The morning light of the crisp late September air filtered into Yugi’s room, reflecting off the motes. He woke slowly, turning over. A glint came off Kazuko’s pink silk scarf and Yugi smiled softly. She was still here. He wondered what she could be dreaming of. While he did need to get up, he felt no real desire to move and risk jostling her awake. It was, after all, her birthday. After a moment, he moved to grab a pillow, carefully getting out of the bed. Her arms wrapped around the pillow easily, snuggling in with a soft hum and he let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.
He snuck out of the room, heading to the kitchen to start breakfast. Yugi had been hoping she’d stay asleep but he should’ve known better. She entered the kitchen as he was finishing frying up some eggs with a yawn, stretching out her arms. “Morning,” he said with a soft grin, gesturing to the coffee cup on the counter. “And happy birthday. I made your coffee the way you like it.”
She rubbed her eyes, a small grin on her face. “You’re too nice to me,” she said softly as she picked up the coffee, taking a deep inhale. “Oh, this smells strong.”
“Just like you,” Yugi teased as he plated the eggs and picked up both plates. He carried them both to the table, setting them down. “You know, my mom is going to wonder how you keep getting here so early in the morning.”
“Are you saying you’d prefer that I stop sneaking in at night?” She’d taken a spot at the table and was unpinning her scarf from her hair. Yugi glanced over her, noting that she’d changed from her pajamas into a short pink plaid skirt and a black tank top already. “I thought you liked me being here.”
“I do like you being here,” he said as he sat across from her. “Just was wondering… if maybe we should get our own place.” He looked away from her, nervous about her reaction. “Maybe we could go look at places today, even.”
Kazuko laughed. “With what money?” She took a long sip of her coffee and gave a soft sigh of happiness. “It’d be nice, though. Not having to sneak in, getting to be real adults…”
“Well,” Yugi said slowly, feeling almost giddy he could give her this. “What if I told you I’d been saving money just for this?”
Her cup froze halfway to her lips. For a second, Yugi saw every possible reaction she could have. She could get angry that he’d been presumptuous to think they’d move in together before marriage. He could have overstepped. Slowly, a smile spread across her features. “Really?” He nodded an affirmative as Kazuko set her cup down… and suddenly she was in his lap. “Our own place! That’s so romantic!” She pressed a kiss to his cheek. “Oh, this is the best birthday present ever!”
“Awesome,” he said, pressing a gentle kiss right to her cheek. “So you wouldn’t mind spending your birthday looking at places to live?”
“Was there ever any question?”
