THAT’S GONNA LEAVE A MARK | Derek Shepherd

Summary:

Derek's fiancee is caught in a fire

Work Text:

Dr. (L/N) knew she should have listened to her fiancee. She usually would have never have given him the satisfaction of saying it out loud but if she could get out now, she would take an eternity of his smugness from being right.

When the fire alarm went off, they were both in the O.R and he had told her to leave the building immediately, before he went to work on getting the patient out with the help of Hunt. She had left the room but not headed towards the door, rather than towards her cubby in the attending lounge. She had left some documents there that she thought were worth saving.

In hind sight, they were not.

She had thought the fire wasn't that side of the building, when the alarm went off, it was for a small, contained fire. She thought that she had a few minutes to get what she needed and get out before Derek even noticed, again she was wrong.

She smelt the smoke before she felt the heat of the flame. It had spread from a room near the lounge, taking the corridor with it. When she went to leave the room, she saw the flames dance through the door window, leaving her trapped. The fumes must had gotten to her, or that's what she had been told.

Dr. Bailey stood at the bottom of her hospital bed. "You'll be fine, (L/N)." (Y/N) smile softly at her words and went to thank her before being cut off by the smaller woman. "It was completely stupid what you did. Shepard's gone up the wall, but I have kept him out for now. I guess I get to tell him the good news."

(Y/N) coughed from the residue smoke in her lungs. "How mad is he?"

"Hell hath no fury like it."

"Thank you, Miranda."

Dr. Bailey just smiled at the woman. She had a soft spot for her and they had become very close friends in the last few years, not that either one would admit it, save they loose their terrifying demeanour to the residents and interns.

(Y/N) looked around the room. She could tell she was in Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital but she couldn't tell which floor until she saw a mirror on the wall.

She was in the severe burns unit.

As she looked into her reflection, she didn't recognise herself. The left side of her face was charred, no doubt it would be scarred. Her eyebrow was halfway burnt off. Luckily the right side was untouched, she must have fell on that side. Her left arm was covered in bandages, no doubt hiding more exposed tissue.

She was so lost in her own reflection that she didn't notice the door open and close behind her.

"What were you thinking?" Derek said, his voice low as if he was trying to stop himself from yelling.

"I wanted to get the papers."

"What papers?" He looked confused. (Y/N) hadn't told him about the papers yet. She was going to surprise him during their lunch break. (Y/N) patted the bed, gesturing him to sit.

She smiled at her fiancee. "The adoption papers, for Zola. The papers came through. We need to sign them and send them off then she is ours. Those papers."

"She's ours?"

"Yeah, she is."
