Chapter Text
You’d been friends with Zari since the two of you could remember, you were her first, and only, real friend. You were even friends before the whole “dragon girl” thing. And you stuck with her, because, in all honesty, you cared for her. You never liked the fame, but as Zari got older she started to love it more and more, she let it take over her life. You remember when she first really became an “influencer,” she would invite you over to hang out, and then she’d be too busy to actually hang out with you, or she would fall asleep. You never held it against her, you knew the fame was exhausting to her, so you would tuck her into bed or lay a blanket over her, and go ask her parents for a ride home. This was high school, and you didn’t have a car, so Zari’s parents would usually give you a sad smile and drive you home.
But there’s one night this happened that sticks in your mind. Zari fell asleep on you, but this time it was a little later than usual, around 10pm. And yes, that was late for Zari, you were used to her falling asleep at 8pm.
You went out to the livingroom to see if Zari’s parents were still up, you sighed when you saw that they weren’t. Hearing a noise coming from the kitchen, you walked over to see who was up, to find Behrad raiding the fridge.
You walked over and leaned against the counter, “Hey.”
Behrad looked like a deer caught in headlights, arms full of random snacks. But he relaxed when he saw it was you, “Oh, hey. You scared me,” he said, bringing a hand to where his heart would be if there weren’t chips in his arms.
You grinned at him, and he put the food on the counter. “Zari fall asleep on you again?”
You shrugged in reply. Behrad leant to the side to see what time it was, “10? damn, that’s gotta be a record,” he chuckled.
“Yeah, her best was 9:45, and that was only because we were watching Constantine.”
“With Keanu?”
“Yeah, she’s a sucker for Keanu,” you laughed.
The room suddenly got quiet, the two of you becoming awkward.
Behrad cleared his throat. “Well- uh, mom and dad already went in… uh… do you… want me to drive you home…?”
You thought about this, honestly your house was a little too far to walk to, especially in the dark. “Yeah, that would be great… if you’re not too busy,” you say, raising an eyebrow and gesturing to the pile of food.
Behrad looked at the food, “Oh.. Uh, no, it’s fine! This can wait,” and you laughed together.
That was the first time you had actually talked to Behrad, and after that it became a little more of a habit, when Zari fell asleep, like usual, Behrad would conveniently be in the living room when you came asking for a drive, and he would offer to take you. You didn’t mind, Behrad reminded you of how Zari used to be before she commited full time to the whole fame thing. It got to the point where you stopped asking their parents, and you would head straight to Behrads room to ask for a drive. Behrad had started to become a closer friend than Zari. When she was too busy or after she fell asleep, you and Behrad would go play video games or watch a movie. That’s why, when he left for “business school” you didn’t buy it for a second. When you confronted him about it though, he never told you where he was actually going, but assured you that he wasn’t doing anything bad, and you trusted him.
Which brings us to now.
You’re walking down the streets of Seattle, it’s the middle of the day, and you see a furry creature run past you. In all honesty, it’s not the weirdest thing you’ve seen, so you keep walking, then someone bumps into you, knocking you down.
“Oh, shit! I’m so sorry,” the guy hurriedly helps you up as a few other people run past you.
You smile, “It’s alright, it happens.”
“Cool, yeah,” he smiles awkwardly. tall, brown hair, he’s handsome, you think.
“Don’t you have somewhere to be? You were in quite the rush,” you prod.
“well…” he smirks, “I–”
“NATE!” a familiar voice yells, the guy looks over your shoulder and you look too.
“What?” the guy says annoyed.
“Behrad?” You haven’t seen him in a while, and it’s odd that he’d be home and not tell you.
“Y/N! Hey!” Behrad runs up to you, “What are you doing here?”
“In Seattle? Where I live?” you give him an amused look.
“Right, yeah,” he smiles bashfully.
“What the hell are you two doing? There’s a FREAKING werewolf on the loose!” you look around Behrad to see a short blonde lady. You smile and wave.
“You’ve gotta be kidding me,” she says, rolling her eyes and popping her hip while crossing her arms. “You can flirt later!”
You laugh, “This your boss?” you ask Behrad with a smirk on your face.
He rolls his eyes, “Yes.”
“Then get to work! You heard the lady! Wait– did you say werewolf? Like a real werewolf?” you turn to the blonde.
“Yes.”
You make an incredulous face, but nonetheless suggest, “Try behind Baxters Eatery a couple blocks that way, they throw out soo much food,” the three people look at you, surprised, “what? I imagine they’re hungry!” you shrug. “See ya later, B, let me know if you stop by your parents?”
“Yeah, I will!” with that you shoot a wave to the trio and turn to leave.
✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰
“You know where Baxters is?” Sara asks Behrad.
“Uh, yeah, follow me,” Behrad snaps out of his stupor and leads the way.
“So, that was Y/N?” Nate asks falling into pace with Behrad, “cuz I totally get it.”
“Get what?” Behrad asks. Sara rolls her eyes from behind them.
“Why you’re obsessed with them,” Nate smirks.
Behrad scoffs, “Whatever, it’s just down here.”
The three slow down as they reach the alleyway that leads behind the eatery. As they get closer they hear thrashing and things being thrown.
“They were right,” Nate whispers surprisingly.
Behrad shoots him a glare, as Sara steps forward to capture the loose creature.
✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰
“I’m gonna go see my parents and Zari for dinner,” Behrad announces walking into the flight deck. He takes out his phone to send a text.
“Ouh! Can I come?” Nate jumps up.
“No,” Behrad says, face serious.
“Is Y/N gonna be there?” he says in a suggestive voice.
“I don’t know.”
“Didn’t you say that your parents were getting suspicions about the whole ‘business school’ thing, maybe you should take Nate and say he’s your professor or peer or something,” Sara butts in. Ava opens her mouth to object but Sara shoots her a glare.
Sara and Nate smile at Behrad hopefully, “Fine, but don’t.. do anything…” he turns back to his phone.
Sara pulls Nate to the side, “I need you to talk to Y/N, I want them to join the Legends, I did some digging on them and they could be really helpful to the team.”
“And helpful to Behrad,” Nate winks. Sara slaps him lightly in return.
“You saw what they did today, we need that, okay?”
“Ok, ok,” Nate says, raising his hands in surrender, “I’m on it.”
“Thank you.”
“LETS GO!” Behrad yells, annoyed, opening the portal to his house.
You’re already there when they arrive, and you raise an eyebrow at the sight of Behrad’s friend. He gives you a look that says Don’t talk about it, so you don’t say anything. Behrad hugs his parents, “Maman,Buba, this is one of my professors, Dr. Nathaniel Heywood,” Behrad introduces. The man shakes the hands of Behrads parents while Behrad walks to give you a hug, “Hey,” he says, embracing you.
“I’m glad you made it,” you pull back and smile at him.
“Ahem.” you turn your head to see the guy from earlier standing there standing there.
“Y/N, this is Nathaniel Heywood, Dr. Heywood, this is Y/N,” Behrad introduces.
“Oh please, call me Nate,” he says, grabbing your hand and kissing it. You try to hold in your laugh but mostly fail. Behrad grins a little with you.
“Yes, nice to meet you,” you bow dramatically.
“Behrad! You didn’t say you were coming to dinner!” Zari finally makes her appearance, hugging Behrad and giving him cheek kisses.
“Sorry Z, it was a last minute thing,” he smiles.
“Mhmm,” Zari says, looking at you. You shoot her a look that says shut up right now and she smirks.
Nate clears his throat again, you all look to see him completely enthralled with Zari, you raise an eyebrow at Behrad, he gives you an equally surprised look, “Zari, this is one of my professors, Dr. Nathaniel Heywood.”
“Professor, yeah, okay,” Zari says, giving him a once over. You swallow a laugh and hear Mrs. Tarazi say that dinner was ready.
✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰ ✰
These family dinners were usually awkward, but with Nate there is was like a hundred times worse, and it was at its very worst when Mrs. Tarazi started talking to Nate.
“So… Dr. Heywood…” she started.
“Please, Nate is fine,” he interrupted.
“Yes, ok, Nate… are you married?”
You, Behrad, Mr. Tarazi and Zari, barely raised an eyebrow at this, Mrs. Tarazi is a famous want-to-be-matchmaker. But Nate seemed taken aback.
“Uh- uh no, no,” he said, straightening up.
“Are you dating anyone?” She continued her interrogation.
“Nope,” he smiled.
“Good, because, you know, Y/N here is single, and they’ve been friends with Zari since a young age, I’ve watched them grow into such a wonderful person. I’m sure you’ll be a great fit!” Your eyes widened at the sound of your name, never did you expect her to call on you, at the same time while you were trying to process what was happening, Behrad choked on a piece of his food, prompting his father to pat him on the back, you and his parents looked at him worriedly, “I’m okay, I’m okay,” Behrad assured, taking a long gulp of water. You slowly turned to look at Zari who you could tell was hiding a smirk.
“Thank you, Mrs. Tarazi, and I don’t doubt you’re right, but I’m not looking for anyone right now,” Nate replied politely.
“Oh,” the woman replied with a disappointed look on her face, she turned to you and gave you a pitiful look. You shot her a tight lipped smile.
The rest of the meal went just as awkwardly. And at the end of it, Mrs. Tarazi volunteered Behrad and his father to do the dishes. Which was apparently part two of her matchmaking plan, as after she ushered you, Nate, and Zari into the living room, she immediately “remembered” to get Zari’s opinion on something and dragged her out of the room.
“So… you’re not actually a professor, right?” you inquire from your spot on the couch.
“Um, no, but I was a historian, am a historian, I have a PhD, you know?” he answers, walking around the room, inspecting it.
“Mhm.”
Suddenly he snaps back to, “but that’s not why I’m here, I mean, I’m not just here to play Behrad’s professor,” he says, sitting down next to you.
“Oh yeah? What’s the other reason?” you say, seemingly interested.
“I’m here to recruit you. To the Legends.”
“I’m sorry?”
“The Legends, wait– has Behrad not told you?”
“No…” your brows furrowed in confusion and a bit of disappointment.
“Y/N… We’re time travellers, we protect the timeline, make sure no bad things happen, and you, you’re bright, we need a smart thinker on our team.”
“Didn’t you just say you had a PhD?”
“Yeah, but in history, not… creative thinking!”
“I’ve gotta talk to Behrad about this, does he know you’re recruiting me?”
“No… he doesn’t, we figured he wouldn’t let us… just… don’t freak out at him, if you don’t want to join, that’s fine I guess, but don’t ruin your friendship over this.”
You sat there for a second, before nodding and getting up.
Walking to the kitchen, you ran right into Behrad in the hall.
“Behrad, can we talk for a minute?”
“Actually, I should probably get going,” he says, trying to get around you.
“You have plenty of time, you and I both know that now,” you said, crossing your arms and blocking his path.
Behrad gapes at you.
“Nate told me about your job. And he tried to recruit me.”
“What? No, Y/N you can’t, this job is dangerous.”
“I know, I know, but maybe I could at least see what you do?”
Behrad sighs.
“Oh, c’mon, it sounds fun!” you smile brightly up at him.
“Fine, c’mon,” he drags you into the living room to get Nate.
