Who Died and Made You King?

Summary:

Merlin sings some Sara bareilles whilst doing dishes, not realising Arthur is around until he answers his question

Notes:

Written for Merlin Fluffalooza 2021!

Prompt: Sometime after Arthur returns, he and Merlin are doing the dishes or something domestic like that, and Merlin is singing some Sara Bareilles at the top of his lungs (because he totally would) and he sings the line "Who died and made you king of anything?" Arthur just stops, looks at him with a completely straight face and says, "My father." Laughter and fluff ensues.

Work Text:

Ever since Arthur had returned, he had been getting to see different parts of Merlin that he'd never been able to back in Camelot, and today it seemed no different. He had just returned from a long run, which took him through different parts of the city Merlin lived in, he had been exploring it for awhile now, hell he'd even found a few places to take Merlin to that the other man didn't know about, but even before he's opened the door he could hear Merlin's singing voice, something that had shocked him the first time he'd heard it.

Yes, Merlin hummed under his breath when he did chores back when he was his manservant, Arthur had stopped to listen to him many a time whenever he heard him, but very rarely had he sung and it felt like a privilege every time he heard it now. He opens the door as quietly as he can, knowing that if Merlin knew he was back he'd stop and go back to humming, though with how loud he was singing he doubted Merlin even knew what was going on around him, which he was going to take advantage of.

It made Arthur chuckle slightly as he put his coat and shoes away, before going to see what his friend was up to in order for him to get this carried away. He found the man in the kitchen, doing the dishes and dancing around the room as he went to put things away.

Arthur watched him for several seconds with a fond smile on his face, before listening to what was on "who died and made you the king of anything!" Merlin sang along, startling him slightly at the randomness of it, but Arthur couldn't resist the answer he was about to give, "My Father" he sing songs back, on the verge of full on laughter as Merlin startles and very nearly drops what he's holding, it's only due to his magic that the thing gets put away at all.

He quickly whirls around to face him, yet he doesn't look embaressed like usual. Hell he looks as amused as Arthur feels "you're not wrong" he says as he begins to giggle quietly, which soon turn into full on laughter that is far too infectious for Arthur's own good, so they end up holding one another up as bout after bout of laughter take over, until they can't breath and they end up on the floor until they calm down several minutes later.

Only for them to meet each others eyes and set each other off again, it isn't until Merlin manages to turn the music off that they calm down fully and pull each other into a hug before merlin drags him to the couch. This time he gets a full rendition of the song that he'd walked in on, and again he answers with "my father" and they end up in yet another laughing fit, started by the look on Merlin's face alone this time and Arthur can't help but shove him playfully.
