Five times they almost got caught and the one time they did for real

Summary:

They had really almost perfectioned their way to keep their new found relationship a secret. Even though there were so many close calls they could always keep all the other people away from themselves. They never got caught.
Except the one time they were too much in a hurry to keep their guard up...

Notes:

I had this certain picture of them stuck in my head for a while and all of a sudden there was this idea how to put it into a story. And there it is :D

Work Text:

~*~ First ~*~

„Magnus, we have to…” Alec grinned and whispered at the other who kind of already pulled him back into another kiss. “Shhhh, don’t worry. Nobody will see us here.” He simply said before their lips met again in a deep kiss, both their hands roaming over their bodies, not an inch between them. “Magnus… stop…” Alec huffed, pushing the other away for a second, trying to regain his breath even though his action left the other pouting. “What? Why do we have to stop?” Magnus almost grumbled, taking a step back as well to straighten his shirt. “You know we’re not hidden that well. Anybody could walk in on us. The bleachers here are hardly a good hiding spot. We should not make out kind of semi-public.” Alec chuckled and raised his hand to brush a strand of the other’s hair away that had dared to get out of his perfect styled hairdo, almost regretting it that they had to stop what they were doing.

“Pfff… I don’t care. I think it’s perfect, love.” Magnus simply stated even though Alec knew that he kind of did care. They had been together for almost two months now and nobody, except his siblings, knew about them. People did not even know about their preferences because why should they walk around and throw this kind of private information at everybody around the school after it was none of their business. Both wanted to keep their relationship a secret for now as long as possible because this thing between them was still new and they wanted to keep it just for themselves for some time to be able to enjoy this to its fullest. After all, the school and the other students would find out soon enough. Or they would tell people, kind of coming out to them... but yes, this was not the time to dive deep into these kinds of thoughts. Not when they were together, standing beneath the bleachers to have a few minutes for themselves. They should just live in the moment and being with each other right now. “You’re cute when you start to pout, Magnus.” The taller boy chuckled and leant in to place a quick kiss onto Magnus’ nose who narrowed his eyes for a second. “Don’t call me cute, Lightwood. Or I have to punish you for that.” He replied in a playful tone, pinching the other’s side slightly which made Alec jump a bit. “No way, don’t use the tickling against me. Don’t play unfair, Magnus.” He whined. “As if… I am such a nice person. I would never play foul, Alexander.” The look on Magnus’ face betrayed his words as he took a step closer to pull Alec back into his arms, trying to get a hold of him to tickle him some more. Alec could not get away from Magnus’ grip, no chance to evade the tickling which caused him to start to giggle, trying to move away. “I surrender.” He gasped with a little laugh, not being able to stand such a treatment for a longer time span than ten seconds.

“I could have sworn I heard someone here.” All of a sudden, a male voice could be heard and both of them froze on the spot, their arms still around each other. “Do you really think Alec’s here already? Training is about to start in around half an hour. It would be too early, even for him.” Another one replied and the two of them recognized the voices of two of their teammates. Without talking to each other, just nodding slowly, Alec and Magnus let go of each other and took a few steps back. Their eyes were at the direction where they could hear the two other boys talking, trying to use the Lacrosse field’s bleachers for their privacy so that they would not be seen. “See you in a few, Magnus.” Alec whispered and pecked the other’s lips as they were out of sight of their teammates, ready to part. “See you, Captain.” Magnus winked at him and left, on his way back to the locker room to get changed for the training while Alec waited for a moment until Magnus was completely out of sight before he headed towards the other two guys that had almost spotted them earlier. That had been a close call.

He took a deep breath as he got closer so that they could see him. “Hey.” He greeted them casually, putting down his bag onto the bench right next to the field. “Oh, hey, Alec.” A blond guy replied. “See, I told you. I thought I’ve seen Alec around here.” The other boy rolled his eyes. “Do you have an Alec radar or what?” He asked with a huff which caused Alec to laugh under his breath. “Bad mood today?” He asked and the blond nodded. “Yeah, he’s kind of pissed because we got our literature class papers back. And he just has a B minus.” The other boy answered Alec’s question. “Oh, really? Maybe I should ask the coach to let you stay back for a while to catch up on school business.” Alec teased which earned him another groan. “Don’t you dare...” The boy muttered and huffed again. He seemed really pissed at the grade he had gotten.

The three of them fell into an easy banter, talking the whole time until the rest of the Lacrosse team joined them one after another. Magnus was the last one to appear, just two minutes too late. “Bane, do you need a watch?” Alec greeted him and crossed his arms in front of his chest as the other ran towards them. Nothing in his posture or the way of talking gave away what the two of them had done just half an hour ago not very far from here. “Why? You want to gift one to me, Captain?” Magnus replied with a grin which earned him an eyeroll. Even though he was dating Magnus Alec would never give him an easy time during practice. Magnus had to “suffer” like everybody else.

“And because Bane here decided to not be on time... let’s warm up with a few rounds around the field until the coach is here.” Alec’s eyes wandered around the team for a moment. He could hear some groans but nobody said anything against it. They were a team after all. “Sorry.” Magnus shrugged his shoulders but hurried to start running, not that Alec would think about anything else to punish the whole team.

~*~ Second ~*~

Magnus giggled. “Alexander, stop.” “Why would I? You never stop when you start to tickle me.” Alec grinned. He held the other boy with one arm, the other roaming underneath his shirt, poking his sides to make the other laugh. “Please. Stop. I give up. I surrender. You won.” Magnus sounded a bit out of breath due to all the laughing, trying to get away from Alec, trying to squirm his way out of the other’s arm. But his grip was stronger than expected (and maybe Magnus was not trying one hundred percent, enjoying the closeness too much) and Alec followed Magnus’ movements until they hit the wall of the locker room in the back, Magnus pinned between the cold stone and Alec’s body.

“Um... stop it. Please.” Magnus repeated and stared at the taller boy from under his lashes, trying to act coyly even though there was still a big smile playing around his lips. “You know that this is not going to work, don’t you? No puppy eye magic.” Alec replied with a raised eyebrow, leaning down to put a quick kiss onto the other’s lips. “It isn’t? What a pity.” Magnus still tried to wiggle out of Alec’s grip, rubbing his body against the other.

They both could feel it. Their closeness, their bodies pressed against each other. And then, all of a sudden, the situation changed immediately and there was this certain tension between them. Magnus licked his lips, staring at the other boy. Their breath had started to speed up. “Magnus...” Alec muttered with a low voice, loosening his grip and looking down at the other. His hands moved underneath Magnus’ shirt, touching the bare skin and pulling the other closer towards him while Magnus’ arms and hands went around Alec’s neck, both completely aware of Magnus being pressed against the wall behind them and how good this felt. They had to swallow hard and for a moment there was silence between them before just a second later their lips were onto each other. Their innocent tickling had turned into something way more heated. A soft groan could be heard and none of them knew who had made that sound, too lost in their deep and passionate kiss.

They almost did not hear the locker room’s door as it opened. “Shit.” Alec hissed, pushing himself away from Magnus the moment they heard it. “Get away, I’m going to distract them.” He muttered, not sure how he could muster up so many words right now, leaning in for a quick kiss before Magnus nodded. Without any further noise he snuck to the other end of the row with lockers, trying to sneak out of the room without being seen. In the meantime, Alec took a second to take a deep breath. He pushed his hand through his hair, trying to tame it at least a bit, hoping his look did not give away too much right now, before he walked towards the other end of the row to look who had entered the room.

“Oh, Captain. You’re still here?” One of his teammates, Carstairs, greeted him and Alec nodded. “You look a bit... dishevelled? Are you okay?” The boy looked at him with a questioning look but otherwise obviously clueless. Alec could just imagine himself how he would look after the little make-out session with Magnus. “Um... just added some more training to my schedule and just came back. No need to worry.” He shrugged, walking towards his locker, trying to stay calm as he grabbed a fresh shirt to change into. “Ah, always on focus.” Carstairs chuckled. “That’s why you are our Captain. But... don’t overdo it. Even you need to rest sometime.” “Sure, no need to worry. I am not training 24/7.” “Glad to hear that.” Carstairs nodded in agreement. “There it is. Just forgot my book in here. See you in class then, Captain.”

He waited until the other had gotten out before Alec leant against his locker. That was close. Again. They really needed to be more careful.

~*~ Third ~*~

"Magnus, it can’t be that hard. See? You add these two and it just...” Alec tried to explain but earned a groan coming from the other. “I will never get it. I will not pass this shitty math exam. And I won’t get my degree then. I will suffer from unemployment while you will go away for college and become a wealthy man. And I will die as a cat lady, alone in my apartment.” Magnus had closed his eyes and let himself fall back against the couch they were currently sitting on. They had been home at Alec’s since school had ended this day to study together. Because Magnus could really need some help at maths.

“Magnus, stop being such a drama queen.” Alec could hardly hold himself back not to laugh due to the other’s behaviour. It was always like that. They tried to study and if there was something Magnus could not grab right away, he acted all drama. “I know you can do it. As always. You are smart.” He knew that complimenting Magnus would help most of the time. And placing his hand at the other’s thigh in a reassuring way. It seemed that he got it right this time as well because the other peaked at him through his fingers, his hand dramatically in front of his face as if he would faint any moment. “You think so? I’m smart?” “Sure. You are one of the smartest people at school. You are not just all good-looking. You are clever and drop-dead gorgeous.” Alec said in a teasing tone as he tilted his head with a smile. Magnus stuck his tongue out at him. “Don’t, Alexander. You can’t just say stuff like that and think that I would go back to studying.”

Alec rolled his eyes and sighed. Yes, even this was as usual. But maybe... they had time for some distraction? They had gone through a lot today already, so... nothing would speak against a little Them-time. And after all, Alec was the last to complain about some time for themselves. “Oh, I cannot? Why?” Alec put down his pen, the other hand still at Magnus’ thigh, and turned towards his boyfriend whose facial expression had changed into more of a kind of seductive grin, the dramatic act completely forgotten. “Because you know that I have to kiss you when you say things like that, instead of studying.” “You can be such an idiot sometimes.” Alec muttered with a laugh, moving towards Magnus. “But you are my idiot.” He added as he saw the little pout on the other’s face. “And you’re mine.” With these words Magnus pulled Alec towards him into a deep kiss.

It took not very long until their shirts were on the floor, their books completely forgotten and Alec was on top of Magnus, still kissing each other feverishly.

“I told you, Alec’s not here.” It was as if Izzy’s voice cut through the room a bit too loud which made them stop immediately. Alec pressed himself even closer against Magnus’ body, trying to hide themselves behind the back of the couch. They were both holding their breaths. Lucky for them, the couch was seated with its back towards the door so that they could not be seen from the hallway.

“But his car is outside and I think I saw him entering the house.” They heard Jessica’s voice. She was one of the cheerleaders and it seemed that she always tried to find any excuse to get close to Alec. Much to Magnus’ dislike. He rolled his eyes as he heard her voice and Alec had to hold back a chuckle. “Yes, his car’s here. But he isn’t. He must have left some time ago to... do stuff.” Izzy tried to explain with a huff. “You sure? I mean... I could wait here until he’s back. I need some help with my homework and...” The girl’s voice sounded so bubbly. Magnus wanted to vomit, gagging slightly which caused Alec to let out a chuckle.

For a second there was silence and they thought they might have been caught. “You know... maybe I can help you. Let’s go upstairs.” Izzy suggested and Alec had to peak over the back of the couch just to see his sister leading Jessica out of the room. She stared at her brother, her eyes glancing towards the end of the couch where one of their shirts could be seen. But obviously and lucky for them, Jessica had not discovered it. “You owe me.” The younger one mouthed at her brother, leading the girl out of the room so that Alec and Magnus were safe for now.

Alec waited until the two girls had vanished before he turned back to Magnus, kind of falling down onto the other boy again. He had closed his eyes. “That was...” He laughed and Magnus nodded. “Yeah, we should...” For a moment there was silence. “Your house then?” “My house it is.” And with this, they grabbed their shirts and books to head straight over towards Magnus’ house where nobody would bother them, no matter if they were learning or doing other stuff.

~*~ Fourth ~*~

"Why do we have to watch this movie again?” Alec sighed after having purchased their tickets, staring at Magnus who seemed to be really happy about having convinced his boyfriend of this movie night out. “Because I like it. It’s good. It’s an old classic. You should try them more often. They are... quite good.” Magnus looked around before leaning in to peck the other’s lips. “And after all... not many people will be in the cinema so we can be us.” He added with a lower voice. “Okay, that is a reason I can totally agree with.” Alec grinned and earned a little snort from Magnus. “What? You know how to convince me. And that I would do almost everything for you.” Alec put his hands onto the other boy’s waist to pull him a little closer. Magnus slung his arms around Alec’s neck like on autopilot, having it done so many times. “I know...” He grinned. “Love you.” He muttered, leaning in again. But before their lips could meet, they heard familiar voices coming closer.

They both pulled apart quickly and Alec moved to hide behind the corner just in time before a few of their teammates appeared. “Hey, Bane. Nice to see you.” Underhill greeted him with a little wave of his hand and smiled. “Hey, guys.” Magnus returned the smile, trying to look casual. “What are you up to? Waiting for your date to arrive? Shouldn’t you go to her house and fetch her?” Will asked teasingly. Magnus had to try hard not to roll his eyes at this, knowing that Alec probably could hardly hold back his chuckle at his hiding spot. “Nah, I’m meeting up with nobody today. There’s this old classic and I really wanted to see it.” He shrugged his shoulders, pushing his hands into his pockets, still trying to look as normal as possible. “Oh, really? So... have fun then. I cannot understand what you like about these old movies. They are no fun. No action.” But before Magnus could get into a deep explanation why he liked these movies the others were already on their way to get themselves some popcorn and drinks.

Alec waited a few seconds before he pulled Magnus around the corner so that they were facing each other again. “That was close.” He whispered, glancing around the corner. “Yeah, it was. Thought you said that they were going to a party tonight so that there would be no risk going to the cinema.” Magnus pouted slightly, crossing his arms. “I’m sorry. Maybe they changed their mind?” He leant down, kissing the other's cheek. “I promise I will make up to this short interruption later.” He wiggled his eyebrows which caused Magnus to laugh. “Dumbass. You know that I cannot resist you.”

The moment the group had their backs to them they slipped into the cinema and into their seats in one of the back rows. “Damn... forgot the nachos. You want something else?” Alec asked but Magnus shook his head. “Nah, I’m fine. Don’t need any of that. You know... I need to stay in shape. The Captain of my Lacrosse team is pretty strict...” He grinned. “What a jerk...“ Alec sighed dramatically with a glint of laughter in his eyes. “Be right back, love.”

While Magnus adjusted himself to the comfy cinema seats Alec went out of the room again to get himself something to eat and a drink. Or better... to get them something to eat and drink. Because he knew even though Magnus usually refused to get something in the first place he started to steal Alec’s food and drink. Alec had learnt that pretty early in their relationship. As he waited in line to order he could hear a voice calling his name. “Oh, Captain. What a surprise.” Alec closed his eyes. Damn, he had thought their teammates were already at their movie. Slowly he turned around. “Hey, nice to see you. Thought you’d be at the party tonight.” He said. Will shook his head. “Nope. Christine’s parents found out last minute so the party had to be cancelled.” “Ah.” Alec nodded, not sure if he should turn around and ignore them now. He just wanted to get back to Magnus who was probably already waiting for him. “What about you? You’re on your own?” Lydia asked and Alec tried to play it casual. “Got ditched last minute. But I really wanted to watch that movie so I decided that I am already grown up enough to come here on my own.” “Oh, you don’t have to be alone, Captain. Join us.” Underhill sounded pretty cheerful, putting his arm around Alec’s shoulder. And before he could really do something against it, they had dragged him towards the movies with them.

“Sorry, got caught and now I’m with our teammates. I promise. I really will make up to this ruined date night, Magnus.” Alec texted while the others were distracted enough to leave him unattended. “... you will have a lot to make up, my dear.” Magnus replied but Alec smiled slightly as “But I still love you <3” followed immediately.

~*~ Fifth ~*~

Magnus really enjoyed the silence at the moment. He was on his own at the library, having a free period. He had decided to work on some things for school that he would have some more free time after school. Time he could spend with Alec.

He was totally invested in his economics book that he did not hear the little whistling close by. Just as it got a bit louder he heard the noise which distracted him from his studies. Magnus raised his head, trying to figure out what that noise was and where it came from.

There. Again. Its source was somehow near a shelf somewhere behind him. Slowly he turned around just to spot a certain dark-haired boy with a wide grin on his face. Magnus rolled his eyes even though he could not stop smiling at the other. Slowly he got up to his feet, trying not to look too obvious as he moved over to said shelf. There were still a few other students around them.

“Alec? Aren’t you supposed to sit in… history class?” He asked after thinking about Alec’s schedule in his head. “Yes. But I prefer being with you. History is boring anyway.” The other glanced around for a second before he pulled Magnus into his arms, hiding behind the bookshelf. “You cannot skip class just to see me. We have to be reasonable.” Magnus stated even though he leant again the slightly taller boy. “Since when? Why do you say such mean things? Who are you and what did you do to my often irresponsible and dramatic boyfriend?” Magnus chuckled. “You are such an idiot sometimes.” “But I am your idiot.” Alec stated matter-of-factly. “True.”

They stood there in silence for a moment, enjoying their closeness. Magnus’ chin rested on Alec’s shoulder and they had closed their eyes for a second, inhaling the other’s scent and just being them. Until…

“It doesn’t make any sense! These books are so stupid. Who put the English literature in between books about physics and biology classes?” Someone got closer, muttering under her breath with a groan. And just before the person got around the corner Alec and Magnus pulled apart. Alec looking at some books on one of the lower shelves while Magnus had pulled out a book from one of the top shelves some steps away from the other, studying its content. Both tried to look as indifferent and casual as they could. “Oi, Magnus, Alec. Do you have a free period as well?” A brunette girl, Sarah, who had some classes with them stopped mid-step, looking at them both. “I have. He… doesn’t.” Magnus stated and even though he did not face Alec right now, he could hear the other rolling his eyes with a huff. “I am going back to my class then, slowpoke.” Alec got back onto his feet to leave the other two.

“Maybe you can help me out, Magnus? You’re smart. Do you get it how they did sort these books? I am desperate. I need a certain book and I cannot find it.” Sarah stepped closer towards Magnus, too much into her search for a book that she did not really wonder why Alec had been there at the first place with Magnus even though he should have been in class, glancing at the other boy with wide pleading eyes.

“Sure, Sarah. What kind of book do you need? I try and use my magic to help you find it. Somehow… I am lucky enough to find anything in here almost every time.” He grinned and put the book he had held back at the upper shelf. Sarah followed his movement as her face lit up. “You seem to have magic indeed. Or maybe you’re a telepath.” She squealed, hugging him for a brief second. “This is exactly the book I was looking for.” She pulled the book out of his hand, pressing it against her chest. “You’re a lifesaver.” She stated and Magnus’ grin widened. “Oh, really? Glad to be of use then.” He bowed slightly which caused her to chuckle. “You are always very helpful.”

“Hope you’re back in class.” Magnus typed a short text to Alec after he had gotten back to his seat and Sarah had left him on his own, not surprised that he immediately got an answer. “Yes, mom. I am.” Alec replied and again, Magnus knew that the other had rolled his eyes while writing that text. “That was a close call. Glad that she kind of announced herself before coming closer.” Another text followed immediately.

~*~ That one time they did get caught ~*~

A sharp noise pierced through this morning’s silence. “Alexander, make it stop.” A tired groan could be heard as the alarm woke Magnus too early for his own taste. “I try.” The other muttered, slowly opening his eyes and blinking due to the brightness in his room and reaching for his alarm to quiet it. “Good. That’s a lot better.” Magnus sighed contently as the sound was gone all of sudden after Alec had pressed the stop button.

“Morning, sunshine.” Alec yawned, finally able to open his eyes completely, before he pressed a little kiss onto Magnus’ head, the other still cuddled up against him. “I think we should get up.” He stated but the other did not really make any effort to get out of bed. Alec had to chuckle at the mumbled words, Magnus moving closer, pressing himself against the other’s body. “Don’t want to.” That was all Alec could hear. “I think we should…” The taller boy started as his eyes darted to his alarm. “Shit!” He exclaimed, sitting up straight in his bed, causing Magnus to open his eyes as well in shock, almost tumbling out of the bed due to the sudden movement. “What the…?” He started, trying to figure it out why Alec was reacting like that. “Magnus, I think we overslept. We need to hurry. That’s not the first alarm, that’s… we just have twenty minutes until school starts.”

It felt as if somebody had poured cold water over their heads, both boys hurrying out of the bed, trying to get dressed with some pants and their team shirts, grabbing their backpacks to leave the house just a few minutes later. “We shouldn’t tell my parents about that. Otherwise you’re not allowed to sleep over at a weekday anymore in the near future.” Alec muttered, feeling a bit stressed as they rushed towards the school. “Yeah, just hoping that none of your siblings will tell. Why didn’t they wake us?” Magnus questioned with a huff and Alec shrugged his shoulders, sprinting towards the school.

They were lucky. They just arrived two minutes before classes would start so that they could get to their locker to grab the books they needed. And because they were still too much in a hurry they did not notice some of the glances they got from other students who looked at them slightly confused.

Magnus just noticed that something was different today when he heard people whispering behind their hands as he walked along the hallway after their second period. He had no clue what had happened but maybe it was nothing important. Maybe it was just because of their upcoming Lacrosse match. He did not really pay too much attention. People would always find something to talk about.

“So… anything to tell me?” Raphael leant against the locker next to Magnus as the boy exchanged his chemistry books with some French books. “What is there to tell?” Magnus asked and turned towards the other boy who just grinned at him and shrugged his shoulders. “Oh, I don’t know. You tell me.” For a moment both stared at each other, Raphael still grinning at him like a weird version of the Cheshire Cat. Magnus returned the stare, confusion written all over his face and some doubt about his friend’s sanity. “Whatever…” Raphael let out a little laugh. “See you later, Magnus.” And with this, he left the other. “I should really think about who to befriend. Some of them are weird.” Magnus muttered and shook his head, before he closed his locker to head over towards French class.

***

It was their lunchbreak. Magnus sat at one of the tables already while he waited for his friends to arrive to have lunch with them. And as usual, Alec was the first one to show up. He looked different as he walked towards Magnus, setting down the tray with food at the table before he slipped onto the bench right next to Magnus. “Did something happen today?” He asked, confusion in his voice. “Why?” Magnus put down the apple he just had taken a bite of. “People are staring at me. It feels… weird? I heard them whispering and… do I have something in my face? Is there…” His hand moved immediately towards his neck. “Do I have any visible hickeys?” He hissed under his breath. “No, don’t worry. I know how to be careful with that.” Magnus replied.

He felt slightly uncomfortable. The cafeteria was already crowded with a lot of students. Everything was buzzing, people were talking and… it felt familiar but yet somehow different because they could spot a few students glancing towards them, leaning against each other, talking. Before they could think about it even more a group consisting of Clary, Izzy, Raphael, Simon, Cat and Ragnor approached the table to sit down as well. Usually, their friends all chatted with each other and they all fell into a nice chit-chat during their break.

But even this was different today. They all just sat there, quiet, looking at Alec and Magnus. Some looked very serious (or at least tried to), some had a grin plastered all over their faces. The look on Izzy’s face was... not really readable. Alec started to feel uneasy, his eyes hovering over their faces. He had absolutely no clue what was wrong with people today. “So…?” Clary asked with a raised eyebrow, looking very smug at them. “So… what?” Magnus almost snapped. They could feel the tension even though they did not know why there was even one. And it was getting on their nerves.

“Could you please explain what is this all about?” Alec asked. But before any of their friends could answer, Jace approached them, late to lunch as always. “Nice way of coming out, my dear brother.” He laughed and smacked the other’s back before sitting down. “Coming…” Alec started and Magnus ended it. “…out?” They both asked in disbelief. “You…” Jace frowned and tilted his head. “I thought this was your way of telling everyone about you and Magnus.” “Telling… about… what?” Alec still had problems to wrap his head around what was happening right now.

“Haven’t you looked at yourself this morning?” Simon chimed in with a wink, pointing at their shirts. The moment after the question had left the boy’s mouth, it somehow dawned on Alec and Magnus. Alec grabbed Magnus shoulder to pull him around, staring at the other’s back, at the shirt, where he could read in big white letters “13 Lightwood”. He blinked and turned around to show Magnus his back, a bright “28 Bane” could be read there.

“We must have mixed them this morning…” Alec muttered as he turned back towards Magnus, staring at him. He started to nibble at his lower lip, something he just did when he was really nervous. “Um… I mean… it’s not a big deal… we… it happens all the time that you would wear the wrong shirt and…” Usually Magnus was not that bad with words but this situation had gotten him unexpected and he tried to save it at least a bit. “Yeah, sure…” Raphael waved his hand, shaking his head. “As if.”

There was another moment of silence and Alec glanced at Magnus, not sure what to do next. Magnus raised an eyebrow in an unspoken question and for a moment Alec thought about it before he slowly nodded, agreeing without words to tell their friends. “Alexander and I, we are dating. Actually, we’re boyfriends.” Magnus simply stated and reached over to take Alec’s hand in his, entangling their fingers. They could hear a few gasps from a table close by. Obviously, some people had seen them holding hands now or maybe they had even heard his words. But they did not care right now.

“Finally.” Izzy and Jace muttered in unison, glad that they would not have to help hiding their brother’s relationship any longer. It had been hard for them in the past weeks because the boys could hardly keep their hands by themselves so that Izzy and Jace had to come to their rescue more than once. “You knew?” Simon turned to Izzy who nodded. “Makes sense.” Cat shrugged, sipping at her orange juice.

“Just for your interest… I think I can speak for all of us. Except Izzy and Jace who where your accomplices the whole time.” Clary said, still having a grin on her face even though it had gone a bit softer now. “We all knew that there was something between you two although nobody could really get a grip on it. Now it all makes sense. You have to expect a lot of questions about your relationship. And about why you didn’t tell us earlier. But first… lunchbreak. I am starving.” And with this, she pulled her tray closer and started to eat. The others just followed. And a few moments later everything was back to normal, like every other lunchbreak at their table, all of them emerged in their conversations about school, the upcoming winter’s ball and last weekend’s party.

“This was… really unexpected.” Alec had turned towards Magnus, their friend’s voices just some noise in the background right now. He was still a bit confused how everybody took the information. Not that he had thought that any of their friends would think bad about them or would say something inappropriate. Because these people were great. He just had thought that after they would find out there would be a different reaction. A bit more… excited? Noisy? Not like ‘okay, it’s confirmed, let’s get back to business as usual’. “You sound a bit disappointed.” Magnus whispered, a soft smile played around his lips. “I am… no, I am not. It’s just…” Alec stammered. “You are cute when you have no clue what to say.” Magnus stated and leant over to kiss the other’s cheek. There was no need to hold back anymore. Their friends knew now and the students at the cafeteria knew. Soon the whole school would know, the information would spread like a bushfire. Not that he did mind. “Magnus!” Alec muttered, looking around immediately after the innocent kiss. “You know… it doesn’t matter anymore. People know about us now after we outed ourselves by accident. We don’t have to keep this a secret anymore.” Magnus explained, his thumb brushing over Alec’s hand. “Right…” It seemed as if it dawned Alec just at this moment. “No need to hold back anymore.” And with this he leant in to place a quick kiss against Magnus lips. “I like that.”
