See Me Fall

Work Text:

The fight was getting to be too much. Lucifer had underestimated the crazed determination of Oblivion. Several of his friends were injured and they were surrounded. To make matters worse he could hear the sound of police sirens getting closer.
“Retreat,” yelled Lucifer hoping to be heard over the chaos.
Everyone stopped in their tracks as they realized the police were coming. Then the panic set in; most of the dogs on both sides of the fight were pitbulls and pitbull mixes. The only reason most had chosen to fight was the belief that in their side winning they would be safe from death due to the pitbull ban. A few resumed fighting even more fiercely then before causing more dogs to fall down dead or in excruciating pain but most ran for the hills believing that if they stayed the end would be near for them.
“Cowards, I do not fear the foolishness of men,” Oblivion yelled, her voice filled with rage which could be seen on her skull of a face.
Yet only a few of her followers that had started running decided to stay, their fear of men outweighing their fear of her. She then jumped down from the rock to kill those that had dared to run. Lucifer stared in shock as he waited for his friends and allies to retreat. Oblivion was gaining on his oldest friend and though General Cloud seemed to be trying to shake her, Lucifer quickly realized he was really just trying to buy them time. Time seemed to slow as Oblivion jumped on his back, her claws looking like red hot irons.
“Behold the great hero shown for the weak idiot he is,” Oblivion said as Cloud seemed to accept his fate.
Lucifer was frozen as he heard the dying screams of the only one of his friends who always knew what to do when all seemed lost. He thought back at all Cloud had done for him and how he would always try to relieve everyone’s worry about him by saying my name is General Cloud and I didn’t get that name for nothing. He was then snapped back to reality with a light tap on his back.
“Everyone has left this park but you it’s time time to go,” Butch, the police dog, said tears filling up his eyes as well when he noticed Cloud’s battered charred corpse among the bodies, “I’ll lead you out of the park if you want.”
That was when the rain started. It seemed as though the heavens themselves were mourning. Lucifer was quite the shock of Cloud’s death still there causing him to not even want to catch up with Butch who had protected Lucifer and his family for as long as he had known Butch.
“I will come over to pick up after the cops leave for Cloud’s burial. He was a very brave dog who got a hero’s death. He will be well remembered by those whose lives he affected,” Butch said chocking up as he left the alleyway.
The burial was a large but silent affair. Most of the dogs had seen more death then any dog should see yet seeing Cloud’s dead body seemed to affect them more than anything. Everyone was in tears as the hole was covered back over in dirt. Some of the more sentimental dogs then started placing flowers on the grave, one’s that Lucifer knew meant more than even some of the dogs themselves realized. The grave was left covered in marigolds from old dog fighting dogs, a couple yellow roses from some police dogs, and a single daffodil from Butch.
