Pouring

Summary:

It's pouring out, and all Casey can do is figure out what went wrong with him and her as their paths diverge.

Notes:

Based on "Ref:rain" by Aimer. Really good song, highly recommend.
Wrote it all on one sitting, which is rare for me (but still definitely let me know what I can improve on!).
Disclaimer: I am one month in on studying engineering, so I am totally allowed to write badly (for now at least).

Work Text:

It poured out of her on a rainy afternoon of a day that belonged to lovers, one that belonged to him and his her, not her, never her

It poured on a park bench outside of the new beginnings that had no place for her.

The pangs of unrequited love are never easy.

Questions Casey never asked herself had bubbled up to the surface, subconscious to conscious.

She felt their pressure while sitting, wet dressed knees to her chest, heels off.

Each question was a suffocating weight akin to her own, and she struggled to breathe amidst her sobs.

Why did she didn't know? Why, why, why?

She should have known back from the day she met him - fuck! How was she so blind? She should have seen it.

Casey inhaled sharply as another question came to mind.

Did she know?

Was she just trying to ignore it? And did it matter if she was blind if she couldn't afford to do anything about it?

Casey felt the rain stop falling on her.

She turned her head to see the sky when she smelled him, a wonderful but wrong scent, and froze. Black umbrella covered her peripheral vision.

She could see his signature smirk through hearing his chuckle. "Wow. Even on my wedding day, you're always making it about you."

And then Casey had to ask. "Why didn't you call during college? Why didn't you say hi or bye or anything?"

"Well, why didn't you?" He asked softly, so soft she turned and looked at him past the suit and tie. His eyes were as glassy and soft as his tone, and suddenly everything she knew of him made sense. The weird undertone she had realized had a reason.

Her mind turned and went places.

It went to imagining his touch, his hands around hers, the small of her back. It went to craving for the hockey jerseys she could have worn, the food she could have cooked, tasted, with him, the kisses she could have tasted from him, the hugs he could have given that she could have buried herself in forever.

The worst love is the kind you think is unrequited but never was. The kind that could have been no matter the odds.

It seemed that they stood together in their world of their daydreams for infinity until a ray of sun hit their path, and the family came outside in good spirits to check on them.

Then he was off on a journey with his beloved, and Casey was left with nothing but her own reimaginings.
