Work Text:
The next couple of weeks are decently uneventful for the team. They have a couple of cases, but nothing that’s too rough for them. Then the explosion happened that took Patrick’s sight.
Kimball was headed to his desk when the building alarm went off meaning they were to evacuate. He hadn’t seen Patrick yet that morning, since the man went home to get ready for work at 6am. Kim kept his eyes peeled, hoping to see Patrick in the evacuation, to know the man was okay. He ran into Rigsby who had seen Patrick, and then the two of them saw him and Lisbon running across the street. They didn’t know why, but at least Kim knew the man wasn’t stuck in the building with a potential bomb. He felt relief.
Until he saw the explosion across the street. He and Rigsby moved as a unit, rushing across the street to make sure their boss and co-worker were okay. They found them both in one piece, and Kim found he could breathe again. That was, until Lisbon called for them to call an ambulance for Jane. Rigsby immediately made the call while Kim moved to Patrick’s side. “Patrick, what’s wrong?”
Patrick reached out for Kim and relaxed when he felt the man standing in front of him. “Kimball, I can’t see anything.”
If Lisbon noticed the use of first names, she didn’t say anything at that moment.
The ambulance got there in quick time and Patrick was taken to the hospital to be checked out. Kim wanted to ride in the ambulance with him but Lisbon ordered him to find out who the victim was that had been in the van before it exploded.
It took awhile to find out the identity of one James Medina. Once he did he immediately headed to the hospital to inform Lisbon and to check on Patrick. He entered Patrick’s hospital room and relayed the information he found. He noticed that it looked like Patrick had been basically pouting about his condition. Kim asked for a rundown on Patrick and Lisbon relayed what the doctor said. Kim took the news well, and was hopeful that Patrick’s eyesight would return.
They went back to discussing the case and Patrick was adamant that the victim was truly just that, a victim in someone’s cruel game. Lisbon headed out of the room first, and Kim snuck in a quick hand squeeze with Patrick before he was forced to follow his boss, leaving Patrick all alone in the hospital.
Kimball and Rigsby picked up their top suspect, a Terry Andrews. Rigsby was interviewing the man when Patrick stumbled his way into the room. He had left the hospital against doctor’s orders. Patrick asked a few questions, before claiming they could let the man go. This led to Lisbon yelling at him for being out of the hospital and for interrupting the interview.
The rest of the case ended up being rough on Patrick. He struggled without his sight in general, though he loved how it heightened his other senses. It brought up some old client memories, like the suicide of one Carol Gentry and it ended up with Patrick passed out on the floor. After Patrick passed out, Kimball began to hover slightly, though without drawing too much attention. Patrick didn’t mind too much because it meant that Kimball was always within arm’s reach. However, that evening, Kim went with Lisbon to find out about the other client Patrick remembered, a Jill Lamont and her husband Paul Kraeger. This left the office to be just Rigsby, Van Pelt and Patrick. That’s when shit hit the fan. Van Pelt’s new boyfriend showed up, attacked Rigsby and threatened Van Pelt and Patrick. He ended up being the son of Paul and Jill, and he greatly resented Patrick for breaking up his family. They got away, but didn’t get far with Van Pelt being handcuffed and Patrick being blind. Luckily Lisbon and Kimball showed up in the nick of time.
Kimball let Lisbon take care of the boyfriend and ran to Patrick’s side. “Patrick, you alright?”
“Other than still being blind, I’m fine. Thanks to you two showing up.”
Kimball helped Patrick out of the car and led him into the building. Once he was seated on his couch, Patrick directed Kimball to where Rigsby would be. Kimball reluctantly left the man’s side to go check on his partner. Kimball woke Rigsby up and had him checked out by a paramedic, before returning to Patrick’s side. He sat on the couch next to him. Patrick leaned slightly into Kim’s side.
When they were all sent home by Lisbon, Kimball volunteered to take Patrick home. Lisbon gave them a calculating look but let them be.
Kimball took Patrick home with him.
That night, Kimball worried and fretted over Patrick, having almost lost him twice that day. Patrick found it adorable. Once Kim was sure Patrick was alright, besides his sight, Patrick dragged Kim to the bedroom, where Patrick had the best sex he ever had. Having his other senses heightened made for an intense and epic evening.
The next morning, Kim took Patrick to work and left him on his couch to go get them some tea. When he came back Patrick was without his bandages and smiled directly at him. Kimball rolled his eyes, but smiled, when Patrick gave him a slow once over and licked his lips. He was thrilled Patrick could see again.
Lisbon shot Kim a look, having caught their interaction. She motioned him towards her office. Kim nodded. He handed Patrick his tea and then followed Lisbon. Kim closed the door behind them and stood with his arms crossed over his chest. Lisbon just examined him for a moment.
“What’s going on between you and Jane?”
“We’ve grown close.”
“How close we talking?”
“How detailed do you want me to be?”
Lisbon sighed. She could guess what was going on. “There are no relationships between agents in this department.”
“Patrick’s not an agent. So that rule hasn’t been broken.”
“He counts in that rule.”
“That may be your rule, but the actual departmental rules state nothing about relationships between consultants and agents.”
“How long?”
“A couple of months.”
Lisbon knew that even as his boss, she was losing this discussion. She sighed again. “Just don’t let it affect your work. You understand?”
“Yes, boss.”
Lisbon waved Kim off and the agent left her office. Rigsby, Van Pelt and Patrick were seemingly waiting for him at Patrick’s couch.
“What did she say?” Patrick asked.
“We have nothing to worry about.”
“What would you have to worry about?” Van Pelt asked. Apparently she was the only one left on the team in the dark.
Kim and Rigsby went to explain it to her but Patrick stopped them. “She’s a smart agent, she can figure it out for herself.”
Kim shrugged, not caring either way. He went back to his desk to finish yesterday’s paperwork. Rigsby actually liked having one over on Van Pelt so he doesn’t explain it either, heading back to his own desk.
Van Pelt looked at them all, at a loss of what the conversation was about. Something between Patrick and Kimball. She remembered that they had been getting closer, but she didn’t know why they’d have to worry about that with Lisbon. Van Pelt sat at her desk and continued her work.
Instead of taking his usual nap, Patrick kept his eyes on the bull pen and the people in it. He wasn’t ready to close his eyes yet, not after just getting his vision back.
