exit to the backyard. The interior did not have as many rooms and the largest one was connected to the others so it did not have to be difficult to find a door that led you outside.
In between searching he found a large round table, where there were several papers with drawings on them. Each drawing bears the name of the artist who painted it and with a bit of curiosity he looked up the names “Shinobu” and “Keiko”.
He found one under other drawings, grabbed the paper and appreciated what had been drawn with crayons on it. There were a total of six people drawn, three small and two tall, there were things written next to each person and Tetsuro assumed that it was their names. Being made of two four year olds it was a bit difficult to see what was in the drawing, but Tetsuro could try and figure it out.
He saw a figure that looked like his son, drawn next to him a little girl with black hair. There was another child with orange hair with the name of "Takara '' written next to him and something that looked like a brown ball with the name “Noboru” next to it. Then a tall figure with gray or white hair appeared. It was a bit confusing, there were some badly made stars around him and an arrow that indicated the name "Suga".
The last figure was tall, with blonde hair and black glasses, their name was on top of the figure and there were hearts at their sides, “Tsukki”, Tetsuro read.
He put the drawing back on the table and turned around. He had been too distracted and should go find his kids now, they needed to get to his home and so Tetsuro could call Suguru and hear what he was up to back in the company.. He managed to locate what seemed to be the door to go out to the backyard, the exit looked like the entrance, it had a shelf to leave the children's things, some hangers and also a large dryer, it was working so he supposed that some of the small ones had wet their clothes or something.
Tetsuro walked until he reached the shelves, but he did not realize that someone was there and when he turned around he collided with someone. Various things were heard falling to the floor, small and large, and Kuroo felt something wet his clothes.
"I'm sorry, I should have been more careful." He looked at the person he had collided with and felt his body freeze when their golden gaze met his.
He was looking at Tetsuro in frustration, his frown indicating it as did the snort Kuroo heard coming from him. He looked at Tetsuro at the same time he accommodated his black glasses and Kuroo saw how he put some strands of his blonde hair behind his ear. Tetsuro recognized him, he was one of the people that Shinobu and Keiko had drawn “Tsukki”
"And you are?" The blonde bent down as he asked him, arranging the wooden box to be able to leave the paint supplies in it and the smaller box where a few seconds ago there were plastic cups with water of different colors. Tetsuro also bent down to help him, grabbing the bigger box, “Tsukki” just sighed and stood up.
“Kuroo Tetsuro” He introduced himself “I’m Shinobu’s and Keiko’s father and I’m here to pick them up” The blonde looked at him a little surprised and left the box he was holding on a small table next to the shelves, the older one imitated his action and looked at him again “You should be Tsukki, I saw you in one of my kids drawings”
“Tsukishima Kei, I’m one of their teachers” His voice was soft, but Kuroo could still hear the little questioning tone “I’ve never seen you around here, Kuroo-San, it’s always Takiyo-San who comes and pick Shinobu and Keiko up”
“Yeah, I don’t usually have the time to do so, so my sister helps me out”
Tsukishima nodded, and Kuroo did feel embarrassed that not even a teacher could recognize him.
“I’m a little new here, that is maybe why I haven’t had the opportunity to get to know you, Takiyo-San did mention that she was just the twins aunt, and when I tried to call, you didn’t answer”
“Sorry about that, I work a lot so I usually turn my phone off” He had seen some missing calls from an unknown number, but he shrugged it off thinking it was some annoying seller.
“Don’t worry, but now that you are here I would like to talk to you, it’s about Keiko mostly”
Tetsuro’s eyes widened a little, concern spreading through his body at the mention of his daughter. He knew for a fact that when teachers asked parents to talk about their kids with such persistence, it wasn’t to praise them.
“Did something happen? Is it bad?” Tetsuro tried to maintain some calm, he didn't know what it was about, but it was getting hard.
“We better talk about it in private, but I would like for Keiko to be present” It was his final answer for the moment, and Tetsuro didn’t have plans to argue against it “Let’s go and find her, Shinobu can keep on playing until we are done”
Kuroo only swallowed dry, following Tsukishima through the door to the backyard. His mind might be going many miles per hour but he hoped that it wasn’t something so serious.
So once they got outside, he scanned the whole area in search of his kids, but surprisingly he didn’t see them anywhere.
The backyard wasn’t that big, it was a small kindergarten afterall, it was the size of a normal playground with some extra space for a small storage house, probably where the toys were. It shouldn’t be that hard to find his kids.
“Follow me, please” Tsukishima said, distracting him from his thoughts “They are not so far away”
“Right! Of course”
He followed the blonde a little behind, Tetsuro wouldn’t deny that he was a little curious about the place, he had never been there before, and he was amazed by how organized everything looked and how comfortable it felt. His kids always praised the teacher and were always so eager to get back every morning, maybe he was starting to understand why a little more.
There were kids playing almost everywhere, some doing sand castles, others playing with their own toys or dolls, and there was a teacher with each of the little groups, playing with them at the same time they made sure that everyone was all right.
And so his eyes landed on the only person he knew there.
“Kuroo! First time seeing you around here” Alisa greeted, waving at him with her typical wide smile plastered on her face “I thought you had work today”
Tetsuro snickered “Hm, yeah- Well my sister will not be able to pick up the kids for a while, so I gotta start doing it”
“You two know each other?” Tsukishima asked, looking between the two with a confused look on his face.
“Kuroo-San is Levochka’s boss! They went to high school together so I got to know him there” She explained, standing up from her place to approach them “Kei-Chan is new so he haven't had the time to get to know all of the parents yet”
‘And I never show up so don’t worry, it’s not his fault’ Kuroo thought, a bitter taste settling on his tongue “Don’t worry about that, we met each other inside”
“Yeah, there is a little mess there right now, but I will clean everything up once I’m done talking to him” Tsukishima said, and Kuroo felt his cheeks slightly warm up by remembering the little incident.
“Oh, don’t worry about that, Kei, if anything I can do it as soon as Suga comes back with some snacks” Alisa responded, her arm surrounding the blonde’s thin shoulders while she snickered “Shinobu and Keiko are playing with Noboru and Takara by the garden”
“Wonderful, I will go and get Keiko, so Shinobu will stay here, is that fine?”
He looked nervous, and Kuroo was a little surprised by the anxiousness in Tsukishima’s eyes. He looked so confident inside that it was funny seeing him asking for permission.
“Of course, I will gather them soon for a quick snack and I can set Keiko’s aside until she comes back”
“Thank you” He turned to look at Kuroo, same sharp eyes that caught the older a little off guard “Let’s go”
“Of course! See you Alisa”
The woman only waved, turning around afterwards so that she could take care of the kids that were beginning to look for her.
Meanwhile he continued to follow Tsukishima again, noticing how they were starting to the other side of the back yards, nearing a little fence coloured with flowers and butterflies.
“You and Alisa seemed close back there, Kei-Chan” Kuroo teased, earning a killing glare from the teacher.
“Please don’t call me that” He coldly said “And she is my brother ex-girlfriend, I know her since I was a kid and I kinda dated Lev when we were in highschool”
Kuroo’s eyes widened, walking up toTsukishima and watching him like he was an anomaly “You dated Lev? And during highschool?” He asked, but the bonde only sighted so Tetsuro decided to continue “How is that? I’ve seen his school picture, and god that hair-”
“Hair? Yours aren’t the nicest thing to see either, Kuroo-San” Tsukishima didn’t mind looking at him, but Kuroo already understood what he meant and almost let out a laugh “And it wasn’t the biggest thing, he continued and is still pestering me even after we broke up, we practically grew up as brothers so-”
“It wasn’t the most magnificent love story, right?” Tsukishima nodded, Kuroo giggled “It’s weird that he hasn’t mentioned you, he is like a human parrot and to not talk about a pretty doll face like yours is a little weird coming from him”
Tsukishima suddenly stopped, and Tetsuro would have wondered why if his brain hadn’t processed his own words so fastly.
“I-I mean-! Don’t mind me I usually say stupid things after having a bad night” And it was like he started hearing several allarms going off in his head “Not like you aren’t pretty, you are gorgeus b-but I didn’t mean to say like that and right now, you are my kids teaher and it would be innapropiate right now that you are working- and I should prbably shut up now…” So weird, he swallowed dry and decided to discreetly look at the younger.
But it only ended up in Kuroo blushing once he saw Tsukishima’s red ears and his bangs hiding those big golden eyes.
“You probably should”
Lucky, before the situation got any more embarrassing, they passed the fence and Kuroo started to clearly hear his little girl talking, and when he looked forward he saw his twins alongside two other kids playing behind the flowers.
“And then- Oh! Daddy it’s you!” Keiko exclaimed, jumping from her place, making her blue dress swirl and twin tails jump up with her “Daddy!” And in no time she was taking her brother's hand and runned in full speed towards them.
“There you are, we were searching for you!” He said, bending his knees so that he would be able to hug his kids.
“Don’t you have work? Did something happen?” Shinobu asked, catching his sister's attention who looked concerned at Kuroo.
“Your aunt is on vacation, so from now on I will have the honor to pick you two up”
Both of them gasped in surprise, hazel eyes wide and happiness shining through them. Kuroo smiled wide to assure them that what he was telling them was the truth, and took the opportunity to ruffle their black hair with his hands.
“Really!?” Both asked, almost screamed and when Tetsuro’s smile grew wider, so did theirs.
“Absolutely, one hundred percent, but you teacher want to talk me and you, princess, for a while”
Keiko’s face showed confusion, and when he looked behind her father, she saw Tsukishima smiling at her, and her smile came back.
“Just for a while, then you can go home with your father” Tsukishima explained, and both kids nodded.
“Oki! Shin, take care of Choco for me!” She handed the boy a dog plushie, and Shinobu carefully took it in his arms “Let’s go”
The office was very cute, Tetsuro thought that it mixed in well with the rest of the kindergarten. It wasn’t like a boring room you would find in a school, there were tons of drawings on the walls and the walls were painted in a pleasant pastel colour.
There were also a lot of toys too, and Keiko was having a good time playing with some Lego while Tsukishima asked Kuroo to take a seat in front of him.
“Cute office, Tsukki-Chan” Tetsuro said, smirking while continuing to look around “Yours?”
“No, we don’t have separate office’s here, we all talk to parents in here, it’s like we need separate room either” The blonde explained, taking out some papers from a folder
“So what exactly do you want to talk to me about?”
Tsukishima looked at Keiko for a few seconds, before returning to focus on Kuroo. It did worry Tetsuro for a bit, but he was trying to keep his alm so that his daughter wouldn’t get scared.
“We have noticed a behaviour in Keiko that we thought would be good to mention to you” Tsukishima said, taking out a paper and putting it in front of Kuroo “This is the nurses report of her, as you might know we do this to all of our students every year as a check up”
“Did she see something wrong? Should I take Keiko to the doctor or something?” His voice trembled a litte, trying to read through the report with a not so panicked breath.
“Well, let’s say that it’s nothing physical” Tsukishima took out another paper, this time with something that looked like notes “Our nurse, Yachi Hitoka, decided to ask Keiko some questions, to see how her studies is going”
Tetsuro lifted one of his eyebrows in confusion “And what about it? Should I be worried? Is something wrong?”
“Kuroo-San, it’s something that we have seen in many kids, and it’s nothing lethal, if you think that” Tsukishima tried to calm him down, and it kind of succeeded, but the worry was still there “We are not a school but we do have some classes to teach the kids basic stuff, and we have noticed that Keiko can get a little restless in quiet and calm surroundings”
“Okay? But isn’t that normal in kids?”
“Yeah, but we have also seen that her attention span is very short, she gets distracted a lot, and she has difficulty carrying out instructions and changing tasks very quickly, forgetting what she was supposed to do” He explained, and Kuroo began to think about those words “She doesn’t have much patients, we have noticed that she is unable on waiting for her turn, and she act’s a lot before she thinks, there had been situation that she had put herself in danger”
“What? Has she hurt herself?” Tetsuro’s voice trembled, blaming himself for not noticing this earlier.
“I have been able to stop her and explain to her about what could have happened, and sometimes she understands, but most of the times she forgets about that conversation”
It didn’t calm him down that much “Anything else?”
“The nurse told me that she has she has notices excessive physical movements in Keiko, and even though this isn’t something that bad, she can start talking excessively and when something tell her to calm down, she nods and begins talking again” He read from the notes that the nurse that written down, handin it to Kuroo afterwards.
“It says here that she has has problem multitasking and disoganizarion”
“The nurse made her to some tasks and she notices such things during that time, I have also seen them too” Tsukishima said, ponting at the report were it was written what Keiko did “There is one thing more, I don’t know if your sister has told you anything about it, but we have had problems with Keiko because of her low frustration tolerance”
“What do you mean?” Tetsuro looked up to look at the younger, who took out another paper and gave it to him.
“In other words, Keiko gets angry pretty easily, and sometimes she can’t understand a joke or even get frustrated because another kid used a tone that she didn’t like”
“Has she been involved in any fights? Sorry but my sister hasn’t mentioned anything to me” And he would make sure to ask her once she comes back.
“I usually take her somewhere else when I notice that she is about to explode, but she has screamed at other teachers or even tried to hit them or another kid”
Tetsuro’s eyes widened, mostly in surprise. Why hasn’t anyone told him this earlier? That is intolerable behaviour and he had known he would have talked to Keiko at home.
He looked at his daughter, who was still trying to build something out of those lego’s, and she looked so calm that Tetsuro almost asked where that behavior was right now.
“Lego’s are like some kind of comfort for her, she focuses on them and totally forgets about the world around her, it helps her, I buyed them in as soon as I saw this” The blonde said, and Tetsuro sighted.
“Why hasn’t any other teacher told me this before?”
“Kuroo-San, I’m a special teacher, I might help other students too but my priority is Keiko, I wanted to observe her myself before talking to you”
“So you are basically her own teacher?” Tsukishima nodded, but there was one question lingering in Kuroo minds “You said you were new”
“I’m still in college, I study to be a teacher, but I’m taking an extra course to specialise in children with mental disorders, such like ADHD, and that is what I think Keiko has”
Tetsuro kept quiet for a moment, thinking and letting the words sink in. He felt like he should have noticed this earlier, like he should have been the first one to see his own daughter's behaviour.
He was her father, shouldn’t he have been to talk to the teacher about it? What could he have missed? What would we miss in the future?
“Um, what do you think I should do? Take her to some doctor?” Tetsuro had no idea how to handle a situation like that, what he should do or what would happen.
“I recommend going to a psychologist to get a diagnosis, it will be useful in the future, especially when she enters first grade, you can also go and talk to her pediatrician if you so like”
Kuroo noded, making a mental note to make an appointment “How do you usually deal with this kind of stuff?”
“There is medicine, but I will recommend not requesting it, wait for the doctor to tell you if Keiko really need it, we will want to avoid it because it’s not the best of choices to put a little kid on medicine” And Tetsuro agreed with that, but he still wondered what he could do “You will need to learn how to cope with it, Kuroo-San, there can be problem as she grows, especially with the her low frustration tolerance, and the best thing to do is to learn how to calm her down without yelling at her or making the situation worse, her doctor will probably help you learn those ways”
“Yeah..”
He felt uneasy, Tetsuro felt worried and bad. His daughter might have ADHD and he has no idea how to deal with it. It shouldnät even be that big of a deal, he knew many co workers whose children had the same mental disorder and they seem to do fine. Why was he so worried about screwing it up?
“Kuroo-San? Are you alright?”
Kuroo tried to nod, but Tsukishima could barely see because of his arms that were starting to pull on his hair.
“I’ve been so eaten up by work that I didn’t even see that my own kid has a mental disorder, what am I supposed to do now?” Tetsuro said with honesty, voice trembling and he knew that Keiko had probably perked up because of it “What should I do?”
“Maybe start being a father”
Tetsuro’s eyes widening, looking at Tsukishima like he had just said the revelation of the year, and the blonde was looking at him with such honest eyes that he couldn’t find any words to utter. No one except his sister had been so honest with him before, not even Daishou.
And he just heard the most obvious answer coming from a college student that he just got to know.
“Kuroo-San, she isn’t growing a third arm”
“I know that, but she will need some extra care and all that stuff” He felt himself getting frustrated, irritated by the obvious statements Tsukishima was making “I don’t think you will understand, you will probably not have to deal with these kind of news”
“I might not understand what you as a father is feeling, but I will understand how Keiko will start to feel if you start to neglect her or treat her different”
Tetsuro bit his tongue, looking at Tsukishima sighting and noticing that the small clicks for the lego’s stopped.
“Okay, this might be a little personal-” He heard the blonde muttered, like he was saying it to himself “When I was little I had really bad selective mutism, and my father didn’t handle it well, and it only made me feel worse, I-” He hesitated a bit, sighting and taking a big breath before continuing “I don’t want Keiko to go through the same thing, therefor I need you to be there for her and treat her like you normally would, not like she was an abomination”
“I-I would never-” The blonde's death glare made Kuroo shut up and think about his words a second time.
“I know that it can be hard to adapt and learn, but I need you to promise yourself that you will make some effort and give it time, trust me, it help Keiko a lot”
He let the worst sink in, understanding the meaning of them. The last thing Kuroo wanted was for his daughter to start to feel bad about herself, he would never forgive himself if that happens.
“I promise”
“Good, it’s a good first step” Tsukishima said, a small smile forming on his slightly blemished face “Actually-” He took a small paper and wrote something on it, giving it to Kuroo when he was done “This is my contact information, if you ever need help or want to talk to me about your kids, just call me”
“Are you sure?” Kuroo asked, he knew how busy the work life was, and Tsukishima has studies adding to that, he didn’t want to stress him out with his small insecurities.
“Of course, as you said I’m practically Keiko’s teacher, so I will gladly help her out in anytime”
Kuroo nodded, taking the piece of paper and putting it in his pocket, he would need to add the number on it on his phone as a contact once he gets home.
“Anything more?”
“I will need you to explain this to Keiko, it can shock her if you don’t explain to her what you two will do and what changes await, she is small but she needs to be prepared for the doctors appointment”
Both looked to see the little girl staring at them in confusion, and Tetsuro smiled to assure her that everything was fine.
“You are right, I know how scary doctors can become”
Seems like Tetsuro needed to prepare himself too before that appointment.
June 04: The first time daddy got to know Tsukishima Kei.
The first time the name Kuroo Tetsuro showed up on his phone was when Kei was accompanying Shinobu only half an hour before the kindergarten closed, and he got a little confused until he remembered that Keiko’s first appointment earlier that day was a little far away from them, Kuroo came to pick her up about three hours ago and explained that to him.
And it didn’t surprise Kei, he had actually been expecting Kuroo to call him the moment he saw how fidgety the older was when he picked Keiko up, he probably had some questions or was worried about something.
But Kei hoped that Kuroo was on his way already, Shinobu was the only kid left and Tsukishima had assured Alisa that he was fine with closing everything up. Shinobu had been playing calmly but he was afraid that the kid might feel too worried about his sister.
“Kuroo-San, how is everything going?” He asked once he answered, noicing how Shinobu stopped playing and instead tried to approach him slowly.
“Hey Tsukki! I’m actually starting my way home, me and Keiko ate outside today and we forgot about the time”
Kei nodded, watching Shinobu perk even more up, his eyes basically screaming that he wanted to talk to his father.
“That’s- That is great Kuroo-San, but how did the appointment go?”
He heard Kuroo sight through the phone, and he even took a moment to answer “Everything went fine, the doctor talked to me and then she took a moment to talk to Keiko and ask her some questions, make her do some exercises”
“What did she say afterwards?”
“ I wanted to talk to you about it” Kuroo said, voice tone sounding a little dark, sad, and it worried Kei “ She said that Keiko had clear signs of adhd, but she also saw some sign of autism ”
“Oh” So that was what had Kuroo so worked up,and Kei understood, none of them actually expected that “Are you going back? For more tests?”
“Yeah, in about a week ”
Shinobu was beside him by now, and Kei gave him an assuring smile. He knew that the kid wanted to talk to his father, to see him, it was probably one of the first times he had been away from his twin sister this long, and he might have gotten worried.
“ She talked about some medication, Tsukishima ” The information confused Kei, and it was a fact that Kuroo was also surprised after telling him that they wanted to try and avoid medication “ Some kind of long acting medication, mostly for her adhd ”
“This soon? But it was the first appointment”
“ She is concerned about Keiko’s anger issues, she doesn’t want them to escalate ” He heard Kuroo’s voice tremble, and if his ears wasn’t betraying him, even a sniffle “ I have her your number, she wanted to talk to you about them, hope that’s fine with you ”
“Yeah- Yes absolutely” He answered fastly, but Kei would have lied if he said that he didn’t panic a little when he heard sniffle after sniffle from the other line of the phone “Kuroo-San?”
“Can I ask you for a favor, Tsukishima ?”
“Yes, of course”
Kuroo sounded bad, and Kei had no doubt that he probably was feeling terrible, he could only imagine what Tetsuro as a parent was feeling right now. Medicating a child wasn’t a small deal after all.
“ Could you please bring Shinobu home? I won’t be able to pick him up and I guess you have all of our information ”
Kei looked at the clock, and Kuroo was right, he wouldn’t be able to get there on time. Tetsurou also wouldn’t want his kid to see him cry.
“Yes, I’ll do it right away”
Kei didn’t have a car, he had his driver's licence but not the money to buy at least a cheap car, and the last thing in his mind was to take another loan.
Fortunately for him and Shinobu, they had gotten right in time to the bus station. Kei had looked up Kuroo’s direction and surprisingly it was only two stations away from his own, so he knew exactly how to get there.
“We are here”
He had noticed that Shinobu had been nervous, and when he asked the boy answered that it was his first time being on a bus and train, he had never been on a public transport before.
Kei didn’t get so surprised, he knew from what Alisa had told him that Kuroo was very stable financially, you could tell only from his suits that he was rich, so both Keiko and Shinobu had probably been transported by expensive cars, no wonder the kid was so nervous riding something with so much people and so much noise. Shinobu was four so he was probably also scared, the death grip on his hand was enough evidence for Kei, but he didn’t complain.
“Shin, your father said that you had a key in your backpack, can you show it to me?” He asked the boy, Kei wasn’t sure if Kuroo had arrived yet, and he didn't want to be knocking for five minutes without getting an answer.
Shinobu took his bag in hand and immediately found the spare key in one of the pockets. It had a cute little keychain of a baby crow on it and Kei smiled when Shinobu decided to try and open the door for himself.
“Thank you, sir” Kei thanked after helping the boy out, but Shinobu’s proud smile made him want to giggle “Seems like no one is home yet”
He helped Shinobu take off his shoes and jacket, taking his backpack and playing it on the little couch by the entrance, and before stepping completely in the house he took off his own outside clothes too.
“I’m hungry” Shinobu said, looking at Kei with his big eyes that begged him to make some food.
“Let’s go and wash your hands and the I’ll see what I can make”
Shinobu nodded, taking the dog plushie before running to- Somewhere, Kei wasnät sure where he was going but hopefully it was the bathroom.
“Shin, wait for me! I have no idea where I’m going..”
When Kei took a step further in the apartment, he saw how big it actually was, a little bit how he had imagined Kuroo’s house to be. High roof, big windows, stairs that lead to the second floor, and a bunch of expensive decorations that he was afraid of touching.
“Shin?”
The walls were painted white, a pretty silver pattern on them and some photographs of the little family here and there. He passed the living room and saw the big plasma television hanging on the wall and two speakers on it’s side, Kei could only imagine how it would be like to watch his series on that monster.
“Here, Tsukki-Chan” Shinobu called out, and Kei tried to follow that sound as best as possible.
“Coming!” It was on the second floor, Kei was sure, so he went up the stairs and saw all of the photographs hanging on the walls, and there were many.
They were mostly pictures of Keiko and Shinobu, from when they were still two small babies to now, the rest were of them with Tetsuro and some of the Kuroo family, Kei managed to recognize Takiyo and Fumiko on some of them.
But there was no one more out of that, no unknown women that could possibly be the kids mother. Kei knew that Kuroo was a single father, Alisa had told him that when he asked why he had never seen Keiko or Shinobu’s mother come and pick them up, he had thought that they were divorces or broken up, he hadnät thought of the possibility that she just wasn’t there.
“She disappeared the moment the twins were born, no one heard anything from her since then, not even me ” Was what Alisa had told, and the rest was just Kei comforting her from the bad memorie, apologising for asking without giving it a second thought.
“Tsukki-Chan help! I can’t reach”
The bathroom was not so far away from the stairs, exactly right beside the door that said “Keiko and Shinobu’ with many stickers on it, and when he entered he found Shinobu standing in front of the sink without managing to reach the handle.
“Daddy put my stool away” Shinobu mumbled, pouting and looking at the handle with longing.
Kei tried his hardest not to laugh.
“Here, I’ll help you”
He carried Shinobu up, surprised by how heavy he had gotten, or maybe it was just Kei and his lack of physical strength.
“Look! It smells like strawberries!” Shinobu happily said, holding up his hands when he was done washing them “Like you”
“I’ve noticed, Shin, now show me where the kitchen is so I can make you a meal”
Kei took a last look at the clock hanging on the wall before following Shinobu downstairs, turning left to come to the dinner room with an open kitchen.
And just like the rest of the house, the kitchen was big, with a whole wall full of windows to see the outside. The island in the middle was a decent size but Kei did ask himself what Kuroo needed two ovens for, but it was just his poor brain overworking itself.
“What would you like to eat?” He asked Shinobu, who managed to get up on a chair in front of the island.
Kei hoped that Tetsuro wouldn't mind him cooking something for them, Shinobu was hungry and he guessed that Tetsuro and Keiko were too, they had eaten lunch but not dinner after all.
“French toast! With dinosaur shape”
Kei giggled, reminded by how he used to be as a child and that little obsession, he wondered where his mother managed to find all those dinosaur shaped kitchen gadgets.
“Coming right away, captain”
It took some time to find all of the ingredients, but luckily Shinobu knew where most of the things were, he even took out a big cookie form shaped like a dinosaur to use to cut the bread.
Kei was currently warming the stove, already done with the batter and bread cutting. Shinobu had brought papers and color pens to draw right in front of him on the island, peacefully while Kei had put some music on his phone.
Phone that starts to ring suddenly, scaring Shinobu a bit from the high ringing tone, but he quickly focused on his drawing again.
Meanwhile Kei answered, putting his phone on speaker so that he could continue with the French Toast.
“Hello?” He answered, unsure of who it was, he didn’t see the contact name before pressing the answer button.
“ Hello Kei-Nii! ”
Kei’s heart skipped a bit when that voice greeted him, smiling wide and lovingly at the greeting. It was a pleasant surprise that his nephew called him after a whole week with stressful study nights.
“Hello Kota, how is everything going?”
“ Everythings is good ” He answered on the other line, giggles and laughter coming from the other line and smittening Kei with love “ Daddy took me and Tadeo to the doggy park! ”
“Did you play with Tadeo there?” Kei asked while putting the phone a little away from him, the frying pan was hot now and he didn’t want to accidentally ruin his phone.
“ Yeah, we played catch the ball ”
“Sounds fun!” There were some mumbling on the other line, and Kei guessed that Akiteru was trying to say something, so he used the little paus to put the soaking bread on the already warm pan.
“ Kei-Nii ?” Kota called out, so Kei let out a humming noise to let him know he was still there “ When can you come and visit us? ”
“Maybe on Sunday? I’ll have to talk to your dad about that” He had to study and do homework on Saturday, and he was unsure if Akiteru or Saeko already had made plans.
“ Daddy here! Kei-Nii wants to talk to you! ”
There were some muffled noises and a quick “ Goodbye ” comin from Kota before he figured out that his brother had taken the phone “Nii-San?”
“ Hey Kei! Sorry if you are busy right now, Kota really wanted to talk to you ” His brother apologised, probably thinking that Kei was home and trying to study.
“Don’t worry, Kota can call me whenever he wants” He said while turning to look at Shinobu, that was still calmly drawing some kind of green thing “I’m not really so busy right now either”
“ Oh? Are you home? ”
“No, I-Em” He didn’t know how to explain the situation to his brother, it wasn’t the most normal thing for a teacher to be on one of their students home afterall “I’m actually with one of my students...in their house”
“ Why? Did something happen ?”
“The father needed help to take his son back home, he wouldn’t make it before the closing time, so I’m waiting for him to come home with his daughter”
“ Hm ” Akiteru was probably thinking about the situation, and Kei was relieved when he heard a snicker coming from him “ Well, you know what you are doing !”
“Yeah, I guess…” He flipped the second bread, clearing his voice before speaking again “How are you? Free for the night?”
“ Saeko had to work some overtime, so she will be coming home a little late, I’m just here making some dinner ”
“Aha, Kota told me that you took him to the doggy park today” He said, and Akiteru went immediately quiet “So I guess he missed school?”
“ No! He didn’t miss school ” Akiteru stated, and kei smirked when he noticed his brother nervous tone “ Something happened during the break so I picked him up earlier ”
“And what exactly happened?”
His brother was protective over Kota, both Saeko and Akitery were and Kei totally understood why. It could be hard for a kid like Kota to live a normal life, but it sometimes came to a point where they were a little too overprotective.
“ The teacher called and told me that he had fallen because he tried to ride a tricycle ” Akiteru explained “ He was bleeding and he hit his head lightly ”
“And what did Kota say?”
“ He didn’t really want to go, but I didn’t want to risk anything happening ”
Kei sighted, serving two french toast in a small plate alongside strawberries and blueberries.
Akiteru and Saeko were protective, Kei got that, but sometimes he felt like they tried to protect Kota a little too much from the world, like they didn’t allow him to learn from his mistakes.
“Well, it was good that you picked him up if he hit his head, but you can’t be doing it every time he gets hurt in school, that kind of stuff happens all the time Akiteru”
“ I know, but I’m just afraid that someday I will get a call from the hospital again ”
“I know”
Kei was also afraid of it happening again. Kota had been in kindergarten that day and an accident happened where he was badly injured, Akiteru had called him on the verge of crying and when he got to the hospital both his mother and Saeko were practically screaming at the teacher for not taking care of the kids right.
It was a nightmare of a day that nobody would want to go through again.
“He will grow up, Aki, and you will need to teach him that there are things that he won’t be able to do, or else he will get hurt and this time by himself”
Kota was still a kid after all, he was about to turn seven and as time passed he got more curious about things, he wanted to do more stuff. Unfortunately he has a condition that limits him, and honestly it is the parents job to teach him that.
Telling him that he can do whatever he wants can possibly hurt him.
“ I will talk to him, me and Saeko will ” Akiteru said, pleasing Kei “ It’s a promise”
“Good, and make sure that he understands what you will say” He turned the stove off when he was done with the last toast, putting the frying pan away to let it cool off “I’ll be visit you this Sunday around lunch time if you are free”
“ Of course! We have nothing to do and I think that Ryu and Kiyoko will come by too ”
“Sweet, see you then”
Akiteru said his goodbye and Kei ended the call, turning around to sit for a while by the island, right in front of Shinobu that was suspiciously looking at him straight in the eye.
“Who was that?” The boy asked, dropping the green color pen on the concrete of the marmol.
He had his attention completely on Kei.
“It was my older brother, Akiteru” Kei answered, but it didn’t please Shinobu that much.
“No! The first one”
“Oh, it was my nephew, Kota, he is my brothers son”
Shinobu nodded, seemingly more pleased that the right question was answered. Kei guessed that he got more curious about the other kid he talked to.
“Why does he talk so slow?”
Ah, that’s why he was so curious. Who knows, maybe it was his first time hearing someone with such a condition like Kota’s.
“Kota has CP, it affect his ability to move and has it hard to move his muscles” Kei tried to explain as simple as he could, he had never had the opportunity to tell a four year old was cerebral palsy is “He can’t move his muscles around his month so well, that is why he can’t talk as fast as you and me”
“Oh, can-”
Shinobu was interrupted by the sound of some keys by the front door, probably Kuroo and Keiko that finally arrived.
None of them said anything, they just kept staring at the opening in the dinner room, waiting for either Tetsuro or Keiko to show up. And they heard Kuroo helping Keiko with taking off her jacket and shoes, before the sound of their footsteps started to come towards the kitchen.
“Ah! Tsukki? You are still here?” Tetsuro asked when he appeared in front of them, Keiko standing sleepily beside him.
Kei wanted to face palm at the question “Well yeah, I couldn’t just leave Shinobu here all alone”
“Tsukki-Chan made french toast!”
Tetsuro blinked in surprise for a few seconds, looking between Kei and the two plated with french toast and berries. Did he really think that Kei would leave Shinobu all alone until they got back home? What kind of adult would leave a child to try his luck?
“Wow, thank you, like seriously, thank you a lot Tsukishima” Tetsuro murmed, looking at Kei like he was some kind of blessing sent from god “I-Em, can I pay you for this favor? Anything?”
“Oh! No Kuroo-San, it's really not necessary” The only thing he did was stay with Shinobu and make him some food, he couldn’t let Kuroo pay him for something like that “I won’t accept any money”
“Why don’t you stay for a drink then? I got some fine wine and I can get you dinner if you haven’t eaten anything yet”
“I still have to work tomorrow, I don’t think it’s the best time to drink”
Kuroo crosses his arms, probably thinking of another possible way to repay him for the favor, and Kei was honestly getting a little nervous. He didn’t want Kuroo to come up with something big, money is absolutely a no.
“Next week on wednesday I will need to go earlier from the kindergarden, if you are free we can go out and eat lunch together?” Kei suggested, thinking that it was the most not-so-expensive option that he could come up with.
“That’s fine! I can pick you up if you would be okay with that” Kuroo said excitedly, smiling wider and maybe Kei liked that he seemed a little more relieved than what he sounded through the phone.
“Yeah, that’s fine with me”
“It’s a date then!” Was what Kuroo said before disappearing with Keiko to help her wash her hands.
Kei couldn’t stop the blush from spreading all the way up to his ears.
June 11: The first time daddy asked Kei for help, and didn’t regret it.
“You have been suspiciously quiet today, Kei, is everything all right?” Alisa asked, concern evident in her voice that made Kei feel slightly bad over not letting her know what was happening that day.
“Not really, no”
It was wednesday, which meant that Kuroo would be picking him up for their little lunch meeting, and Kei hasn’t told anyone that fact yet.
Sugawara had been glaring at him all morning because “I think it’s weird that you are so attentive to your phone today, Kei”, which caused the other teachers to stare at him, probably looking for some kind of answer.
Alisa, on the other hand, had the opposite reaction to it, she had been filled with concern all day, asking him questions that honestly made Kei feel worse for not telling her the real reason why he acted a little differently.
But how should he say that he is about to go out on a lunch date with two of his students' fathers? Kei wasn’t even sure if Kuroo really saw it as a date-date, and if it really was he would be breaking one of the most important rules in the book.
Alisa was like an older sister to him, and Kei doesn’t lie to the people that are close to him, mostly because they read him like a book, but he had no clue what he should say to answer her questions.
It didn’t help that they were alone in the kitchen and she was looking at him up and down for answers.
“Kei, your face is all red, you can’t tell me that nothing is happening” She said, puting the butter knife down and putting their sandwich-work on hold “Are you sick?”
“No, it’s not that Alisa, it’s just that…” ‘I’m about to eat lunch with the rich father and two and there is a possibility that he think it’s a date’
Okay, he would surely get fired if he says that out loud.
“Well I’m about to send you home earlier if you don’t tell what it is, remember that I’m your supervisor and one call to your teacher and you will be-”
“I’m going to eat lunch with Kuroo-San”
They got quiet, and Kei could already feel his entire body getting warm and red, it was needless to say that he didn’t handle his shyness so well.
But Alisa’s gasp made him feel slightly calmer, he guessed, it could only mean that her little hidden side came out.
“As in a date? Dear god, Kei, I can’t believe you finally got yourself a boyfriend! And a rich one” She smirked, hitting his left arm lightly as a way to say that he had her whole support.
Alisa likes gossip, if someone ever had a juicy story to tell, she would be all ears, and she absolutely loved it when it involved people close to her.
Kei felt sorry for Lev, sometimes.
“It’s not a date! Or at least I don’t think it is” He murmured the last part, it was incredible how he could be so unsure about that topic, even when Kuroo himself had told him that it indeed was “He is just inviting me for lunch because I helped taking care of Shinobu when he was out with Keiko”
“That’s how a love story always starts, my little Kei, the poor, hard working maid that finds love in a rich man that won’t do it the traditional way” Alisa said dreamily, spinning around once and almost tipping the pack of juice off the counter.
“I’m not Cinderella, Ali, and you make it sound more like a sugar daddy story than a fairy tail” He took the bread from her hand to continue it himself, already knowing that the older would be too much in her own mind to finish anything up “Poor, hard working maid? Really?”
“I don’t know what your plans are with mister Kuroo”
“He is literally a father!”
Alisa blasted in laughter holding her stomach and looking like she was about to faint on the floor. Kei doesn't remember her being like this when he dated Lev, but guess that he should have expected it just because she is Lev’s sister.
“C’mon Kei! We both know that everyone with daddy issues have a little thing for-”
“Don’t say it here, please” Kei managed to interrupt her in time by putting a finger over her lips “I will not talk about this in a place full of children, Alisa”
“So sensitive” She said, going back to her original work “Like you were a virg-”
“Alisa!”
“I’m kidding Kei-Chan!”
Kei sighted, his face already deep red by now, and for some reason it only made Alisa snicker. Now, thanks to her, he was starting to get some images in his mind that he would prefer to hide in the deepest part of his brain.
“But what do you mean with ‘I don’t think it’s a date’ though?” She asked when she finally calmed down, only a small smirk as evidence of her little laughing break.
“It was suppose to just be a hang out for lunch, I suggested it to prevent Kuroo-San from doing something too big” He started to recall the other night, and the memorie made his cheeks only flush even more “He suddenly said that it was a date and now I’m not sure if I’m about to go to a romantic date with one of my students father”
“Well you better hurry up and decide because the expensive truck car did just arrive”
Kei shoots up immediately, looking through the window to encounter the one and only Kuroo Tetsuro getting out of his car.
Was it already time? How much did he spend talking with Alisa? Kei hasn’t even had the time to try and look more presentable. Kuroo was in a very good looking suit and meanwhile blondie had an oversized kirby hoodie and a pair of messy jeans, how could he let this happen?
“I can’t go up to him looking like this” Kei murmured, and he didn’t intend for Alisa to hear it.
“I have a dress in my car-”
“Don’t even think about it”
He took off the apron after finishing the last sandwich he would do for the day, Alisa following his steps right behind him, probably curious about how this entire situation would turn out.
“Are you going to go out or what?” Alisa asked, almost pushing Kei outside and through the door.
“Am I not allowed to prepare myself before going out and facing my destiny?”
Kei felt like he hadn’t gone on a date in forever, if this was a date it would probably be the first one in a long time. College had totally eaten him up and if Lev or Tadashi didn’t check on him from time to time he would probably end up starving.
Dear god, is he really ready for this?
“Don’t overthink this, you just gotta let it go and see what the futures hold!”
That was the last thing Alisa said before totally pushing out the door, and if it hadn’t been for a pair of very well worked arms, Kei would probably have had face palmed right there, right then.
Kuroo woke up on the happy side this morning, he made breakfast for his kids and helped them get ready for kindergarten, just like a father should do. He took their bags, made sure that their tablets were on about two times and dropped them off without any problem.
Then he remembered the absolute fool he made out of himself last week and everything went downhill.
What kind of rational human being would tell the teacher of their children that a totally friendly lunch is actually a date? Who would do something like that?
Tetsuro had no idea what came over him, maybe it was because he was extremely tired that day and Tsukishima had been so nice that the words just escaped his mouth.
And Kuroo didn’t even notice it until he saw how red Tsukishima was when he said his “Goodbye”, and Shinobu teased him over going on a “very romantic” date.
Tetsuro was embarrassed, he didn’t know Tsukishima so well and again, he was his kids teacher, wasn’t there an unwritten rule about dating your kids teacher? And maybe Kei got freaked out and that was the last ting Kuroo needed, the blonde had helped him out a lot recently and he didn’t want his mistake to affect Shinobu’s and Keiko’s relationship with Tsukishima, Keiko already needed help and in Tetsuro’s eyes Tsukishima was the perfect person to provide her that help.
Kuroo had been nervous the whole morning because of the fear that Tsukishima would be mad at him, he even expected that the blonde would turn him down and cancel their lunch meeting.
He did not expect for Tsukishima to basically fall in his arms the moment Tetsuro opened the entrance door.
“Are- Are you okay? Are you hurt somewhere?”
Tsukishima was extremely red, and if it wasn’t for the situation the both of them were in Kuroo would have thought that he was sick.
Tetsuro himself could feel his cheeks warming up, and from the snickered that he could hear from behind the blond he guessed that someone else was enjoying all of this.
“Y-Yeah, I’m fine” Tsukishima said, standing up straight and fixing his glasses that almost fell off “Thank you”
“Your welcome”
They stayed in silence for a few seconds, probably processing what had just happened, or trying to come over the embarrassment. Tsukishima was fidgeting with his hands, most likely nervous, and Tetsuro found it rather cute.
Actually, Tetsuro found out that Tsukishima was generally cute and pretty, he had that feminine touch to his face that made his cheeks adorably round and eyes big, decorated with long lashes.
And now that Kuroo was taking a good look, the younger was practically the whole opposite of himself. Skinny, pale, Tsukishima reminded Tetsuro of a porcelain doll.
“Tet-!”
“Should we go now, Kuroo-San? I’m actually quite hungry” The blonde said, interrupting Alisa who was looking at them mockinly from her place.
Tetsuro perked up, getting dragged out from his train of thought to focus on what was actually happening “Yes! We should get there in time, right when I set the reservation”
“Reservation?”
How can something as simple as a lunch meeting (or date) backfires?
When Kei suggested lunch, he thought that they would go to a small, cozy place where they could get some easy meals. There was a lunch plaza not so far away from the kindergarten where they had a lot of different restaurants with variation.
He did not plan on going to something expensive, but Kuroo had decided to take them to Onigiri Miya to enjoy a Japanese three course meal with some sake to accompany them.
“Is-Is it really necessary to eat here?”
Kei was observing everything, his surroundings, how extremely big the place was, and especially the people that were coming there to eat.
Men and women dressed in very nice clothes, and Kei could only imagine how much those dresses and suits cost, even their handbags were probably more expensive than his oversized hoodie.
“Hm? Don’t you like this food?” Kuroo asked, like he wasn’t seeing the difference between Kei and the other people coming in and out of that entrance door.
“No, but I just-” He would sound silly, like some kind of kid, but Kuroo was still looking at him with those sharp eyes and again. Kei was a really bad liar “I probably won’t fit in there anyways”
The next thing, or more like the next sound Kei heard, made his ears almost explode, because he had no idea that Kuroo would be able to make that kind of sound. He was laughing but it sounded like one of those hyenas from the lion king.
“Fit in? We are getting lunch, Tsukishima!” Kuroo said after calming down, making Kei scoff “I don’t think you have to fit in anywhere to get lunch”
“Don't these kinds of places have a dress code or something?”
“Nope, so don’t worry” The older responded, smiling and taking his time to put his arm around Kei’s shoulders “Plus, if you ask me I think you look very pretty”
Was that- Was Kuroo trying to flirt with him? Was this really a date then? Was it weird that Kei was freaking out a little bit because of this?
Should he flirt back?
“You look pretty handsome too, Kuroo-San”
If he was going to do it, then the least thing he could do was to at least have a little fun. Kuroo wasn’t really some bad company, maybe Kei would be able to enjoy it at least a little bit then.
“Do you really think it’s okay for me to go in- Well, like this?”
Kuroo gave him a reassuring smile, squishing his shoulder the slightest to give him support.
“I think it will be a pleasure to accompany someone like you on this wonderful day, doctor Tsukishima”
It was a silly joke, but it was the start of a very fun time that Tsukishima would gladly repit.
June 19: The day that daddy and Kei had their first “lunch meeting”.
“Thank for staying with the kids, Kei, I know that it came out of nowhere but I had no idea that I had a meeting this late”
They were currently on Tetsuro’s living room, cuddling on the couch while seeing the disney movie that Shinobu and Kaori weren’t able to finish before falling asleep on top of each other.
Tetsuro had to work overtime that Friday night, something went wrong so obviously he and Daishou had to come up with a solution to fix it. They came up with a presentation so that the rest of the employees could start working on it the next morning.
And because he would be coming home late, Tetsuro had the magnificent idea to call his wonderful and very beautiful and talented boyfriend to ask him if he could take care of the twins while he was gone.
Kei was supposed to studie, but he couldn’t say no to watch for Shinobu and Keiko, even though he had been there last night and the kids would probably start to be suspicious of them.
“No problem Tetsu, plus I managed to study a little bit while I was making them dinner”
The thing is, Shinodu and Keiko had no idea that they were together, Tetsuro had only told them that Kei had become a very good friend and when they actually got together, Kuroo had an existential crisis and had no idea how he would tell his children that he had started dating someone.
Their teacher.
“Tetsu” Kei called out, whispering so that the twins wouldn’t wake up “Have you thought of telling them yet?”
Tetsuro swallowed dry, he had been postponing it ever since they talked about it. He had no idea how he would tell Shinobu and Kaori that he had a boyfriend, and it wasn’t because it was a guy he was dating, but because he knew that it could be hard for kids to accept that their single parent had someone else. Tetsuro went through that with his mother, and it was hard for him in the beginning to accept his step-father.
“I have thought about it, I just don’t know how to-”
“How what?”
Both of them looked down on the floor, right where Keiko was waking up from her place on her brother's back, and Shinobu was on his way to waking up too.
“Are you going to tell us something, daddy?” She asked, without stuttering, without yawning, and there was no actual sign of tiredness anymore.
“Keiko! You are awake” Tetsuro said, like it wasn’t the most obvious thing.
“Yeah, and you were going to tell us something”
“Why is Tsukki still here? Are you going out again?” Shinobu was now awake, and as always he was observing the one thing that Tetsuro needed to explain but didn’t know how.
“I-Em...Tsukki he, well he…”
Tetsuro turned to look at the blondes so that he could help him come up with an excuse, but Kei didn’t say anything. He was staring at Tetsuro with those big golden eyes that Kuroo understood what he wanted him to do.
Kei wanted him to stop lying and tell his kids what was really going on.
‘They are not stupid’ was what Kei had told him the night they sat down and talked about it, and as always he was right, in no time both Shinobu and Keiko would manage to find out by themselves.
“Actually, kids, I have wanted to tell you something for some time now” He began saying, sitting up straight so that he could see them well.
“Really? Is it something bad?” Keiko asked, imitating what her father just did and holding Shinobu’s arm so that he would do the same.
“No, absolutely not, it’s actually something good” Tetsuro smiled, trying to assure them that everything was okay.
But his mind was racing hundreds of miles per hour, trying to think of the perfect words to tell his kids the big news, and he regretted not having listened to his Japanese teacher in high school because that word list might have come in handy that day.
“Remember when you asked me why everyone had a mommy except you two?”
Both twins looked at each other, and slowly nodded. That day wasn’t exactöy the best, some kids had been bugging them about the subject, so it was still a sour thing to remember.
“You didn’t want to answer” Shinobu remembered, and Tetsuro laughed awkwardly.
“Yeah, but I think I can tell you now”
He felt a slender hand take a hold of his, and Tetsuro was so thankful that Kei was with him at that moment, maybe he needed the little push to be able to find the courage to tell his children.
“Your mommy was an unstable person” Tetsuro said, squishing the pale hand to get a little bit more of that courage “She had a...problem that she couldn’t stop, and that affected her decisions a lot-”
“Was that why she runned away?”
Tetsuro sucked in a sharp breath, a little confused over how they knew what their mother did, but there was a possibility that they overheard when he talked to Daishou or Kenma.
“Yeah, she decided that she wouldn’t be able to take care of you, and I accepted that, because it was for the best” He explained, turning his head to look at Kei, and smiled “And I decided to take care of you, alone, because I didn’t want to go through that again and hurt you”
It was an insecurity that Tetsuro had hidden for a better long time, not even Kei knew about it, but he didn’t show any sign of offense and anger, just a small smile and a nodd.
“But I was kinda wrong, and I lucky enough to find a very special person, that didn’t care I came with two extra packages, and that I love very, very much”
He heard Kei lightly giggle, and Tetsuro himself couldn’t hold in the little snicker when he felt a pair of soft lips on his right cheek.
It was going better than he thought it would.
“So you and Tsukki-Chan are together?” Shinobu asked, and both adults could see how Keiko’s eyes slowly blew wide.
“Yes, we are”
Shinobu nodded, and he looked at his sister almost like he was trying to ask her a question. Tetsuro thought that they needed to process everything, but right when he was about to talk again, Keiko spoke.
“Does that mean that we have another daddy now?”
Tetsuro turned to look at Kei again, and he was a little surprised when saw the blush spreading on his boyfriend’s pale face and up to his ears.
He had to remind himself that Kei still was younger than him, even though he acted pretty mature, he was still in college and maybe just that was still a little too soon for him.
“Well-” Kei said, and after taking a long deep breath, he continued “I-If you want me to be, t-then yes”
A wide smile spread over Keiko’s face, and not so long after Shinobu followed her same path, both jumped on Tetsuro to give him a big hug, causing him to trip and land on the ground.
They dragged Kei down the moment they got their eyes on him.
August 6: I got a new daddy!
It was starting to get dark, the rain was pouring down and Tetsuro almost cut Keiko’s onytale of when he was trying to make a braid, it was like the gods were trying to give hima sign, a sign that said that tonight was going to go anything but nice.
A week ago, Kei had told him that his family wanted to meet him officially, and Tetsuro was very fine with it, after all Kei had told him that his mother was very calm and from what she had heard, she liked him.
The problem was the older brother.
Tetsuro had bad experiences with older brothers, he dated a girl in high school and her dear brother accidentally saw them make out one night, and afterwards he was getting chased by a college student that blamed Kuroo for taking his sister’s V-card, something that Tetsuro didn’t do.
He had seen Akiteru in pictures and even heard him talk to Kei by the phone, and honestly he sounded like a sweet older brother. But the sweet ones are usually the worst.
Shinobu was pretty excited though, apparently he wanted to meet Kei’s nephew because ‘He is very interesting, dad!’ and Tetsuro was happy for him, maybe he would get a new friend.
But it didn’t calm him down, because if Akiteru had a kid meant that he was protective by nature, and from what Kei had told him they were very close, and more closeness meant more protectiveness.
“Don’t be scared, dad, you will start to sweat!” Keiko told him from her place back in the car, and Tetsuro scoffed.
“Dad is not scared, Keiko, I’m is just a little worried that Kei’s family won’t like me and will make me leave Kei and all that happiness and love behind”
“You have been watching too much spanish series, dad”
He looked at Shinobu and gasped, making the boy roll his eyes “It was Kei that introduced me to them, and Netflix have pretty good ones”
Shinobu sighted, focusing his attention on the Ipad in front of him. He was watching some kid’s show that Tetsuro put on everytime they went on a car ride, it distracted him from getting sick.
They were meeting up at a restaurant near the mall, it was pretty well known because of it’s desserts and Tetsuro had never been there, so he ditched his idea of meeting up at a hotel because when he gave it a good thought, he didn’t want the older brother to feel inferior, that is a bad first impression.
“We are here!”
He managed to find a spot near the entrance to park, and in no time he was already walking towards the reception desk with his heart throbbing in his throat.
“Hey, how was the ride?” Kei asked when he got to him, he came earlier to help his mother orientate, she took the train all the way from Miyagi and had never been in Tokyo before, so she needed the help “My mom and brother are already here” He informed, but it didn’t make Tetsuro feel better “Someone look extra handsome tonight”
“Thank you, you look stunning” He took of his jacked and helped the twins to the same, they were soaked so he asked the receptionist to hang them somewhere else “And I think I’m going to throw up”
“C’mon, don’t be so nervous, you will see that everything will be fine, Aki-nii isn’t so bad”
“Aki-nii? Don’t you understand how big of a red flag that is to me? It feels like I’m taking his little baby away from him”
“Now you are overreacting, you will see that once you meet him, everything is going to go smoothly” Kei assured him, but the little voice in Tetsuro’s head was telling him otherwise “Now let’s go, they are waiting”
Kuroo nodded, and with all the streigh his body could handle, he stepped forwards and took hold of Kei’s hand, his kids going in front of them.
And then after walking towards a corner of the room, Tetsuro saw a big round table filled with laughter, and he heard the voice quiet down, and maybe Kei was right, everything could go smoothly.
“So you must be Tetsuro, it’s a pleasure to meet you” The women said, standing up and in all honestly it made Kuroo more nervous, but in a good way “I’m Tsukishima Tsukiko, Kei’s mother”
Tetsuro smiled, reaching out a hand that she gladly took “Kuroo Tetsuro, and the pleasure is mine”
Tsukiko laughed, or more like snickers, and for a second Tetsuro thought that he had said something funny. But then he felt a pair of arms surround him in a hug and he couldn’t help the blush on his cheeks from spreading.
“Oh, don’t get so familiar with me, the moment you put that ring on my sons finger you official became part of the family, even though the wedding hasn’t be done yet”
“O-Of course! Thank you, Tsukiko-San!”
The woman gave him a reassuring smile, and then her eyes looked down, focused on the two little persons clinging to their father's leg.
“You two must be Shinobu and Keiko, Kei has told me very interesting stories about you two”
“Really?” Keiko asked, stepping forwards to look completely up at the blonde “Did he tell you how I managed to score one point on football yesterday?”
“No, but it’s a story I would love to hear”
Keiko looked at her father, asking for some kind of permission that Tetsuro gave her, and just like that she jumped up on a chair, excited to tell Tsukiko about how yesterday's football match went.
“Kuroo-San” Kuroo turned away from them, instead greeting the one sweet older brother that was suspiciously smiling at him “I’m Akiteru, Kei’s brother”
He sounded sweet, he looked gentle, nothing scary like the one he saw in his high school years, and until now the handshake was nothing firmer than normal “Hi! And you can call me Tetsuro, soon Kei will also be Kuroo so-”
“Yeah, we will see about that”
‘The sweetest are the worst, Tetsuro, always remember that’
“Don’t try and scare him off Aki” The girl behind him said, standing to reach out her hand towards Kuroo “I’m Saeko, Akiteru’s wife”
“Hello..”
This Saeko was, pretty much the opposite of Akiteru, she literally took him by the arm to make him sit down, and she reminded him of the women he works with in the company. Her suit was very nice and she even talked like them, just more happy and energized, like some businesswoman on Red Bulls.
“It’s your brother's fiance, Kei has a good judgement so calm down baby” She said, laughing at the end when she saw her husband blush.
“I still have to see for myself, Sae”He thought back, looking bat at Kuroo that almost backed off from the death glare.
But then something clicked in Tetsuro’s mind, an observation. And he looked back between Saeko and Akiteru and realized something, even remembering something that Kei told him.
Akiteru is a househusband, and if Tetsuro managed to impress him he would be the best brother in law that he could ever have! Imagine all the baby pictures of Kei he would be able to get.
“Kei-Nii! You are here”
Tetsuro felt someone drag on his pants, and when he looked down at Shinobu he saw how the boy was focused on someone else, that someone was the kid Kei was hugging.
“Hi Kota, how are you?” Kei asked him, looking at him in such a lovely way that Tetsuro could die from cuteness right there and then.
“Ah, sorry for not introducing you, Tetsuro-San” He heard Akiteru say, and when Tetsuro turned his head to see him, the older had a very gentle smile on his face “That’s Kota, our son”
“Yeah, Kei has told me a lot about him” Tetsuro said, and it only made Akiteru and Saeko smile wider “I’ve observed him when he talks, Kei loves him very much”
The kids weren't normal, Tetsuro could already observe. He used crutches to help him walk and when he hugged Kei it was like he had it difficult to move his arms around. He also had very thick glasses on and he moved his head around a lot, Tetsuro even thought that he had difficulty maintaining eye contact.
And then he saw Kei interacting with him, and it was like any other conversation, and the smile that the kid was wearing made Tetsuro’s heart warm up. Kota looked so happy talking to Kei and vice versa, it reminded him of when he interacted with his kids.
“Yes, they have a very special bond, Kei was the one that took care of him when he was a baby, even a toddler” He explained, and it was actually something that Kuroo had no idea about “Me and Saeko had to work, Kota was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at a very young age and by then we had it difficult to afford treatment, so Kei helped us out”
“Is that why he got interested in the subject?”
“I think it was an important factor, and when I asked he told me that he was doing it to help more kids like Kota, the ones that didn’t get the same help, and after what he through with our father “Akiteru sighted, swallowing when remembering the various events “I was afraid that he would be overwork himself, trigger a trauma or something”
“You know” Tetsuro said, catching both parents attention “My daughter was diagnosed with Autism and ADHD, and I got very surprising to how Kei managed to handle he, he knew exactly what he was doing while I had no clue, he even helped me out” He smiled when he remembered it, he was such a mess back “I was scared of doing something wrong, but he kept calm and I think he helped Keiko more than me”
“Well, when he starts something it’s hard for him to stop until he is completely finished”
“Which in this case is never”
Tetsuro snickers, Akiteru was right, when it comes to the medical issues, especially when this has to do with the brain, it’s hard to find an instant solution, they discover new things everyday after all.
“Tetsu” Kuroo turned his sight to look at Kei, that was now helping the kid to sit down besides Saeko “This is Kota, Kota this is my fiancé Tetsuro”
“Hello! Nice to meet you!”
Tetsuro reached a hand out, ruffling the boy's brown hair and making him laugh.
“Nice to meet you too, Kota” He said with a smile.
“Shinobu, do you want to say hello too?” Kei asked him, and Shinobu immediately nodded.
He detached himself from his fathers leg and walked towards the other boy, holding his toy tight against his chest.
“Hi, I’m Shinobu” He greeted, showing his toy to Kota afterwards “And this is Niu, he is a grizzly”
“Oh, Hi Shinobu and Niu”
Shinobu smiled, it was one of the first times that someone actually greeted Niu, the other kids usually just tell him that he has a nice toy.
“Do you want to be friends?” Kota asked, and Shinobu felt like he could jump from happiness.
“Yes! I want to”
They had a great night, and Tetsuro really felt stupid when he was going home from overthiking everything, Kei and the kids mocked him for it.
May 16: Our family got even bigger!
“We have gathered here today to celebrate the wedding and the love that these two people so much have towards each other”
His father was actually getting married today, this was actually happening and both Keiko and Shinobu couldn’t be more happy about it.
Their dad had been very nervous ever since the morning, Shinobu watched him almost destroy the hairdresser's work when he tried to calm himself down. But now he was standing in front of all of them like nothing happened before, and it mayde both kids want to laugh.
Kei had been much more calm, he even helped Keiko get ready even though he should have been focusing on himself, but she rewarded him with a beautiful yellow rose that contrasted perfectly with the white suit.
“I ask you to affirm your willingness to enter the covenant of marriage and to share all the joys and sorrows of your lives and your relationship, whatever the future may hold”
Tetsuro couldn’t stop smiling, and it was wide and lovely, the same smile that the twins had seen on him ever since he said that he was dating Kei, and their father’s happiness made them want to giggle in joy.
“Kuroo Tetsuro, do you take this man to be your husband? Do you promise to love him, comfort him, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health as long as you both shall live?”
Shinobu felt Keiko take his hand, and when he turned to look at her, her eyes were glazed and he guessed that she would start crying in any minute, she was practically shaking on her seat.
“Yes, I do”
And there was the first tear shedding.
“Tsukishima Kei, do you take this man to be your husband? Do you promise to love him, comfort him, honor and keep him, in sickness and in health as long as you both shall live?”
Both of them held their breaths, and they could already guess that their dad was doing the same.
“Yes I do”
They saw Tetsuro laugh, a small snicker that not everyone noticed, but it was something both Kei and the twins did. He was happy.
“Then repeat after me-”
It was reasurment, a promise, uncle Saeko had told them that when they asked her why they asked so many questions on weddings.
‘It’s like writing a law that shall never get broken’
“I take you, this day as my husband. I promise to walk by your side forever as your best friend and your soul mate. You are my beloved one and I am proud to marry you. I promise to support your dreams and to be there for you all our lives”
Shinobu was nervous about being the ring boy, he didn’t want to accidentally lose the rings or drop them, nothing like Keiko who was very excited about being the flower girl.
But now that he actually was walking towards his father and Kei, he didn’t feel that nervousness anymore, he was actually more joyful than nervous, when he saw the smiles on his fathers face he wanted to laugh, and when Kei looked at him and whispered what a good job he did, he wanted to run and hug.
Maybe the pep talk that Kota gave him really helped him out.
“I, Kuroo Tetsuro, give you, Tsukishima Kei, this ring as a symbol of my commitment to love, honor, and respect you”
His voice trembled, but Shinobu could actually figure out why, the cristalic effect on his fathers eyes told him everything.
“And I, Tsukishima Kei, give you, Kuroo Tetsuro, this ring as a symbol of my commitment to love, honor, and respect you”
Keiko put her hands over her mouth, her feet going back and forth in excitement, she just wanted to run to both of them and hug them, laugh and even cry, but she was so focused on their words that she couldn’t.
She forgot to take her medicine today, but she didn’t regret it, she wanted to express her happiness and not just look bored while seeing her own father get married. Shinobu understood and he was with her on that decision, he didn’t make her aunty get distracted that morning for no reason.
“Kuroo Tetsuro and Tsukishima Kei, by the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and husband. Groom, you may kiss your loved one”
Tetsuro didn’t wait another minute, he surrounded Kei by the waist and hugged him close, lifting him up and connected their lips together in a gentle kiss that was full of love, adorness and life.
Everyone clapped, and with the thrill of the moment Keiko jumped up from her seat and runned with all her power to the couple, Shinobu following right behind her.
Both of them were ready to catch them.
“It is my pleasure to present to you Kuroo Teturo and Kuroo Kei as husband and husband!”
Both Kei and Tetsuro hugged the children close to them, smiling wide and laughing together with their small public. They heard the piano start playing again, a beautiful tune that the four of them would remember for the rest of their lives.
Tetsuro kissed his now husband one last time before going down to greet their family and friend, and Keiko couldn’t stop telling everyone how happy she was over having the two best dads in the entire world.
Shinobu was holding Kei’s hand tight, waving at Kota that was approaching them, and even though he got a little overwhelmed with all of the people surrounding them, he didn’t stop laughing.
He felt tears running down his cheeks and he honestly got a little surprised, he wasn’t one to cry that easily, his feelings were overwhelming, but not on a bad day. He felt so full of joy that it was probably starting to escape from his eyes.
It was normal, right? His father was so happy that it was smittening him, Keiko was crying her heart out and Kei himself was about to do the same.
Him and Keiko weren't actually alone this time, was it weird to realize it just now? His father had been so present that it was incredible to think about, and now they had doubled the company! Kei has been like a blessing to them and it has felt great.
They had bedtime stores now, and a goodmorning from both their father and Kei everytime they woke up, they had homemade dinner to look up to and no more night where they had to go and sleep over their aunt.
Just like a family.
“We are always going to be together, right?” Shinobu asked Kei, tightening his small grip on his hand and lips trembling “You are never going to leave?”
Kei crunched down, a reassuring smile on his face while he cupped Shinobu’s cheeks, giving his small nose a small peck before speaking.
“I will never disappear Shinobu, not now, not never” He said, and it made Shinobu cry out, harder “It’s a promise Shin”
“Thank you for coming to our lives, Tsukki” He managed to say in betweens, and Kei pulled him into a hug, sniffing himself.
“Thank you for accepting me”
July 19: Grandma said that we are officially a family now! nobody can bug me at school anymore and I slept over at uncle Aki’s home! Kota has a really big room and aunty Sae teached Keiko how to draw a very pretty flower on the window.
Dad and Kei said that they would come and get us tomorrow, and then we are all going to travel to Egypt! Daddy said that we will see camels there, I really like camels.
I have never felt this happy before, I will like I’m going to explode! But Keiko needs help to braid her hair, so I will stop writing now!
PS/ Grandma helped me write this, that is why it’s so pretty.
With love and happiness, Kuroo Shinobu.
