11:47 pm
“You’re absolutely sure about this?” He asked, placing the book he’d just read to her onto the pile behind his headboard without particular care for where it ended up. “It is pretty late by now, you know.”
“I didn’t peg you as much of an early bird yourself.” Rheannon pointed out. “Besides, this isn’t anywhere near the latest I’ve stayed up to.”
Satan chuckled, then pulled her even closer.
October 19th. Mere minutes before it would be time to celebrate her beloved’s birthday. In all honesty, Rheannon had not thought that demons had birthdays. And even if they did, given their long lifespans, they wouldn’t see them as important.
Then again, she had not thought the most well-known demon of all would become her lover either. But a lot can—and did—happen within a few years. A lot had happened to her between the young child she had been first learning about the sins and the young woman she now was, tangled within a demon’s embrace.
11:49 pm
Tonight was no different from any other night. Reading to each other and cuddling in each other’s beds had become a regular thing ever since they’d started dating. Tonight had been Satan’s turn to read, and Rheannon had downed enough caffeine-filled food and drink to ensure she didn’t fall asleep to his soothing voice like she usually did. The story he’d read to her—a collection of Grimm’s fairy tales—would’ve kept any regular person awake anyways. But whenever he read to her, no matter what the subject matter, she’d always find herself lulled into the world of dreams.
But not tonight.
Dressed in her fluffy pink pyjamas, Rheannon nuzzled further into his chest, to which he started patting her head as though she were one of the kittens he was so fond of.
The thought rang true as Satan muttered, “Just like a cat.”
Rheannon simply smiled up at him.
11:51 pm
“9 minutes left.” Rheannon looked at the timer on her phone screen, watching as the seconds ticked by at a torturously slow pace. Satan hummed.
“You know that I’ve been alive for a very long time. Long enough that birthdays stop mattering at some point.”
A glance at him from the corner of her eye. “I do know that. I also know that that applies to all of you, and yet you celebrate each other’s birthdays regardless.”
He continued to pat her head. Normally this would have her out like a light within a few minutes, but the caffeine in her system wouldn’t allow it. She wouldn’t allow it either. “I’ve never truly understood why.”
Rheannon looked from her screen to him. She then shifted her position so she was facing him better. “Well, obviously it’s a celebration of the day you were born. If it weren’t for that day, I would’ve never met you. Just the thought makes me wanna tear up a little.” She pouted and sniffled for emphasis.
Satan shook his head, laughing. “That’s one reason to be happy about it, I suppose.” A soft sigh. “The same applies to you, of course. I know my life would be quite different, and still terribly dull indeed, had you never been born.”
“Well, that applies to a lot of people within your life, wouldn’t you say?” Rheannon tried to humbly turn the remark aside, but Satan was having none of it as he continued, “I suppose. But you’re different.” He leaned in and kissed her forehead. Rheannon hummed but said nothing further, and simply pulled out her phone to glance at the time again.
11:59 pm
“Oooh, it's almost time!” Rheannon exclaimed, quickly sitting up. Satan groaned at the sudden loss of her warmth, but soon joined her in sitting up too.
20 seconds till midnight. He gave her a weary smile. “You’re a hundred percent serious about this?”
“Absolutely! Count down with me?” Rheannon pleaded, giving him the most adorable pout she could muster.
Satan tried to frown, but the pleading look she gave him made him crack instantly, and with a sigh, he replied, “Fine.”
“Yay!” With Rheannon holding the phone between them, the pair watched as the seconds passed, until eventually…
“3…2…1…”
12:00 am
Finally. October 20th. Rheannon quickly put her phone away, safe in her pocket as Satan sighed.
“Well, there you have it.” He began. “Nothing too special really, but of course—“
“Can I kiss you?” Rheannon interrupted him, a sweet smile on her face. The sudden proposal caught the usually unflappable demon off guard, but Satan quickly regained himself and answered with a smirk, “Do you even have to ask?”
Rheannon huffed, then straddled him faster than he could blink. His eyes widened slightly, but the smirk remained as she leaned forward and pressed her lips to his. She felt his hands latch onto her sides, squeezing in a gentle motion that had her melting against him, her own hands latching onto his shoulders.
After a little while, when she finally pulled away, Rheannon then began peppering his whole face with kisses. Taking frequent pauses between her words to do so, she said, “Happy Birthday. You’re the best boyfriend anyone could ask for. I’m so excited to celebrate and spoil you today. I love you so, so, so much, never ever forget that.”
By the time she was done and her excitement had settled down, she finally noticed how frazzled his appearance now was from her sudden onslaught of affection. Rheannon giggled sheepishly. “I got a bit carried away there huh? Hehe, sorry.”
Once he finally registered it all, Satan simply smiled, looking at her with so much love in his eyes that Rheannon ended up kissing him again.
But not before he managed to say, “Don’t be.”
