We Did It

Summary:

MeliMei conference? Yes.

Work Text:

Melissa inhaled and blinked back at the woman in the mirror. She put on mascara and lipstick for this momentous occasion, added a dash of pink blush.

Not too cakey, more professional, perfect for this meeting. She had her dress tailored specifically for her, a dark blue silk dress held together by a white ribbon that formed a ribbon in the back.

A darker blue shrug rested on her shoulders and ended at her elbows. Her hair was brushed and styled and her glasses were bedazzled with an indigo shaded frame.

“Right, only twenty more minutes,” she reminded herself and breathed in and out. Gosh, why was she so nervous? It’s not like the pitch would fail, they worked too hard for this to stop at a single ‘no’. Years of effort would be paid off once the company fully took off.

Melissa shook herself out of her daze and rolled her neck. Great, she was ready, she memorized her flashcards, now all she needed was her girlfriend.
Mei jumped out from behind her, excitement glowing on her face.

She launched herself into Melissa’s arms and spun her around. Melissa laughed in surprise and set her down, anxiety seeming to melt away with just her touch. Mei was ecstatic, clearly, she bounced on the balls of her feet and fiddled with the hem of her sleeve.

Melissa’s tailor was tasked to give Hatsume an outfit too, much to the pink haired woman’s dismay. She traded her sweatpants and oil stained tank top for a rose colored suit, maroon cuffed sleeves and decorated with golden pins. She refused to take the goggles off, obviously. Melissa liked her any way she dressed, fancy or not. It was still Mei.

“You look so good!” Melissa exclaimed. Hatsume clasped her hands together as she examined Melissa up and down.

“Not too shabby, yourself! I like the bow,” she commented, mind clearly elsewhere. Melissa smiled.

“Thank you.” She stepped closer to the smaller girl and gave her a slightly worried look. How is she not terrified? They have their careers on the line, the hopes they’ve built together could be destroyed with a word. Yet she’s happy, beaming like a kid who just received a gift.

“Are you...scared?” Melissa asked timidly. Hatsume tilted her head, still smiling.

“Why would I be scared?” She answered honestly. Melissa noticed her tie under her suit was crooked and reached out to fix it.

“I mean, it’s our company, Mei, everything we’ve made the past seven years. We could lose it, how do you stay so happy?” She retracted her hands and chewed on the inside of her cheek. Mei only shrugged sheepishly.

“I am nervous,” she admitted. “Really nervous. But not scared.” Melissa was still flabbergasted- what did she mean? She must’ve noticed her face because she struggled for a second to find words.

“I guess I just think that we’ll be okay if we don’t get it. Our baby is still ours, even if someone else doesn’t like it. We can keep trying, so I’m not too worried! And I have my girlfriend by my side!” She added the last part with a gentle nudge of her elbow. Melissa wasn’t too convinced, her nerves were still shot and her mind still whirred.

“I’m not scared we’ll lose anything, because I’ll still have you. And if I have you, everything is still the same. Our baby will come back stronger!” Hatsume intertwined their fingers together and stepped on her tippy toes to match Melissa’s height.

“We’re gonna be okay.” She assured her. The blonde woman traced over her words, glancing back at the door obscuring their view of the public and the critics. But she wasn’t there yet, she had Mei with her. She was here, she was okay.

“We’re on in three minutes, wanna go in early?” Mei asked eagerly. Melissa chuckled and squeezed her hands.

“Sure.” She said. The pair opened the door, awaited by a group of executives and paparazzi.
---
They both screamed with laughter as soon as the door closed, ditching their heels and smiling so hard their faces hurt. Mei scooped Melissa up bridal style and spun her around causing the American girl to squeak and burst into another fit of snickering.

Adrenaline rushed through her veins and pride bloomed in her chest. They did it, they did it.
Hatsume set her girlfriend down and jumped around erratically, rambling and yelling ideas out loud.
“This is perfect, we can create all the babies we want. Oh just imagine the tech, Mel! We could get all the fancy stuff and the high functioning designs! The heroes will be begging us for our items, this is-!” She fumbled over her words and paced around the room.

Melissa was too flabbergasted to speak, her eyes were sore and her voice hoarse from squealing and talking to the public.

“We did it,” she whispered. Hatsume kept on talking, ideas flying around and then interrupting those same plans with another idea. Melissa squished Mei’s cheeks and pulled her close.

“We got our company!” She exclaimed. Hatsume nodded rapidly and squished Melissa’s cheeks back.

“I know!” She yelled back, just as energetic.
All the fear she had three hours ago in that waiting room was gone, replaced with joy and happiness. So much of it she might explode, they earned this. And as if she jinxed it, questions popped in her mind. Her eyes widened and she bumped her nose with her girlfriend’s.

“What do we do now?” She wondered seriously. Mei’s expression turned to that of solemness.

“Sleep.” She deadpanned.

“Good idea. She replied.
