pumpkins scream (in the dead of night)

Summary:

Tommy perks up. “Well, it’s fall, right?”

“Yeah?” Ranboo doesn’t sound enthused, per se, but at least he’s putting in effort, unlike some people.

Tommy nods decisively. “So pumpkins.”

“... Pumpkins?” Ranboo tilts their head to the side.

“Pumpkins!” Tommy reinforces with more energy. “That’s what people do, right? Once it gets around now they start carving pumpkins. Family bonding and shit.”

“Uh, I guess?”

or: bench trio carve pumpkins together

Work Text:

“What is up, my fellow teens." Tommy says, flopping onto the mattress he, Tubbo, and Ranboo share.

They’d only really started decorating their room a week ago, and being the broke college kids they were, they’d just decided to buy a large mattress for all of them. It was a little odd, and took up most of the space in their room, but it worked.

“What do you want, Tommy,” Tubbo deadpans, spinning around in his chair.

Tommy pouts. “I thought you’d be more excited to talk to me than that .”

“Oh, Tommy dearest, it’s ever so good to see you,” Tubbo mocks in a high voice, bursting into giggles when Tommy sulks. “Would you like some tea and crumpets?”

“Fuck you.” Tommy states plainly, glaring at the floor.

“Well if I ever!” Tubbo gasps, falling back on his chair with a hand pressed to his forehead. “How could you use such expletives in this house? The shame!”

Tommy levels him with a blank expression. “Do you want to hear what I have to say or not?”

“I will.” Ranboo pipes up from the corner. Tubbo scoffs. “Pushover.”

“Yep, that’s me alright.” Ranboo stands, draping himself over the chair like an overgrown cat. “What’s up?”

Tommy perks up. “Well, it’s fall, right?”

“Yeah?” Ranboo doesn’t sound enthused, per se, but at least he’s putting in effort , unlike some people.

“Well fuck you too, Ranboo. You guys are no fun.” Tommy scowls. Idiots, both of them. ( His idiots though! A voice in the back of his mind supplies. And, well, it’s not wrong, is it?) “Guess I’ll just go pumpkin picking by myself.”

And just like that, Tubbo’s on him, grabbing his hand and rambling about the pumpkins they’re going to get. Ranboo settles in easily on his other side, chuckling softly in amusement.

Yeah, Tommy thinks. This is good.

-

Well, it’s good until Tubbo starts throwing small pumpkins at him. Sure, they’re just more irritating than anything, but it’s still a pain in the ass to deal with.

They’ve set up shop in a secluded part of the pumpkin patch they went to, far enough away from people that they can pick their pumpkins in peace. Which means, of course, that Tubbo can throw all the tiny pumpkins he wants without getting caught.

“Ranboo,” Tommy whines, facedown in the grass. “Help me.”

“Uh, actually I think I’ll opt out of this one,” Ranboo laughs nervously.

“Please, c'mon,” Tommy attempts puppy dog eyes, which are surprisingly hard to do when you aren’t looking at the person.

“No, I think I’m good- hey!”

Tommy grins from where he’s thrown a projectile at them, ducking immediately to avoid a counterattack from Tubbo. “Help me, bitch boy.”

Ranboo doesn’t help him. In fact, he stands there for a solid three seconds before hightailing it out of there, leaving Tommy to the wolves.

Life is pain and existence is suffering.

Tubbo does get him ice cream afterwards, which makes up for it entirely, Tommy thinks, licking his “abomination of flavors”, as Ranboo calls it.

He thinks his chocolate-strawberry-cinnamon-fudge-swirl is perfectly fine, thank you very much.

Soon enough, they’re home and starting on carving their pumpkins.

“Fellas, is it gay to have an among us pumpkin?” Tommy asks, blurring the ‘among us’ so it sounds like one word.

“Yes.” Tubbo replies, not hesitating a second. He’s concentrating on his pumpkin, so enraptured he doesn’t look up. “Absolutely.”

Tommy sighs. “Well, there goes that idea.”

“We’re all aro?” Ranboo questions.

“Shut up, boob boy.”

“I thought we were done with that nickname, dear god.” Ranboo groans, putting his head in his hands.

Tommy grins. “Never.”

Ranboo sighs, but seems to have given up. “Please?”

"Not a chance, bitch."

"Fine, guess I'll just start calling you names, street-gum."

Tommy blinks. "What the fuck?"

Ranboo, looking far too smug, raises an eyebrow. "You heard me."

Tommy grabs his knife.

-

“Hey now, hey now, let’s not do this,” Ranboo says, eyes darting around as he backs up against the wall.

“No, no, you don’t understand. I need to,” Tommy takes another step forward, brandishing the knife in front of him.

“No, I really feel like you don’t want to do this,” Ranboo’s backed into a corner now. There’s nowhere to go for him. Tommy grins wickedly.

“-Because I have this!” Ranboo cackles, launching pumpkin goop at Tommy’s head.

“You traitor!”

“You were threatening me with the knife!”

Tubbo cackles. “Oh, come on Tommy, you have to admit Ranboo has a point."

“I hate you.” Tommy grouses. “No Tommy cuddles for you today.”

Tubbo gapes at him, outraged. “Me?! I was just pointing it out, Ranboo should be the one with revoked cuddle privileges! What the fuck?”

Ranboo, looking very smug, shrugs. “Just how it works out, I guess.”

“You fuck.“ Tubbo states, and Tommy bursts out laughing.

-

A few hours and some more mishaps later, they’re finally ready to show each other their finished product.

Tommy goes first, revealing the fabled ‘among us pumpkin’ that he’d decided to do.

(“You could say- you could say Tommy’s pumpkin is- it’s-” Tubbo gasps out between laughter. “It’s sus.”

Tommy whacks him with a pillow.)

Ranboo’s second, revealing the most basic pumpkin Tommy’s ever seen. It looked like something from the set of a movie, it was so standard.

(“Ran...”

“What?” Ranboo asks, self conscious.

“Nothing, nothing, it’s fine. Great, uh… face.”

"Thanks?")

Last is Tubbo, who has the most terrifying picture that has ever been carved onto any pumpkin ever, actually.

(“It’s supposed to be a bee ?!” Tommy asks, outraged.

“Yep!” Tubbo grins unfalteringly.

“Tubbo, are you- I mean, it looks fine!- but are you sure you want this to be, um, outside our house?” Ranboo hesitantly asks.

“Absolutely, boss man.”

“... Okay.”)

All in all, Tommy decides, it’s been a good day.

And then, for some unknown reason, the universe decides that it’s going to be nice to him today, and makes it even better.

“Toms?” Tubbo asks, voice slightly clouded with sleep. He had, infact, been given his allotted Tommy cuddles of the day, and was curled up at Tommy’s chest. Ranboo was a solid weight behind both of them, lanky arms wrapped around them.

“Mhm?” Tommy replies, trying to be quiet. Normally, he wouldn’t have any reservations about being loud, but for some reason it feels like this moment would be shattered with that.

“Y’know earlier today, when you were first asking about pumpkins?” As Tubbo speaks, Tommy wracks his brain, trying to remember the conversation.

“Yeah?”

“You called us family.” Tubbo’s smile shines through his voice.

“I… yeah, I did.” Tommy swallows, suddenly nervous.

“I think you’re family too.” Tubbo says, and oh boy, if that isn’t something Tommy’s going to be thinking about for the next week.

“Guys,” Ranboo croaks from behind them. “You’re going to make me cry.”

“Then cry.” Tubbo snarks, but softens. “But honestly, you both are the best family I could have asked for. I love you two.”

“Just had to do it to us, didn’t you?” Tommy sniffles, pulling Tubbo into a bone-crushing hug. “Fuck, man. I love you both so much.”

Ranboo presses them both close to him, burying his face into Tommy’s hair. “ Guys ,” He pleads. “Oh my god. Love you both too, but man you didn’t have to go that hard.”

Tubbo laughs wetly. “Okay, enough sappiness for today, everyone go the fuck to sleep.”

A chorus of ‘goodnight’s fill the room, and Tommy’s heart has never felt so warm.
