Work Text:
Himiko twirls around her bedroom, a lovestruck grin on her face as she debates which article of black clothing to wear tonight. The playlist her girlfriend made for her fills the room from her phone’s speakers. She hums along to the tune, fangs poking out. In one hand, she has a black shirt with a cute bat design painted on in bleach. The black shirt in her other hand has a design of My Melody and Kuromi, with the words “be gay! do crimes!” surrounding the two. Himiko pouts a bit as she looks in the mirror.
Or, she tries too. Ugh, sometimes being a vampire isn’t cute!
She sighs. Guess I’ll just go with the My Melody and Kuromi one… Himiko tilts her head in thought. Maybe I should pair it with my bat earrings! And the moon necklace Chako-chan gave me!
Grinning, Himiko pulls the shirt over her head. Ochako had planned out a day-long Halloween date for their first anniversary. Knowing her girlfriend, Himiko was pretty sure that she was going to get messy at one point, so she’d just worn a pair of ripped black jeans and black boots. Well, there were red fishnets underneath her jeans- but they were cute! And they matched the red-and-black striped fingerless gloves she was wearing! As Himiko was finishing putting on her jewelry, a knock sounded at her window.
Excited, Himiko rushed to open the window. Pulling aside one of the blackout curtains, she gasps.
Ochako is on her broomstick, wearing the sun necklace Himiko gave her. Her brown hair is floating slightly around her- a constant side-effect of her gravity magic, making her look ethereal. A witch’s hat sits askew atop her head, moon and stars decorating the ribbon around it’s base, large bow in the back. The skirt of her pink sundress ruffles slightly in the breeze, making it look like the constellations printed on it are moving. She’s got on a chunky cardigan that matches her black leggings, and is wearing her favorite muddy work boots. An umbrella hangs off of her broomstick with a small blue backpack.
And she’s got a warm smile, reserved just for Himiko.
“Hey there,” she says. “Thought we’d get an early start.”
“The sun’s still up,” Himiko whispers, as if that would stop her.
Her girlfriend just grins, and picks up the umbrella. Sticking her tongue out, she fiddles with it for a moment before it opens. It’s black, with points resembling bat wings- but the underside of it is bright red, decorated with little stars.
“Here you go,” Ochako holds out the umbrella so that Himiko won’t get burnt. Grinning, Himiko climbs out of her window and clambers onto the broomstick. She sits behind her girlfriend, and wraps her arms tightly around her waist. Ochako uses a bit of her magic to close the window with one hand, the other still holding onto the umbrella.
She’s got a very satisfied grin on her face. “Thought you might need this today- oh!” Ochako turns back to look at Himiko. “And I also brought a jacket for you, in case you get cold!”
“I’m dead,” Himiko protests, sticking out her tongue. “I don’t get cold.”
Ochako huffs and rolls her eyes. “Alright, but don’t come complaining to me when it starts to get chilly out.”
Ignoring the fact that her girlfriend is probably right, Himiko takes the umbrella from her so that the other can focus on not crashing the broomstick. “So where are we going for our date? You said you wanted to keep it a surprise.”
“We’re going to a pumpkin patch!” Ochako says, directing the broom higher towards the clouds.
“Really?” She blinks. “I mean, if we need pumpkins, we can just go to the grocery store-”
“Absolutely not!” Her girlfriend declares. “It’s not about the pumpkins, Himi- it’s about the pumpkin patch. It’s not about just getting a pumpkin- it’s about everything around it, the hay rides and the apple cider and the corn maze.”
Ochako looks back, eyes sparkling with joy and determination. “And those are all the things we’re going to do today!”
“It’s empty.”
“Yes, I can see that, Himi.” Ochako rolls her eyes, before gently placing her broomstick into her backpack. (It’s magically enchanted so that it’s bigger on the inside. The fact that it has a Tardis design on it is completely coincidental.) She then fishes out a pair of heart-shaped sunglasses for her girlfriend. She hands them to the vampire before pulling out a map of the pumpkin patch. Opening up the map, Ochako continues, “We’re the first ones here! That way, we can get a head start on everything.”
Himiko leans over her shoulder, squinting through the pink shades. “Are we going to get the pumpkins first? We’re here before everyone else, so we should be able to get the best ones.”
“Nope!” Ochako pops the ‘p.’
“What.”
“We’re gonna pick the pumpkins last,” she purposefully ignores the vampire’s flat, unimpressed tone. “First off, we’re gonna have to go on a hayride.”
“Really?” Himiko’s eyebrows scrunch up in confusion. Her eyes track the map in Ochako’s hand, looking at how the route for the hayride tracks throughout the farm. “What about your broomstick? Wouldn’t that be faster?”
“Yes, but today isn’t about shortcuts,” she snaps the map shut, before grinning sheepishly at her girlfriend, “That, and I don’t want to get in trouble with the farm owners.”
A low rumbling sound creeps up on the hill, and the two girls turn to find it’s source. Through the morning mist, a dark green rusty tractor chugs along, pulling behind it a cart filled with hay. A man covered in stitches and smoking a cigarette is driving, and he grins upon seeing the two.
“Toga!” He waves at the vampire. “Nice umbrella!”
“Twice-kun!” She lights up. “I didn’t know you worked here!”
He shrugs. “Eh, it’s just a favor for a friend.” His cigarette dangles out of his mouth, and he points to the cart of hay. “You two need a lift?”
“Yes please!” The witch grabs her girlfriend’s hand, dragging her along to the back of the tractor.
“It’s our one-year anniversary!” Himiko adds, squeezing the witch’s hand. No matter how many times it happens, she still gets butterflies when Ochako holds her hand.
“Well, congratulations!” Twice beamed. “Where would you like to celebrate first?”
Ochako stands atop a bale of hay, pointing outwards like a brave explorer. “To the petting zoo!”
He grins, and gives a mock salute before starting back up the tractor. “You got it boss!”
The cow’s soft tongue laps against Ochako’s hand, causing the witch to giggle.
“Look, Himi, isn’t she cute?” The cow noses her hand, searching for more food, and Ochako moves to petting it gently along it’s nose. She then turns to look back at the vampire, who’s watching the interaction with a pout.
She draws her hand away from the cow. “Is everything okay, sweetheart?”
Instead of answering, Himiko instead disappears into a small cloud of smoke. The sunglasses fall to the ground with the umbrella, and something flies it’s way towards Ochako.
When she feels something small burrow under her hat, she can’t help but giggle.
“Aw, are you jealous?” The witch teases, and Himiko pokes her little bat head out from underneath the brim. The vampire lets out a small trill, and Ochako coos, scratching under her chin. “Oh, you must have all the attention, don’t you?”
Himiko takes a playful bite at her finger, and Ochako laughs as she pulls her hand away.
“C’mon- want to go look at the birds?” She moves towards the sunglasses and umbrella. Himiko huffs a tiny bit, the small breath tickling her bangs. Rolling her eyes, Ochako pockets the sunglasses before looping the umbrella over her arm. “I heard that they have peacocks here!”
The vampire peeks more of her head out at that, glancing around eagerly. Ochako grabs the bag of feed on the way to the bird pen. The chickens start to cluck as they approach. Himiko squeaks in response, antagonizing some of the roosters who start to puff out their feathers at the vampire. Ochako ignores both of them, instead scattering some feed across the pen. Hens, roosters, and a few peacocks come over, pecking at the feed. She reaches down and gently pets one of the peacocks, in awe over how pretty it’s feathers are.
She feels Himiko move out from under her hat, but she isn’t worried. Her girlfriend is probably getting bored- or hungry. Actually, now that Ochako’s thinking about it, she’s getting hungry too- isn’t it almost lunchtime?
A quick glance at her phone confirms that yes, it is about time for lunch. Ochako stands back up, and looks around the petting zoo for her girlfriend.
The witch furrows her eyebrows. Huh- where is Himiko?
MAAAAAAA-
Dropping whatever feed she had left, she rushes over, and wraps her arms around her girlfriend’s waist.
Said girlfriend who is trying to climb into the goat’s pen, halfway between bat and human, baring her fangs in a manic grin.
“Just one bite!” She laughs, trying to wiggle out of the witch’s grip. “C’mon, they won’t notice!”
“They absolutely fucking will!”
“I’m not mad- just disappointed.”
“And yet, you haven’t divorced me.”
Her girlfriend freezes, and then narrows her eyes. “Don’t give me any ideas.”
The vampire giggles- she knows Ochako’s joking! Probably. Whatever- it’s hard to have not-cute thoughts when she’s eating a peanut butter and strawberry blood jelly sandwich. She swings her feet under the picnic table, and takes another bite.
The sun has risen higher in the sky, but thankfully the picnic table they’re at is under an awning so Himiko is safe. They’re sitting a couple of yards away from the barn, and more people have started to arrive. Himiko can see families with kids of all ages milling about, waving to Twice and piling on the tractor rides. They all look so happy, even as their breath forms small clouds and roses turn pink in the cold air.
Speaking of cold, Himiko’s starting to shiver a bit herself.
She swallows her bite. “Hey, ‘Chako-chan- did you bring a spare jacket?” Ochako probably did- her girlfriend is super awesome and prepared like that- but she wouldn’t mind wearing her cardigan. Oh, but that would mean that Ochako would get cold- shit. Himiko really should’ve brought her own jacket.
Ochako laughs. “Of course I did!” Himiko brightens, and Ochako fishes out a red hoodie from her backpack. “Didn’t I tell you this morning that you would get cold?” She teases.
Himiko freezes from where she’s taking the jacket, and then pouts. Oh- now she remembers that.
“It’s not like I get cold often,” she grumbled, slipping on the jacket. “I’m a vampire- I’m technically dead.”
“Half-vampire,” the witch rolls her eyes. “You’re not even immortal, and the sun doesn’t kill you, just give you a really, really bad sunburn if you’re out for too long. And- you can get cold.” A smug grin creeps across her face. “Hence why I always bring a jacket for you.”
“You keep one of everything on you,” Himiko counters, taking a spiteful bite of her sandwich. “You made and brought lunch! And you got a mini first aid kit, a bunch of pencils and glitter pens, newt eyes and bat wool and a whole bunch of other stuff- honestly, I think the one thing you don’t have is an inflatable life boat!”
“And tissues,” Ochako takes a peek inside her bag, face scrunching up in thought. “I always forget tissues…”
“Speaking of bringing things, are we allowed to bring our own lunch?” Himiko asks. “Like, don’t we have to buy something?”
Ochako blinks, confused, before gesturing to their picnic spread. “We bought apple cider from them.”
“Which is really, really good by the way,” Himiko puts down her sandwich and takes a sip of the hot cider. “But- and don’t get me wrong, I give no fucks about the law- don’t we have to buy lunch from them?”
“I’m not paying seven hundred yen for a sub-par sandwich, Himi,” she deadpans. “Besides, what’s wrong with my homemade lunch?”
“Nothing!” Himiko quickly assures. “I love it- you made my favorites!”
Ochako squints, not entirely convinced. Panicking, the vampire stuffs the rest of her sandwich into her mouth, causing her cheeks to bulge like a chipmunk. She sends her girlfriend a double thumbs up.
The witch giggles. “Alright, I get it. C’mon- finish up quickly- don’t choke! And let’s head on to the next activity.”
She swallows the rest of her lunch, not choking once. “Where are we headed?”
The vampire spins around in wonder, moving her heart-shaped sunglasses to rest on top of her head. Ochako smiles as she watches her girlfriend, the red hoodie turning her hands into sweater mittens. Her own hands are being warmed by their apple cider, Ochako offering to hold Himiko’s.
“Sunflower picking!” Himiko spins around, looking at her girlfriend with a wide smile. “I didn’t even know that was a thing!”
“It definitely is here,” the witch affirms, handing the vampire back her cider. “Go on ahead and pick one out- make sure it’s a tall one.”
“Compared to you, everything is tall,” she teases.
Using a bit of magic, Ochako enchants her cup of cider to float next to her. “You’re not that tall either, you know.”
“I got two inches on you.” She runs her fingers over the petals of a sunflower, before nodding in approval. Himiko crouches down, then snaps the stalk of the sunflower in half at the base.
“And yet,” Ochako chooses her own sunflower, using a bit of magic to cut the stalk for her, “All of these flowers are taller than us.”
The two turn to each other, both holding a sunflower that is over six feet tall. Their yellow petals stand out against the bright blue sky, yet cast a shadow over Ochako’s face and Himiko’s umbrella with their height.
These’ll do nicely, the witch thinks with a smile.
“We’re lost.”
“No, we’re not.”
“Yes we are! And I’m tired!”
Ochako stops dead in her tracks, then looks up with an angry glare. “You’re not even walking! You’re hiding under my hat again!”
“Because I’m tiiiiirrred!” Himiko groans dramatically, wings flopping onto Ochako’s forehead.
“We’re fine,” she insists, readjusting the two sunflowers and umbrella before looking back down at the map. “We just… got a little turned around.”
The vampire crawls out of Ochako’s hat, before flying a bit to the side and turning back into a human. Wordlessly, the witch hands Himiko back the umbrella while still staring at the map. “So you admit it,” Himiko pops the umbrella open. “We’re lost.”
Ignoring her, Ochako just squints up at the sky. “Which way is North again?” She glances behind her, checking the position of their shadows.
“Aaaaauuuuugghh! Can’t we just, like, hop on your broomstick and fly over this stupid maze? Or cast a spell or something?”
“No!” Ochako snaps the map shut before turning to glare at her girlfriend. “That defeats the whole purpose of a corn maze! It’s all about the journey, not the destination, the- ack! Hey-”
Himiko’s already clamoring on top of her, using her girlfriend as a human ladder so that she can see above the ears of corn. Her knee digs painfully between Ochako’s shoulder blades. Using one hand to balance herself on Ochako’s head, Himiko wedges the umbrella between her shoulder and chin as she uses the other to shield her eyes from the sun and squint across the maze.
Grinning, she looks down at her girlfriend. “Hey! I think I see the way out!”
“We’re not cutting through the corn,” the witch grumbles, moving the brim of her hat from where Himiko was accidentally shoving it into her eyeballs.
“Well, good thing I mean a way out through the maze this time.” Rolling her eyes, Himiko climbs off her girlfriend. Once her feet make contact with the hard-packed dirt, Ochako turns to glare at her as she readjusts her hat. Himiko cocks her head, feigning innocence. “What?”
She sighs, giving up. Himiko did have a point anyway, the maze wasn’t so much fun anymore as it was frustrating. “Alright, let’s get moving- sun’s going down, anyway, and we still gotta get back home in time for trick or treating.”
At the mention of candy, Himiko brightens. “Then let’s go! I’ll lead the way- but! On one condition?”
“What condition?”
She holds her hand out with a smile, and makes a grabby motion. Affectionately rolling her eyes, Ochako grabs her girlfriend’s hand. Himiko giggles, and skips off down the path, her girlfriend smiling behind her.
Her tongue sticks out the side of her mouth as she turns over the pumpkin, examining it for mold and dents. Scrunching her nose up in distaste at the large amount of warts on the back of it, she sets the pumpkin back down in the dirt with a sigh.
“Why are these things so heavy!?” Ochako blinks, then turns to look at where her girlfriend is struggling to lift a large pumpkin. Since the sun was setting, she’d put away the umbrella in the TARDIS backpack and stuck her heart-shaped shades on top of her head.
“Do you want some help?” She stands up, brushing off her skirt and making her way over.
“Please,” Himiko groans. Ochako taps the pumpkin with all five fingers, casting a minor anti-gravity spell. As the vampire lets go, the pumpkin starts to float in place near them.
Placing a hand on it, Ochako gently spins the pumpkin around to get a look. “This is a good one- and really big, too!”
“Yes!” Himiko beams proudly. “This way, we get a bunch more pumpkin seeds, too! Have you picked one out yet?”
“Not yet,” she hums, and glances back out into the field. “But I am a bit picky about my pumpkins…”
“Can I get another one, then?”
“Yeah, sure,” Ochako says, not really paying much attention. Himiko pumps her fist in victory, running down the row with her pumpkin floating behind her.
The witch climbs over the pumpkins, making her way towards a larger one she saw. Once she reaches it, Ochako crouches down to get a look.
“Oh, Uraraka! It’s good to see you!”
The greeting startles her, but when she looks up to see who it is she breaks out into a grin. “Deku-kun! I didn’t know you’d be here today!”
The ghostly boy smiles at her, floating a few inches off the ground. “Yeah! Turns out Shouto has never been to a pumpkin patch, so I convinced Kacchan to take him here with us!”
“That’s awesome! I’m here with Himiko, it’s our one year anniversary!”
Deku-kun gasps. “I almost forgot about that- congratulations!”
The witch nods. “We’ve been here all day- went to the petting zoo, did the corn maze, got apple cider, and even picked out sunflowers!”
“I didn’t know they had sunflower picking here!” Their eyes light up. “I’ll see if the two of them want to do that next! Though, I wonder if we have time- oh, but we all fare better in the moonlight anyway, and it did say that the farm is open until midnight…”
Ochako tunes out the ghosts’ muttering, and turns over the pumpkin. It looks good- fairly big, but not too heavy. Not too many warts- it’s a bit dirty, but nothing a damp washcloth can’t fix. Yeah, this one’ll do.
With a grunt, she pulls it off the vine and stands back up. Deku-kun’s still muttering about what they should do with their werewolf and vampire friends. She glances over to where Himiko is, and sees her girlfriend waving excitedly at them, her other hand holding a small pumpkin.
She turns back to the ghost. “Well, Himi and I better get going. We gotta get ready for trick-or-treating tonight.”
Deku-kun snaps out of their muttering. “Oh my god, I almost forgot about that! Thanks for the reminder- I’ll see you later?”
“Yup!” She pops the ‘p’. “Make sure to stop by!”
“We will!” Deku-kun waves goodbye as she starts to walk away.
Himiko sets the smaller pumpkin between the two larger ones, before coming to sit next to Ochako on the bench. The witch is wearing a brown trench coat with converse sneakers, while Himiko is in a long, puffy pink skirt with a blue jacket. Her girlfriend hands her a warm mug of pumpkin-spice hot chocolate, the warmth helping fight against the cold night. Marcelene, their black-and-white cat, winds herself between their legs. She then hops up, and curls up next to Ochako, resting her little leg on the witch’s thigh. The cat is dressed in a little robot costume of her own.
“So, how many trick-or-treaters do you think we’ll get?” Ochako asks, before taking a sip of her own cocoa.
“You know, you kind of sound like a grandma when you ask that,” she teases. Ochako rolls her eyes and elbows her playfully, causing Himiko to giggle. “I’m just saying!”
“Hmmm, Deku-kun said that they’d bring Bakugou and Todoroki, so that’s three…” she muses, and Himiko hums along as she takes a sip. “And I think more of our friends are going to stop by…”
“There’s some now,” Himiko adds, before excitedly waving towards the newcomers. “Happy Halloween!”
“Hey guys!” Ashido bounces up the porch steps, the alien girl’s green princess dress swishing around her ankles. “Oh, you’re both so cute!” She leans over to scratch Marcelene’s head, the cat leaning into her touch. “Is this a couple’s costume?”
“It is!” Ochako beams. “Can you guess who we are?”
“Is it some obscure sci-fi reference, kero?” Tsuyu, Ashido’s werefrog girlfriend, asks. She’s wearing a pink 1920’s flapper girl dress. “Because I have no idea who you two are supposed to be.”
“They’re obviously time-travelers from the 1950’s!” Kaminari exclaims, already swiping several pieces of candy too many from their bowl. Himiko narrows her eyes at them, and they sheepishly put a few back. The demon does pocket a few, though. Their costume is just a Mewtwo onesie, having opted to go for comfortable rather than cool.
“Well- you’re not entirely wrong,” Ochako admits. “We’re the Tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler!” She gestures to the two of them, and then towards their cat. “And Marcelene’s our K-9!”
“Oh, that’s so cute!” Ashido gushes. “I only understand those words individually and still have no idea who you are!”
“Uraraka! Are you and Toga Ten and Rose?” Deku-kun calls out, Bakugou and Todoroki trailing behind them. “That’s so cool!”
“Thank you!” She then turns to the other three. “See- someone gets it.”
“Didn’t you force them to shit through over twenty seasons of that shitty show?” Bakugou growls out. The three’s costumes look to be coordinated, each of them wearing the same pieces but in different colors- Bakugou a pinky-red, Deku-kun in green, and Todoroki in light blue.
“I prefer the term, ‘convinced.’”
“No, you definitely forced them to,” Himiko deadpans. “You forced me to, too.”
“To be fair, the end of the season two reboot emotionally ruined me,” Deku-kun admits.
“Same!” Himiko says. “And I’m upset that it did!”
“He burnt up a sun- just to say goodbye!”
“And he didn’t even get to finish saying goodbye!”
“Should I be concerned?” Todoroki asks, scrunching his eyebrows up in confusion.
“You gotta watch the show to get it,” Ochako says, her eyes lighting up.
Tsuyu moves to stand in front of Todoroki, blocking Ochako’s line of sight from her new victim. “We can talk weird sci-fi shows later, kero. There’s still more houses for us to visit.”
“Tsuyu’s right- sorry to leave so early, Uraraka,” the alien girls adds apologetically.
Ochako waves her off. “It’s alright! You kids have fun tonight. Besides, there’ll be plenty of other trick-or-treaters for us old ladies to say hi to.”
“Oh, so now you’re okay with being called an old lady,” said Himiko.
“Hush.”
“Thanks for the candy, guys!” Kaminari says, waving as they walk back down the stairs. “And happy anniversary!”
“Thank you!” Himiko calls back, and their friends all add on their congratulations as they grab their own candy before leaving.
Sighing contentedly, Ochako cuddles closer to Himiko, resting her head on her shoulder. The vampire rests her head atop Ochako’s, and watches as the stars come out. More kids are starting to come down the street, milling about in their costumes and laughing with friends.
The three pumpkins sit on the porch, the yellow firelight flickering. Both are smiling. One has stars for eyes, while the other has fangs and hearts on it’s cheeks. The smaller one sits between the two of them, a cat face carved into it.
