Work Text:
Soft shuffling noises broke Sakusa out of his concentration, eyes lifting from his book to land on the baby monitor next to his chair. He listened for a few moments longer - more shuffling and a few sniffles- before marking his page and standing.
In the room down the hall Atsumu was sitting up in his bed, stuffed fox clutched protectively to his side and one hand rubbing sleep from his eyes. Sakusa watched fondly from the doorway as Atsumu spoke softly to his fox about his nap, eyes fluttering closed every few seconds before blinking furiously to stay open. He hadn’t noticed his caregiver yet.
“Did you have a good nap?” Sakusa murmured softly after a minute or so of watching Atsumu fight sleep, smiling when the blonde jerked in surprise and snapped to attention.
“Papa!” Atsumu beamed, holding out the arm that didn’t hold his fox. Sakusa walked forward and lifted Atsumu to his chest, the blonde’s legs circling tightly around his waist. “Mhm. Good nap.”
Sakusa smiled into his hair, pressing a light kiss to the side of his head as he carried him to the changing table. “I heard. Did you really dream about robots?”
Atsumu, ever excited to be distracted from getting changed, babbled on about his dream of volleyball-playing robots and how “our team still beat them, Papa, ‘cause we’re the best!” while Sakusa wrapped him in a fresh diaper and a new pair of sweatpants.
“That sounds like a wonderful dream,” Sakusa agreed as he lifted Atsumu back into his arms, hugging him to his chest for a moment. Atsumu hummed and held on just as tightly, his fox squished between their chests. “Are you hungry? What would you like to do today?”
Atsumu shook his head and tucked his nose into Sakusa’s neck. “No hungry. Wanna be with Papa.”
“Papa was just being lazy, I’m afraid,” Sakusa murmured back, turning and making his way back down the hallway to the living room. “Are you sure you want to sit with Papa while he reads?”
Atsumu hummed an affirmative into his neck and tightened his arms around his caregiver’s neck to prove his point. Sakusa laughed softly and sat back down in his chair, adjusting Atsumu as he did so.
Atsumu loved to sit on people’s laps. It was almost second nature for him to readjust his legs, shuffling into a more comfortable position and gently tugging his fox free before settling against Sakusa’s chest once more. He squished his cheek onto his caregiver’s shoulder and dropped his arms to wrap loosely around his waist instead.
He had only just woken up from his nap but Sakusa felt him droop less than a minute later, boneless and soft in his arms. Sakusa smiled and carefully picked up his book once more. He could let him sleep a little longer.
