Work Text:
Hannah Baker smiled with glee as she watched Clay Jensen cross the stage with his diploma at Liberty High’s class of 2019 graduation ceremony.
That’s my Helmet. She thought to herself.
They had been together for a while now and it was because of Clay’s tutoring that she was able to get into a good college. The commencement ceremony had been going on for some time and had begun with a spectacular speech by Clay who had been selected as the valedictorian for their graduating class. Hannah was overwhelmed with joy and emotion as Clay spoke on the topic of perseverance, about life being worth living, and how there are always new things to enjoy. There was an electric atmosphere around Clay today.
“You’re a rockstar Helmet!” Hannah sent to Clay via text after he had sat back down at his assigned seat after his speech.
Clay waved toward the crowd as he walked off, toward his parents and most importantly, toward Hannah who was doing the heart shape with her hands at him. He had done the same to her when she crossed the stage earlier. They were great together.
Soon, it was Jeff Atkins' turn to cross the stage. He walked over the stage with his diploma in hand with the type of swagger only Jeff had. Clay couldn’t help but smile and feel proud because had spent hours tutoring Jeff throughout high school. Jeff was thankful he had a friend like Clay and Clay was thankful for Jeff’s tips on girls. They helped each other out, Jeff did well in school because of Clay and Clay was finally able to get around to asking Hannah out thanks to Jeff’s advice. Maybe Hannah would have accepted without Jeff’s help, but it didn’t hurt. Prom with Hannah had been a dream come true after everything. High school had been tough for everyone at Liberty High, especially for Clay and Hannah, but somehow, they got through it. There were times when Hannah thought she couldn’t go any further but if it wasn’t for good people like Clay, Tony, Jeff, and others along the way, she wouldn’t be graduating today. It was the happiest day of her life and she was looking forward to whatever came next.
