Work Text:
Keys jangled, shoes shuffled, and Kagome burst out into a bright round of giggles when he dropped the key ring and had to scramble to grab it off the ground.
“You had way too much to drink.” He said with fond exasperation, and she snuggled up to his side with what he supposed was meant to be a sultry smile.
“I did not. I’m just happy. We haven’t had a chance to go out in too long.”
“Got that right.” He said, finding the key and slipping it into the lock.
Some weird kind of yokai cold had swept through Shippo’s household, and he and Rin’s kits had been sick for weeks, one by one taking to bed to sniffle and cough and cry.
So their usual baby sitters were off the table.
As a last ditch effort to get some time alone they’d asked Sesshomaru. He was always so busy with work, they didn’t normally bother him with such things, but Shippo usually did and after so many grandkids they knew he was more than capable.
He’d been more than willing, and so tonight they’d left him with Hitomu and his little sister and raced away.
It had been much needed, but they’d also missed their kids.
Door unlocked, Inuyasha opened it, anticipation to catch his kids as they raced to him making his heart beat a little faster. It never got old, and it was his favorite part about coming home anytime he left.
But the door fully opened, and no little hanyo appeared with wide grins and shrill greetings.
“That’s kinda weird.” Kagome said, and he had to agree. “Unless he’s put them to bed.”
“No, they’re awake. I can hear their heartbeats.”
They walked through the house, following Inuyasha’s nose to the play room. They peeked around the door to find Sesshomaru sitting in the rocking chair, a child on each knee, listening in rapt attention as he told them some tale or other of his previous life of battle and conquest.
“Oi! What’s this? No greeting for your parents?”
Two little heads turned and golden eyes widened. He smiled, waiting for them to pounce, but their little girl, Akemi, clung to Sesshomaru’s shirt and wailed around her pacifier while Hitomu slid off his knee and put his hands on his hips.
“No!!! Don’t come home yet!!!”
“What-“
“We don’t want Uncle to leave yet!!”
“We’ll he’s got to, honey, we’re home now.” Kagome soothed, reaching out to wrap him in a hug, but he backtracked and crossed his arms, glaring so much like Inuyasha she had to bite her lip to keep from laughing.
“No. Uncle Sesshomaru is the coolest! We want him to stay!”
Inuyasha stared wide eyed and confused, looking from his angry son to his brother, sitting placidly in his reading glasses and crisp sweater vest, soothing the little silver haired girl in his lap with a hand on her back.
“You think he’s… cool?!”
“Yeah!!!! Did you know he can make poison with his teeth?!”
He blinked, brows furrowing, and crossed his arms.
Kagome choked down a laugh and went to scoop her upset daughter up, allowing Sesshomaru to stand. They stepped back to watch the stand off.
“Well… I can make blades out of my own blood!”
“Dad that’s gross.”
“Gross?!”
“Yeah!! Blood is gross! Poison is cool!”
“Well… well… my sword can make diamonds!”
“Well his sword can bring dead things back to life!!!”
“I’m not listening to this, it’s your bedtime and Uncle Sessh is going home.”
“No!”
Sweeping from the room, Inuyasha stomped to the kitchen to pour himself a drink, and then the dark cloud of his brother strolled in, a shit eating grin stretching his face, making his fangs gleam.
“Don’t you need to leave.”
“Almost. I wanted to speak to you about something most urgent.”
“What?”
“Yukiji came to see me last week.”
“And what’s urgent about that? Your grandkits are always at your house.”
“And she told me some things I found most alarming.”
“Like what?”
“She came to me, waxing poetic about her wonderful Uncle Inuyasha, and how powerful is diamond making sword was. Apparently she’d seen a demonstration and simply could not stop speaking of it.”
Inuyasha felt his eyes widen again, and he quickly turned to open the fridge and put the juice he’d pulled out back inside.
He knew exactly what Sesshomaru was talking about.
He and Kagome had taken the young girl for the day. She’d already long gotten over the illness creeping through her family and was antsy sitting inside for so long. She’d gone on and on about how awesome her grandpa Sesshomaru was and it had made him sick.
So he’d pulled out tessaiga and made her some shiny rocks.
“Yeah well. You know how she feels about sparkles. It’s not like did it on purpose…” he lied, and when he turned back around, Sesshomaru was leaning over him, a feral grin on his face.
“Oh I think you did. You made my grandkit prefer you over me, so I’ve made your children prefer me to you. Don’t fuck with me hanyo, I’m still playing in leagues you will only dream of.”
His eyes narrowed, but before he could retort, Sesshomaru pulled away, face once more serene.
“Ta-ta, little brother.”
He left the kitchen and Inuyasha stared blankly at the cabinets, listening as Sesshomaru said farewell to Kagome and the kids.
“We can’t thank you enough Sesshomaru.” She said as Sesshomaru gave each child one last hug.
“Think nothing of it.”
“No I’m serious, we had so much fun and it was all thanks to you.”
“I am very pleased to hear it. Children, be good and get into bed. I will see you again very soon.”
Once he was gone, Inuyasha joined his family, once more greeted by his son’s fierce little glare.
“Why didn’t you tell me about Uncle’s sword when my goldfish died?”
Inuyasha looked to Kagome, her yes pinched tightly shut as she tried valiantly not to burst out laughing and he sighed.
‘Oh yeah. If that’s how the bastard wants to play it, then it’s officially war.’
