Summary
Severus learned at an early age that jack o' lanterns weren't just for fun. His mother told him their origins, told him how the seams of the world came a little loose around halloween time, how the barrier between worlds was thinnest in the dead of night on All Hallow's Eve. Things could come through, if you weren't careful. But if you carved a jack o' lantern, and placed it outside of your home, it would keep watch there, and frighten away those malignant spirits. Severus carved a pumpkin for their home in Cokeworth every year after that. And when he returned to Hogwarts as a professor, he began carving them there, too.
This is a little one-shot fic inspired by the "Pumpkin Carving" Snapetober prompt (snapetober prompts by sxvxrxssnape on Tumblr) in which Professor Snape does his bit to protect the castle during the Halloween season... much to the displeasure of the house elves.
