Chapter Text
There’s this field Denki always goes to when he needs to clear his head.
It’s right outside the U.A. campus, not close enough to count as a part of the school but not too far away that it’s difficult to get there. When the dorm system was put in place during his first year, Denki thought he was never going to be able to go back again. Luckily, it isn’t too difficult to sneak out of the dorms, as he quickly discovered.
The field is pretty large, covered with thousands of yellow dandelions. None of them have bloomed yet but they will soon, leaving fluffy remnants in his clothes and hair. It's a comforting thought, Denki thinks.
Contrary to popular belief, Denki overthinks things a lot. Shocking, I know. That is part of the reason why he’s now currently laying down among those yellow weeds, staring up at the millions of stars so far out of reach.
Denki sighs deeply before plucking one of the many dandelions that laid near him. He squinted at it, inspecting it before placing it down beside him.
It’s well known that giving someone a dandelion is a symbol of your love for them, a confession of sorts. Giving someone a dandelion is a heartfelt and fragile thing, it isn’t given carelessly. Giving a dandelion as a joke is very frowned upon. Dandelions are only offered when your feelings for someone are so powerful and run so deep, that you can’t convey it into words. The only thing that can convey it is a dandelion.
Which kinda sucks if you don't like dandelions but that's not the point.
This is why Denki is here now. He bites his bottom lip, fidgeting with another dandelion while deep in thought. His fingers start to stain yellow from the golden bud.
There’s someone he wants to give the dandelion to, someone he cares about so much that the idea of fucking up their friendship is terrifying to him. She’s his best friend. She’s been friends with him since before the war, the two of them growing closer during that awful time. She's a constant in Denki's life, he doesn't want that to change.
Denki sat up and stretched. He remembers the feelings forming gradually over time. He tried to deny it as long as possible, but that obviously didn’t work. She’s constantly on his mind, to the point where it’s ‘all he talks about’ (according to Sero). Honestly he has no idea what he’d do without her.
Which is exactly why he’s so terrified of telling her.
The idea of changing something that has worked so well and possibly ruining everything is frightening to Denki. He doesn't like change. He prefers things to stick to the same pattern and not change abruptly. Doing this, confessing to her, is going to disrupt everything. He won't even know if it's worth it until the damage is done!
Denki plopped back down on his back again, crushing a couple of dandelions underneath him. He picked up his previously plucked flower and glared at it.
“Damn dandelions, sitting here all : ‘pick me! Give me to Kyoka because you love her!’, I get it already” Denki drawled mockingly at the yellow plant before throwing it out of his sight.
He sat in silence for a moment, half-expecting someone to reply to him before rolling his eyes and facing the stars again.
“All I have to do is give her the dandelion, it’s that easy” he tells himself. Upon saying this, anxious tendrils start to make his way towards his heart. This leaves him with a jittery feeling in his stomach that makes him kind of nauseous. Denki's hands felt clammy and he clenches his fists. If only it was easy to tell your best friend that you’re in love with her.
Suddenly Denki feels his side pocket vibrate, a dinging noise ringing out across the field. His eye twitches in annoyance as he realizes the reason for the blaring noise. He pulls out his phone, silencing the alarm that went off. It’s time to go back.
He stands up and dusts himself off, noting the sticky stains of yellow that were scattered across him. Denki's gaze lingered at the dandelions for a few moments before starting his walk back towards the school.
He’s made up his mind, he decided, humming as he walks. Denki will give Kyoka the dandelion tomorrow after school. He’ll come back here and pick one the second that the last class of the day ends. He’ll then go find her and give it to her! Simple.
He reaches the border wall and spots his tree. The tree is exactly in the perfect position where it's on the blind spot of the cameras. He hoists himself up the tree, maneuvering the branches and inching closer to the wall. One close enough, Denki carefully steps onto the wall, using the tiny natural footholds to climb down to the interior.
Denki slinks back to the dorms as quietly as he can, not bothering to stay out of any camera’s line of sight. He doesn't care if the cameras see him, he just doesn't want anybody who's awake to see him. Nobody knows that he goes to the dandelion field at night, actually he’s pretty sure he’s the only one who knows about it. Everyone just thinks he goes out for walks sometimes, nothing more.
Making excuses for why he's awake gets annoying, so Denki would prefer if nobody saw him.
He smirks when he reaches the class 2-A dorm building, squeezing through the window that’s broken and can never close properly. Denki isn’t sure if Aizawa knows he sneaks out at night, if he does then he probably doesn’t care. Nobody's ever talked to him about it.
Once he reaches his dorm room, he plops down in his bed after locking the door. It’s a force of habit at this point, Mineta always used to sneak into people’s rooms (especially the girls) at night before he got expelled. Shinso from general studies ended up taking his place, which was a HUGE relief.
Besides the fact that Shinso is not a perv (bare fucking minimum), he's also REALLY hot. Denki smiles to himself at that, aware that Shinso is only one room over. Kyoka's room is on the opposite side of Denki's.
His mind drifts back to Kyoka and the confession. He frowns at his ceiling. Denki is NOT going to psych himself out or worry over this any longer. He's made his choice.
“Tomorrow. I’m doing this tomorrow” Denki whispered to himself, trying to gain some confidence in his decision.
That’s right. Tomorrow Denki will finally tell Kyoka that he loves her.
He sighs, closing his eyes, exhaustion creeping up on him. He almost doesn’t want to fall asleep, in fear of tomorrow coming too fast. Sleeping is something he both loves and hates, making most nights a battle of staying awake. Alas his exhaustion wins and he starts to drift off.
"Goodnight" Denki whispers to no one but himself, falling into a dreamless sleep.
