Gimmie Shelter
Mitch and Cassidy loaded up the goods from their supply run and met up with Judy and V at the rendezvous point. However, a sandstorm was on the way. They had no chance to make it back to camp in time.
Judy launched a drone and cased out the area. “There. Found a safehouse.”
Mitch asked, “Occupied?”
“Nah, looks abandoned.”
Cassidy answered, “Can’t be too careful, Scavs’re still lootin’ the area. Damn vermin.”
V replied, “We’ll do a full patrol, check inside and out, set up a secure perimeter. And we’ll have better luck taking a gamble on a safehouse than we will tryina’ get through that storm.”
Mitch and Cassidy looked at each other and nodded. Mitch then said, “I’ll call Pan, give her a status report.”
As Mitch walked away to make the call, V took Judy’s hand in her own. “So, safehouse, huh? You know what that reminds me of.”
Judy grinned, “Our cottage for the evenin’.”
V pulled Judy closer and she whispered, “Me, you...we’ll get ourselves nice and cozy. And then...promise I’ll take it slow.”
Judy scoffed. “There ain’t no way in hell we’re doing that with the guys in the same house as us.”
“Why not?”
“Um, V? Last time we tried ‘being quiet’ we failed miserably. You, specifically. Panam couldn’t look either of us in the eye for two days straight.”
“Ugh,” V groaned. “Fine, you’re right.”
“We’ll make up for it. Remember what I’ve been telling you?”
V grinned and kissed Judy. She then answered, “Quality over quantity.”
The four of them loaded up into the SUV. Judy transferred the coordinates of the safehouse from the drone tablet to the vehicle’s onboard GPS.
Mitch navigated them away from the storm, but it was quickly approaching. Once they got to their location, they had to be quick. Thankfully, Mitch and Cassidy had lots of experience securing a location and setting up a perimeter, thanks to their military experience and their nomad roots. They passed on their knowledge to Judy and V, who both learned very quickly.
Once they arrived at the location, Mitch parked the SUV and they got to work. All four of them stepped out of the vehicles, drew their weapons - Cassidy with his revolver, Mitch with his rifle, Judy with her pistol, and V with her Black Unicorn katana - and spread out to check the perimeter. The four of them had developed a rapport and were able to successfully communicate with hand signals.
Thankfully, the area was uninhabited, and they were able to settle in without any confrontations.
Mitch and V set up security measures - motion-detection security cameras, auto turrets, and two drones with battle camouflage - before they met Judy and Cassidy inside.
“Slim pickin’s, but somethin’s better‘n nothin’,” Cassidy said.
The safehouse had a futon with a dusty, slightly torn top cushion. Down the small hallway, there was a partitioned area that could qualify as a room. The room was empty, save for a twin mattress on the floor.
“Reckon we’ll take this here and let the ladies have the bed?”
Mitch answered Cassidy. “Yeah. But no cuddling.”
“Now listen here, no promises, partner.”
V snorted and left with Judy to the partitioned area.
The sandstorm had arrived, and the wind howled. The boards creaked and groaned as the storm blew through. It was loud and the boarded up windows shook, but the safehouse held steady through the storm.
V and Judy laid back on the small mattress together. Judy put her head on V’s shoulder and ran her fingers over V’s chest. They silently looked up at the ceiling, listening to the storm, holding each other, and enjoying the moment before they fell asleep together.
The room was quiet for a while, aside from the howling storm outside and the subtle snoring coming from Mitch and Cassidy.
V then whispered, “Y’know...sometimes I forget how nice this is. Just holdin’ you, layin’ like this. Much as I like to earn a good night’s rest with you, this is preem.”
Judy yawned. She then said, “Mmm…” as she rubbed her hand on the center of V’s chest.
V kissed Judy’s forehead and sighed.
Judy sleepily said, “Can tell somethin’s on your mind. Go on and say it.”
V answered, “One night holdin’ you like this beats every night I spent alone without you in my life.”
Judy snuggled closer to V. “Then I hope you don’t mind me stickin’ around.” Judy looked up and planted a kiss on V’s lips. She then whispered, “ Te amo, V. ”
V wrapped both of her arms around Judy. “I love you, Judy Alvarez.”
The wind continued to howl outside, but the sound that V carried V to sleep was Judy’s rhythmic, deep inhales and exhales.
