To Take A Fall

Work Text:

The door of the pound creaks open causing the room to erupt into an explosion of noise. A woman walks sadly in with an extremely quiet cream pitbull close behind her wearing a similarly sad expression. As the dog is put in the kennel it stays quiet just lying down in a dejected heap. The woman leaves turning off the kennel lights for the night as her sobs can be heard from just beyond the door.
“What’s your name, sport,” asked a cane corso after the noise had died down.
“Lucifer, not that it matters now. I’m finished, no ones going to bail me out. I’m a dead man,” was the pitbull depressing answer.
“Yeah the ban has been hard on everyone, even the humans, but you're Lucifer the great escape artist. If anyone can make it out of here it’s you,” the cane corso said hopefully “Names Hercules by the way.”
“You're as doomed as me. I can see that paper on your kennel door. It means they think you're a pitbull or at least have some pitbull in your family tree,” Lucifer interjected, frustrated with the rotten hand he’d been dealt.
“That can’t be right. I’m a cane corso. My owners have papers saying so and everything. You must be mistaken. I have to go back home. I have a job to do, you know. I protect their chickens from foxes and the like,” stammered Hercules in shock.
“No I’m not mistaken I heard what that paper means from a police dog you might know, Butch. Hercules your days are as numbered as mine,” Lucifer replied solemnly.
“Butch told you that. Well then it must be true every dog in this city knows he prides himself on telling the truth. He is as noble as other german shepherds only pretended to be,” said Hercules in defeat.
“Listen, I just noticed that my kennel door wasn’t closed all the way. I can get you and the others with that paper out of here,” Lucifer said cheerfully.
With that Lucifer nudged his kennel open with his snot and got to work opening the kennels. He had some experience in this from helping dog fit dogs escape their owners.
“You guys go to the door to my right that leads straight to the alley when you get there run towards the edge of the city and don’t stop until you are completely exhausted,” Lucifer commanded triumphantly.
“What about you,” asked Hercules, concerned for Lucifer.
“I will stay here and keep watch until the last dog leaves,” Lucifer said with a stern look on his face.
“Okay you heard him, let's move out,” yelled Hercules.
With that all the dogs started running out all except Lucifer and as the last few dogs were running out the door another one opened. In walked a grumpy man who clearly didn’t want to be there. Seeing the stream of dogs escaping the pound he called in backup and tried to catch as many dogs as he could. Lucifer tries warning him off with a half hearted growl but in vain as he is captured as all other dogs escape. As he is but back in the kennel the man changes the writing on the paper on the door of the kennel.
