there was this boy at my school, i remember him sitting next to me in english. we never talked often; most of our conversations consisted of good mornings/good afternoons everytime we passed one another in the hallway.

the longest interaction we had was during lunch. i had walked up to the roof— and he happened to be there as well.

i hesitantly sat down next to him, he didn’t seem to mind. the boy had headphones in, but he took one headphone out and handed it to me. i stared at him for a moment, before accepting his offer.

his music taste wasn’t terrible, in fact i recognized a few songs that were on my playlist too. I looked up to the sky above. it was cloudy that day. lost in thought, i didn’t come back to earth until i heard a plastic-y sound coming from his bag. he pulled out a bit of black licorice.

“want some?” the boy asked, icy blue eyes looking into mine ever so slightly.

“i’m good, sorry. i don’t favor licorice.”

“i see. then what candy do you like?”

“hmmm,” i thought for a moment.

“if i had to say, strawberry mentos. i’ve liked those since i was little.”

“i’ll keep that in mind.”

the bell rang, and i handed his other earpiece back.

“later.” he said, walking away with a stupid grin on his face.

i swear, that boy was one of the cutest people i’ve ever seen.

-

“xiianggglinng!” xingqiu whined, walking next to her.

“what do you want now, qiu?”

“won’t you let me tell you about this adorable boy i saw?”

“only if you try my new dish once we get back to the dorm.”

“alright, fine,” he sighed.

“go on, what’s he like?”

“well, words alone wouldn’t put him to justice. he had this fluffy blue hair, and icy eyes to match. the way the wind blew his hair, my it was so pretty! i had a nice conversation with him, and  we sit near each other in english. his smile was just the cutest.”

“what’s his name?”

“..what?”

“are you telling me you haven’t gotten his name..?”

“come to think of if, no— i haven’t.” xingqiu put a hand behind his head.

“gods, qiu!”

“look, it didn’t occur to me at the time. i’ll ask him tomorrow, okay?”

“okaay, and you’d better introduce me to him too!” xiangling scoffs.

“mhm.” xingqiu smiled at the thought of seeing the boy once more.

xiangling pushed their cart up to the checkout as xingqiu discreetly slid a bag of black licorice into the pile of items as well.

-

xingqiu had been waiting for an opportunity to talk to him, one just wouldn’t come up. [and no, he definitely didn’t miss his chances because he was too nervous.]

alas, the boy ended up going to xingqiu first.

“hey,” he said, tapping xingqius shoulder in the hallway.

“hmm? oh, its you. hello.”

“do you want to walk to class together?” the boy asked rather flatly.

xingqiu felt his face heat up.

“oh, um, sure.”

“what’s your next class?”

“theater, i think. and you?”

“i have theater as well, actually. my schedule got changed today; so i’m a bit all over the place.” the boy chuckled softly.

“s’alright, i’m… glad we have another class together.” xingqiu’s face got the slightest bit red. if the other boy noticed, he didn’t say anything.

“mhm. oh, wait. i never got your name.”

xingqiu cursed in his head. that’s what he was supposed to ask the other boy! once again, he beat him to it.

“it’s xingqiu.”

“xingqiu,” the boy repeated.

“i like that name. mine’s chongyun.”

xingqiu resisted the urge to melt on the spot. xingqiu opened his mouth to say something, but it was interrupted by the other boy.

“looks like we’re here.” chongyun reached for the door, hand accidentally touching xingqiu for just a moment. xingqiu felt his face get redder.

-

“let’s exchange numbers,” xingqiu spoke suddenly.

“oh?” chongyun turned to face him.

“i-i mean, only if you’re comfortable, of course!”

“it’s fine, i was just a bit spaced out. sorry.”

“it’s okay! here put yours into this,” he handed the phone to chongyun

chongyun typed his number in quickly and handed it back, in return pulling out his phone as well and handing it to xingqiu. the other student excitedly took it.

chongyun looked at the flowers while xingqiu entered his number.

“aannd there.” he handed the phone back.

“now we can talk outside of school,” xingqiu smiled.

chongyun smiled back at the other boy.

xingqiu ended up ranting about some novel he’d read recently, as he usually did as the two talked more. chongyun listened as best he could, but he felt sleepy. xingqiu didn’t notice; the other was usually quiet anyway.

he didn’t stop talking until he felt a head rest on his shoulder.

“yun?..i guess he fell asleep.”

xingqiu couldn’t help but smile at the sight.

-

it’d been a few months since the two became friends, and they became inseparable. xingqiu also introduced yun to xiangling, who also enjoyed the fluffy haired boy’s company.

today the three of them were at the mall. well, not three, four. xiangling insisted on bringng  her girlfriend xinyan.

xinyan was an interesting girl, she was interested in music and wanted to someday become a well known artist. she’d even managed to convince xiangling to start a band with her, the two other members being yanfei and hu tao. xingqiu liked xinyan’s personality, and the way she dressed was fashionable too.

the group sat at a cafe, awaiting their food. xinyan and xiangling were bickering about the color scheme of their new venue, whilst xingqiu was teasing chongyun.

“qiu! you know i hate spicy food.”

“yes, yes, i know. but the look on your face yesterday was just too cute.”

chongyun chose to ignore that last comment.

“whatever, how would you feel if i fed you carrots when you’ve expressed that you dislike them?”

xingqiu made a fake gagging noise.

“okay okay i get it, m’sorry.”

“that’s what i thought.

there’s that stupid grin of his again, xingqiu thought.

the waitress walked over and set down there food.

“here ‘ya are. is there anything else i can help you with?”

“no thank you,” xingqiu replied politely.

“enjoy your meal!” she said, walking away.

“sooo, did you two decide on the colors yet?”

“no. ‘yan here wants to do more warm colors, but i think colder colors would be better for this performance.”

“ xiangling! cold colors just won’t give the vibe i want.”

“but it matches the songs we’re going to play more, doesn’t it?”

“what do you think chongyun?”

both girls stared at him tentatively.

“um—“

“c'mon guys! don’t drag yun into this.”

“hush up qiu! let’s hear what he has to say.”

“…sorry, i think i'm gonna side with xinyan. warm colors suit you both better.”

“see! i told you!”

“finnee, you win.”

“love you.”

“love you too or whatever.”

xingqiu made a dramatic gagging noise.

“get a room, you two!”

“oh shut up xingqiu! we all know you like—-“

xingqiu covered xiangling’s mouth.

“don’t listen to her, um, haha,”

“oooh does xinggqiu have a crush?”

xinyan teased him, shoving his hand off xiangling.

“yes, he does! and i…… promised i wouldn't say who it is. oops.”

“xiangling!”

“eek, my bad! this conversation never happened okay?”

“whatever you say.” xinyan laughed.

-

“the moons so pretty tonight, isn’t it yun?”

“mhm. it’s nice out here.”

the two sat on xingqiu’s balcony, legs dangling off the edges.

“those stars over there sort of form a heart, don’t you think?”

“maybe. i can’t see it too well.”

oh, thats right. he isn’t wearing his contacts.

xingqiu leaned his head on yun’s shoulder.

“i wish this moment could last forever,” he mumbled.

“hm?”

“nothing, sorry.”

“alright.”

chongyun closed his eyes, basking in the moonlight as the cold wind graced his skin.

“you should stay over tonight, yun.”

“if you’d like.”

“mm.” xingqiu lifted his head up and got off the balcony.

“let’s go inside before the bugs start coming out.”

chongyun jumped down too, and they headed inside xingqiu’s dorm.

-

the two walked to some remote area, hand in hand. xingqiu had blushed when the other boy took his hand, but he didn’t question it. it was chongyun, so it didn't matter.

yun was showing him something, so it must’ve been special. they’d been walking in comfortable silence for a few minutes now.

yun turned down the corner, and moved a busch out the way using his free hand. the two walked through it, down an old path.

“so, what do you think?”

“it’s… beautiful.” xingqiu said, admiring the little area.

“my brother showed it to me when we were younger. i can’t believe this bench is still here.”

yun took a seat, so xingqiu did the same as well. he hadn’t let go of the boys hand yet.

chongyun pulled out his headphones and slid one in, handing the other to xingqiu as he had once before. xingqiu graciously accepted.

this seemed oddly nostalgic.

for once, chongyun did the talking. he spoke of the memories he’d gotten from this place, the games he and his brother would play when they were little. when his elder brother would pretend to be a spirit for yun just so he could exorcise him. they were um, interesting children.

though he didn’t talk often; he was rather good at describing things in detail. xingqiu couldn’t help but feel enchanted by his words. not thinking, he did something reckless.

he cut off chongyun’s words with a kiss.

for a moment, chongyun froze but eventually returned the kiss. his lips were sweet, sweeter than he’d expect from a boy who’s favorite candy was black licorice. the taste was familiar somehow.

chongyun let go of xingqius hand, to bring his to the navy blue haired boy’s cheek xingqiu put a hand on yun’s waist.

it wasn’t a clean kiss, it was nervous and unsure. but neither cared. the two pulled away, resting their foreheads together.

“you remembered.” chongyun said.

“remembered what?” xingqiu asked confusingly.

“that i like licorice, i mean.”

“oh.”

in truth, xingqiu stared eating them just for chongyun. he didn’t like the taste, but he always seemed to grab more when he went out.

little did he know, chongyun had did the same.

“i remembered your favorite, too.”

“i see that now. you didn’t have to eat those just for me, i know you hate sweet things.”

“and i know you hate bitter things, yet here we are.”

xingqiu averted his eyes.

“i love you, idiot.”

“i love you too.”

-i knew you were the one.
