“Ben!”
“Hmm?” Ben looked up from putting his shoes on to see Sarah walking out from the kitchen.
“Did you finish the coffee without putting fresh on?”
Schooling his face into a look of— he hoped— indignant innocence, Ben suppressed the urge to swipe at his mouth in search of telltale coffee remnants. He knew he’d forgotten something. “No?”
“You’re unbelievable. Honestly.” Sarah rolled her eyes, lips tugging into a smirk.
Ben grinned back. “You’ll never pin it on me, copper,” he murmured, pulling Sarah into a smiling kiss. “You have no proof. Purely circumstantial evidence.”
“Changing career track, are we?” Sarah raised an eyebrow and tugged his shirt collar straight. “Should I be looking for you in the DA’s office next week instead?”
Ben shuddered. “Ugh. Don’t even joke about that—”
“Ready to go?” John interrupted, thumping down the stairs. “We have an early start over in— Oh, for… Really, Jones? Already?”
Ben blinked. “What?”
“Coffee-stained ties typically don’t inspire people’s confidence in their law-enforcement officers,” John said drily. Ben felt his ears burn as Sarah started laughing. “You couldn’t at least have made it to lunch before spilling something?”
“Maybe don’t quit your day job just yet, detective,” Sarah said, eyes twinkling mischievously. Ben, heading for the stairs to go grab another tie from the little stash of clean clothes he kept at the Barnabys’, yelped as Sarah swatted his arse on his way past. “And don’t think I’ll be so lenient about your coffee crimes next time.”
