Work Text:
“Spy.”
Spy glances up from his newspaper. Engineer is standing before him, holding the smouldering remains of what was likely a time-consuming and expensive pet project of his.
Oh well. Not his problem.
Spy ashes his cigarette and turns his attention back to his newspaper. Scout will be happy to hear the Red Sox won yesterday.
“/Spy./”
Spy looks Engineer in the eyes, staring him down as he slowly turns the page, before looking down again.
“Damnit Spy, can you at least look at me while I’m trying to scold you?”
“Rest assured, I am listening.” Spy replies evenly, “Though I’ve done /nothing/ deserving of a reprimand as of late.”
“Ignoring the obvious lie,” Engineer huffs, “You broke into my workshop!”
“Recently can be relative.” Spy shrugs. “Considering you’re scolding me within my private quarters, you’ve broken into my room.”
“That’s /different./” Engineer seethes. “I haven’t broken in just to destroy your hard work!”
“Yet.” Spy tuts, raising his eyebrows. “Let us call it even, oui?”
“Are you at least gonna apologize-”
“Don’t be ridiculous, we are even. Of course not.”
Engineer inhales slowly, visibly on the verge of losing his temper. Spy can practically hear his teeth grinding.
Spy smirks.
Engineer glares at him for a long moment before he huffs, turning and storming out, the door slamming shut behind him. At least he had the common courtesy to close the door on his way out.
--
“Labourer!”
Spy slams open the door of Engineer’s workshop, panting heavily, his suit singed and smoking.
“Uh huh?”
Engineer hardly even looks up, tightening a screw on one of the smaller sensors that goes inside a dispenser. He’s been working on making dispensers not dispense to enemy spies, but he hasn’t had any luck thus far. It hasn’t helped that he’s kept forgetting to work on it, what, with the million other things he has to do around the base.
“What did you do?”
Spy stomps in, slamming the door shut behind himself as he dusts the remains of charred fabric off on Engineer’s floor, swearing under his breath with such violent intensity it’s almost impressive.
“I’ve been working all day, y’know, like /you/ should’ve been.”
Engineer looks up this time, pushing up his goggles to shoot Spy an unamused stare, before turning back to the sensor.
“Non! To my sapper!” Engineer is paying /entirely/ too little attention to his incredibly dire situation for his liking.
“What about it?” Engineer huffs, biting his tongue to stifle a smile.
“You broke it!” Spy holds up the completely and utterly /ruined/ device, unceremoniously dropping it on Engineer’s workbench, beside the pile of loose screws Engineer may or may not have removed from the device a few hours prior. “I don’t know how, but I /know/ you did!”
“You have no proof.”
Spy blanches, scowling as he realizes exactly why Engineer did this, his leather gloves creaking with how tightly he clenches his fists.
“I thought we were even!”
“Not with that attitude you had.”
Engineer can’t hold back his grin as Spy squirms beneath his glare. Serves him goddamn right.
