Work Text:

He awoke at the sound of a loud bang. Something falling on the ground. He hated being woken up out of his own accord. It just reminded him of the past as a kid where he'd have to wake up to do gruelling tasks that were not meant for a young boy to be doing at all.

He groaned.

"Sorry, did I wake you Natsume?"

He opened his eyes to see his beautiful fiancée half-asleep at the foot of the bed scrambling to get back up.

"Clumsy as ever stupid Mikan", he said teasingly. "Where are you going?"

"Bathroom," she sleepily replied as she made it across Natsume's spacious room to the door that led to the bathroom.

"Also don't call me stupid, you fox!" she yelled before she shut the door.

Natsume couldn't help but smile to himself. Finally after four long years, he'd been reunited with the person he cherishes most. Everyday for the past four years he had awoken alone, yearning for someone that had no memory of him. Yet now, she was here and was his for all of eternity.

Last night had been a long night (and no, as much as Natsume had wanted it to be that way, it's not what you think). The night was long due to the overwhelming number of people that came to visit Mikan after hearing she arrived back at the academy. He got jealous at the thought of it, but shrugged it off because if it wasn't for all the friendships she made and the people she loved, she wouldn't be who she was today. The people important to Mikan have somehow become important to him too.

To protect her smile , Natsume thought. That's all I need to do

The door creaked open and in walked a smiling Mikan. She had stayed the night over at his room after passing out in the dorm's living room couch late at night, while greeting people. Since it was her first night back, the school hadn't made proper arrangements for her rooming situation, and allowed her to bunk with Natsume for a bit while they figured things out. He wasn't complaining though, the nights together would help make up for lost time from the four years they haven't been together.

"...Natsume?" said a confused voice from beside him.

He blinked and turned to his side where she had appeared sitting next to him on the bed. He still couldn't get over how beautiful she looked. While her features didn't change much from when they were younger, she had this new more mature air around her (maybe because they both were now high school students instead of elementary school kids, but he was still enchanted nonetheless). Her brown hair, which had always been in two pigtails when they were younger, was now let down and her bangs parted differently. But when she smiled, it was still the same - as bright as the sunshine in a dark room.

"Did you hear me Natsume? Today's an off day isn't it? Let's go to town today and get some Howalon! I haven't eaten it in forever!" cheered an excited Mikan. "Hurry up and get out of bed so we can ah-"

Mikan got cut off by a hand bringing her back down to the bed.

"Stay here with me a bit longer," Natsume said, holding her close to his chest. "Besides, if we go out there more and more people will come see you and I won't get to have you to myself."

His heart was beating fast. He was sure Mikan could hear it, but it didn't matter. He wanted to make sure she truly knew how he felt about her.

"I love you," said a soft whisper from his chest.

Natsume's eyes widened, he looked down to see his sunshine, red-faced, blushing furiously and looking away.

"Don't look at me," she whined while pushing him away. "I know it's been four years and I lost my memories during that time, but my feelings for you have never changed. Don't you know I'm yours? I've always been yours, so don't get jealous of other people. I've loved you for this long and it's never going to change. Forever."

Natsume lay there. Dumfounded. This girl was really something. After all these years, she was still able to stir something up inside him, just by saying a few words. This was the girl he loved.

"Good, so you didn't forget our promise," Natsume smiled as he pulled Mikan closer with no resistance. "Me too Mikan, I love you. From now until forever, more than anyone else."

He cupped her face with his hands and leaned down to kiss her. After four years, they were finally together and he was never going to let her go again.

Notes:

Hiii thank you so much for reading my first public posted story! It's just something that came to me while re-reading my favourite series of all time so I hope you enjoyed! For real, my love for these two is exponential, so I really hope I was able to portray their feelings well in this short one shot. Thank you again! :)
