Work Text:
Eddie had to take an extra shift, which meant there would be no one to watch Christopher.
Luckily, Buck had offered.
Now that the shift is over, Eddie is more than relieved to go home. And to see his boys that he’s missed so much.
A bunch of things have changed since Eddie broke up with Ana and Buck ended it with Taylor. They haven’t been able to talk about it because both of them are too scared to take the first step since they think the other doesn’t feel the same way.
But they can feel it. It’s there.
Someone just needs to take the first step.
Eddie turns the doorknob and walks in, exhaling deeply. Sure, it was only a twelve hour shift, but it’s still exhausting and it went by slower since he didn’t have it with Buck. Buck always seems to make the time go by faster for Eddie.
“Buck? Chris? I’m home.” Eddie calls after slipping his shoes off. He walks into the living room where the television is playing quietly, Christopher’s cartoons on.
Eddie grabs the remote and turns it off before turning to walk down the hallway towards Christopher’s room, checking the bathroom on the way there. He finds no sight of Buck and frowns until he opens the bedroom door, his breath catching in his throat at the sight his eyes fall upon.
They’re laying on Christopher’s bed with a book in Buck’s hand. But it’s leaning over now since they seemed to have fallen asleep while reading it, Buck’s head leaned back against the headboard and Christopher’s under Buck’s arm.
The sight is beautiful. And Eddie feels his chest warming at the two of them.
Everyone was right. Christopher doesn’t need a mother because he already has two dad’s and they’re him and Buck. And that’s all Christopher needs. It’s something he’s finally realizing he’s happy with.
This. This is what Eddie wants for the rest of his life. He knows it now. And now that he does, he’s not going to back down and let it slip from his fingers.
Eddie enters the room and over to them, leaning down to lightly shake Buck’s shoulder. “Buck.”
Slowly, Buck blinks his eyes open, turning his head to meet Eddie’s. “Hey.”
“Hey.” Eddie responds softly and he knows he should wait, he knows that. But damnit, Buck looks so breathtaking like this and him holding Christopher is just making his heart pound like crazy so Eddie leans in and presses his lips to Buck’s.
Almost immediately, Buck leans into it as best as he can without waking the boy in his arms.
Eddie drags his thumb across Buck’s cheek and pulls away, both me exhaling deeply as they lean their foreheads against one another with their eyes still closed.
“What was that for?” Buck whispers. Eddie sighs. “I love you, Evan. So damn much and I want this for the rest of my life. I wanna come home to you and Chris like this. I wanna come home to you.” He confesses.
Buck nuzzles his nose against Eddie’s. “I love you too, Eds. And I want the same thing. You and Chris are everything to me.” He says.
“And you’re everything to us.” Eddie replies.
Buck smiles, pecking his lips. “If I had known all I needed to do was fall asleep with Chris for us to take the next step, I would’ve done it a long time ago.” He teases. Eddie laughs quietly and Buck manages to quiet him by pressing another kiss to his lips.
“Come on,” Eddie whispers when he pulls back. “Come to bed. Let’s let him sleep.”
Buck lays Christopher’s head on the pillow, leaning down to kiss the top of it. Eddie copies his actions and Buck takes his hand, leading them out of the bedroom.
Eddie leaves the door cracked open, then turns to face Buck who pulls him by his hand towards Eddie’s bedroom where they go inside and straight to the bed.
“So, does this mean you’ll stay then? Maybe forever?” Eddie asks quietly. Buck walks up to him and takes his face in his hands. “I’ll stay for as long as you’ll have me, Eds. And if that’s forever, then I’ll stay forever. I love you, Eddie.” He says.
Eddie smiles, leaning into his touch. “Good. Because I do. I love you too.”
Buck leans in to kiss him and Eddie inhales deeply, knowing he’ll never get tired of this. He’ll never get tired of seeing Buck, of kissing him, of holding him. Because for him, Buck is it and Eddie’s happy with this.
They change into sleep clothes and fall into bed together, cuddled up in each other’s arms and yeah, this is forever.
