Work Text:

The Distraction

Laura and her twin brother, Derek, competed against each other for everything - the last piece of pie, the best seat on movie night, status as the smartest person in school. And now, it’s their senior year, and there’s so much more to compete for.

Both wanted to be the valedictorian of their graduating class, both wanted a coveted spot at Stanford, and both wanted the most scholarships.

Laura knew Derek had an edge on her. And that was math. He had always been better at math. So when their final semester came around, and they were both in AP Statistics, Laura knew that she needed an edge over Derek to beat him.

That edge, she was soon to discover, was a transfer student by the name of Stiles Stilinski.

He was exactly Derek’s type - bright amber eyes, beauty-marked face, slender, but definitely muscular under those baggy t-shirts and flannels. He was the perfect person to distract him from his studies.

So at lunch on the first day, Laura bypassed her usual seat at the popular table to sit with Stilinski, who looked utterly lost and a little scared to have Laura seated in front of him.

“Uh, can I help you?” He asked, eyeing her suspiciously.

“You’re cute.”

“Well thanks -“

“Laura.”

“Thanks, Laura. But you’re not exactly my type.”

“Oh?” Laura grinned. “What is your type?”

“Little less boobs, little more dick.”

Laura threw her head back and laughed. “You’re perfect.”

Stiles raised his eyebrows, “perfect?”

“My twin brother, Derek. You’re his type and I think he could use a little fun in his life. He’s so uptight.”

“Your brother?”

Laura pointed over towards her usual table where Derek sat with their friends. “The dark-haired one between the redhead and the blonde douche. That’s Derek.”

Stiles sat with his mouth agape for a moment before responding. “And you think I have a chance with him ? Seriously?”

“Trust me, Stiles, I know my brother. Now come on, sit with us. I promise - we’ll be nice.”

She picked up Stiles’ lunch tray and traipsed to the other table, leaving him to sputter indignantly and scramble after her.

As soon as he sat down beside her, directly in front of Derek, she saw Derek take one look at him, his eyes lit up, and she knew her job here was done.

At the end of the year, neither Derek nor Laura were valedictorian - they lost by a tenth of a point to one Stiles Stilinski. They managed to tie for salutatorian, though. But Laura, she wasn’t too torn up about it. For one, Derek technically didn’t beat her, and she got to watch Derek fall in love. Plus Stiles turned out to be a pretty awesome friend, and years later, brother-in-law.
