Chapter Text
Suga was scared. He knew how Oikawa was. He never asks for help until he’s drowning. Suga saw how it hurt him in the past. And now with his new roommate, Suga couldn’t just pretend he didn’t have this doubt in his mind.
Suga bit his nails nervously as he did when something was bothering him. He always wore his heart on his sleeve, and today was no different. Daichi was already in the dorm when he arrived. “Suga, your back soon, did something-“ He looked at Suga, who’s mind was elsewhere. He could immediately tell that something was wrong. “Suga?” He walked up and put his hands on the smaller man’s shoulders. “Hey, what’s wrong?”
The gray haired male immediately leaned his weight on Daichi and put his arms around his roommate's waist, trying to steady himself. “It’s Oikawa. I’m worried, Daichi.” He put his head on Daichi’s chest. “I don’t want freshman year to repeat itself.” Suga had often confided in Daichi when Oikawa was in his last toxic relationship. When they were all first years, Oikawa got put in a dorm room with an upperclassman. He was confused about his sexuality at that time and thought experimenting would help. But his roommate ended up being a terrible choice for that and would often physically and emotionally abuse Oikawa. He was finally able to get out of that situation with the help of Suga, his best friend. But after seeing what Oikawa’s new roommate did to him, Suga was scared he was falling back into old patterns.
Daichi reciprocated the hug, putting his arms around Suga’s shoulders. “What happened?” He asked, concerned.
Suga sniffled, trying to calm down. He hated to see Oikawa get hurt again. “It’s his roommate. I’m scared. I don’t want-“ tears welled in his eyes and he clung tighter to Daichi. “I don’t want to see him get hurt again. I told you what happened during our first year.” His tears stained Daichi's shirt. It wasn’t strange for him to cry, Daichi comforted him through his emotions many times.
“Come sit down Koushi, can you tell me exactly what happened?” Daichi held Suga’s hand as he led him to the couch in their suite. They shared it with three other guys, but none of the others were home right now. Suites were more common in the Kurasuno dorm, where they lived, than in any other dorms on campus. Without dropping his hand, Daichi sat next to Suga and put his other hand on his back to comfort him. “Whenever you’re ready.” He gave Suga’s hand an encouraging squeeze.
“Okay.” Suga took a deep breath. “I- I was supposed to meet Tooru for drinks but when I got there a dark haired man opened the door. At first I thought I was at the wrong dorm but then I heard Oikawa and realized that must have been his new roommate.” Suga paused to catch his breath. His foot anxiously tapped the ground as he tried to stop from crying. “And- and then-” Suga leaned his head into his hands. He usually wasn’t much of an anxious person, but occasionally when things get to be too much he breaks down.
Daichi cautiously rubbed along Suga’s back, making him feel safe. “Hey, just breathe. Everything will be fine, Suga.” Daich paused for a moment, the sound of Suga’s stressed breathing filled the air. “Suga.”
Suga didn’t respond, he was too overwhelmed with worry for his friend. He never wanted Oikawa to get hurt. “I- I’m sorry. I just…” Suga’s tears ran down his hands. “I- I-”
“You don’t need to apologize. Take your time.” Daichi waited patiently for Suga to regain his composure.
“O- okay.” Suga lifted his head from his hands and stared off into space. “Um, so when I went in… I- I saw glass on the floor, some blood was stuck on the pieces.” He wiped his cheek. “But the worst part was when I saw Oikawa. He was covered in cuts and bandages. There’s no way he could have gotten all those from tripping or dropping something. Not to mention that the glass was more than just a vase, I think it was from their table. But I don’t know how he could accidentally break a table. Plus when I asked what happened he pointed to his roommate.” Suga looked at Daichi's concerned face. “He tried to tell me he was fine, he just needed a rain check but I don’t think I can believe that. It’s all too… familiar.” Suga leaned into Daichi. “I’m just worried.”
Daichi stroked Suga’s hair. “Hey, try not to worry. He told you about his situation last time. He would tell you if he was in danger, wouldn’t he?”
Suga rubbed his eye. “Maybe… It took him two months though. And it wasn’t until I asked him multiple times about the bruises. He was suffering silently and without realizing anything was really wrong. What do I do, Daichi?”
Daichi dropped Suga’s hand, to pull him in closer, wrapping him in another hug. “I think you should leave it alone for now. But if you get the feeling that the relationship is toxic again, then you bring it up to Oikawa. If you still have a bad feel after talking to him, come find me. I’ll go with you to the student life offices to file a report with you.”
Suga looked up at Daichi, smiling. “Really?” Daichi nodded. It would be difficult but Suga could try to not worry about it. “Thank you.” He stayed in Daichi’s arms, slowly growing tired from his emotional day.
“Hey Suga?”
“Mmm yea Daichi?” He said, half asleep.
“Do you… like Oikawa?”
His eyes popped open. “W- what- what do you-“
Daichi cleared his throat. “It’s just… the way you worry about him… I can't help but feel like…”
Suga racked through his brain. All the late nights spent at Oikawa’s, drunk and happy. All the times he cared for Oikawa when he was at his lowest. All the memories. Did he like Oikawa? Shit. He thinks he knows the answer to that. How could he be so stupid? How could he not realize this sooner? “I- I’m not-“ He closed his eyes again and listened to Daichi’s heartbeat against his head. “Maybe…” Oikawa was his best friend, had he really liked him all this time? “Okay… yes. Wait, no. Maybe? I don’t know, I’m not good at these things, Daichi.”
Daichi chuckled softly in agreement. “Neither am I.” Daichi rested his chin on Suga’s head. “But I’m here for you, you know. If you ever need to… talk about it or anything.” Suga smiled, he really did have the best roommate he could ask for. Slowly Suga began to allow himself to drift off to sleep.
