Chapter Text
“V, we’re gonna be payin’ for this tomorrow. Or I guess, later today. You know that, right?”
Pulling the blanket further over them, V nestled herself closer to Judy and wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her in tightly as she spooned her.
“Was totally worth it Jude,” V replied as she nestled her nose against the back of Judy’s neck. “It’s been ages since I stayed up the whole night. At least, not while on a gig.”
Despite the hesitation in her voice, the whole thing had actually been her idea. Although they loved each other deeply and tried to carve out as much time as possible for one another, the last few months had been difficult.
So when the rare opportunity had presented it for the pair of them to be able to get away for a night, Judy had decided to act upon it and had suggested they stay awake the entire night so they could spend as much time together as possible.
When V had arrived, they had quickly dragged handfuls of blankets and pillows onto the rooftop of Judy’s apartment and laid them out to form an intimate, cozy space with an incredible view of the Night City skyline before them. After V had run back downstairs and returned a few moments later carrying their pizza and a handful of beers, they had snuggled up together and enjoyed their rare night together.
Judy frequently found herself being pulled further into her work as the market for braindances continued to grow. Her talents were unrivaled in Night City, and between the seemingly never-ending stream of requests for new virtus and the constant flow of job offers from studios, it had recently become more than a full-time job.
V meanwhile, had been taking on more and more gigs recently, causing her free time to slowly evaporate away. The gigs she accepted now weren’t of the same, dangerous variety as she had been used to prior to having the relic chip removed.
After Panam’s friends had helped to fix the neural damage the chip had caused, her and Judy had decided together not to push their luck any further. And so, whether it was recovering stolen property or investigating cheating spouses, V would chase down as many gigs as she could to keep the eddies coming.
But where the eddies were going however was another matter which, despite her constant prodding, V had stubbornly refused to answer.
After a few minutes of silence had passed between them, Judy tilted her head slightly.
“Still awake back there?”
V’s voice was groggy, but still clear enough to understand. “Always the suspicious tone. Not like I ever do anythin’ that warrants it.”
Judy sighed. “V, I love you, but you are the biggest gonk I’ve ever met.”
Although she couldn’t’ see V’s face, she felt her lips press gently against her skin and form a smile.
“And proud of it! Besides, if you think I’ve been a giant gonk up until now, well then...prepare yourself...”
As V’s voice trailed off, Judy thought she heard a hint of nervousness in her voice.
Judy’s brow creased in confusion as she shifted and rolled onto her other side so she could face V. Her eyes briefly caught sight of the orange glow which was slowly lighting up the horizon. When she saw V’s face, her heart skipped a beat.
“V? What did you do?” Judy asked, again in a suspicious tone.
V anxiously bit her lower lip as her hand slid further under the blanket which was draped over them.
“So, uh...know how you keep askin’ me ‘bout where my eddies are goin? Well...I bought somethin’. Kinda’ expensive too.”
Judy’s eyes widened. “V! What the hell did you buy? Thought we agreed we were gonna save to get a place together? I swear, if you bought one of those Captain Pickhard’s I’m gonna tear you a new one.”
As Judy watched V’s expression change, her frustration began to fade away. V’s face had suddenly taken a serious appearance as she sat up.
“Can you let me get through this without interruptin’ me Jude? Kinda’ want to make sure I do this right.”
Judy nodded uncertainly as her eyes drifted towards something which was clutched in V’s fist. What had she bought?
“Thanks. So...Judy. I...oh shit, I’m gonna screw this up. Well, fuck it.” V briefly glanced down at her fist before her eyes darted back to Judy’s. “I love you Judy. More than you’ll ever know. Every day I wake up feelin’ like the luckiest fuckin’ gonk in the world. I...I really don’t deserve someone like you in my life. Still don’t know what you see in me. But I’m so happy that you did see me. That you noticed me.”
As V took a deep breath, Judy’s’ heart began to pound in her chest. Slowly, she sat up. It couldn’t be...
“I guess...what I mean to say is...Judy, will...will you marry me?”
Judy stared dumbfounded as V held out her upturned fist and opened it, revealing a pair of golden bands resting upon her palm.
As she tried to clear away the spots which were forming at the edges of her vision, Judy’s eyes remained locked on the pair of rings which seemed to stare up at her. In the back of her mind, she had always just assumed that her and V would eventually make things official. She loved her more than anyone she had ever met before, without any hesitation, and they had been planning for a long future together as they had looked into condos, searching for a place they could call their own.
But still, everything had suddenly become so...real.
“Judy?” V asked with a twinge of fear in her voice. “You’re keepin’ a girl in suspense here.”
Judy’s eyes drifted to V’s. Although she tried to focus upon them, she found it impossible as her own eyes burned with tears.
“Oh V...yes!”
Judy threw her arms around V and embraced her as tightly as she could. “I love you so much!” she managed in a choked whisper as she felt the hot wetness of V’s tears dripping onto her shoulder.
As Judy shifted her head slightly and opened her eyes, she caught sight of the sun peeking above the horizon, casting the city in a vibrant, golden glow. The dawn of a new day shone brightly upon them.
