Chapter Text
"I'm sorry Adrien, I don't think I- we… I don't think we can keep going like this. We have to break up."
Kagami blinked back the tears that threatened to appear, not wanting to show any sign of weakness. After all, it was for the best that she was doing this.
Adrien tried to think of something to say, but when he opened his mouth to try to speak, he couldn't speak. His throat closed up and his eyes stung. He'd known that this was coming, but that didn't make it any better.
"I understand," he finally managed to choke out.
They both turned away, Kagami finally letting the tears drop as she turned her face away from her ex-boyfriend. She wondered where to go. She didn't really feel like going home right now. Her mother would see that she'd been crying and Kagami didn't want to look weak in front of Tomoe. The only other person she considered a friend was Marinette, but wouldn't her parents complain if she suddenly showed up? She decided to go for it anyway, and five minutes later found herself outside the Dupain-Cheng bakery. Heart in her mouth, she opened the door and stepped inside, keeping her eyes glued to the floor.
"Kagami!"
The girl looked up to see Mari waving at her and grinning.
"This is a nice surprise!" she said, making her way over towards the fencer.
"Yeah..."
"What's wrong?"
There was concern in her voice, and also a note of... hope? Kagami looked around. There weren't many customers, but she'd still rather be in a more private place.
"Can we go up to your bedroom or something?" she mumbled.
Marinette looked mildly surprised, but called out to her mum to tell her where she was going nonetheless.
"Let's go," she said, leading her friend out the bakery and up to her family's apartment above.
Once they were in her bedroom with the door shut, Kagami broke. She started sobbing, shoulders shaking as she sunk down onto the floor. Embarrassed, she hid her head in her hands, curling up into a ball on the floor. She tried to stop, but the tears just kept on coming. Strangely, it seemed to help. She stiffened a little when she felt arms close around her, but relaxed when she realised it was only Marinette.
"Shhh, it's okay," Marinette soothed. "You don't have to tell me what happened if you don't want to, but I'm always here to listen when you're ready."
Kagami leaned in towards her, laying her head on Mari's chest and uncurling from her position a little. Gradually, the tears slowed down, leaving her with red eyes but feeling a lot better.
Marinette ran her fingers through the other girl's hair, muttering sweet nothings for about half an hour. Eventually, Kagami sat up and began to tell her what had happened. She was very comforting, leaving Kagami feeling a lot better about sharing her emotions than she had done in a long time.
"I should go, Mother will be wondering where I am," she said, getting to her feet. "Thank you Marinette."
"No problem, Kagami!" the shorter girl answered. "Anytime!"
As Kagami was making her way home, she realised that her cheeks were warm. She knew why, but pushed it away, not wanting to linger on that thought too much. After all, I her mother found out...
