“How exactly did we end up like this, again?” Cat asked, futilely attempting to move the arm pinned between her back and Mason’s chest. Somehow the two of them had gotten tangled up in some kind of netting out in the middle of nowhere.
“You mean how did you end up pressed up against me?” Mason asked, voice low, breath tracing her cheek, and hand shifting to further wrap around her thigh. Her heart rate spiked and her face turned red enough to camouflage with her hair. “I’d say it was inevitable.”
“Actually I meant how we end up trapped in this net,” she pointed out, trying her best to ignore the way her body was reacting to his presence.
“Does it really matter? We’re here now,” Behind her, she was pretty sure she felt him shrug, but she couldn’t actually turn around to check. Suddenly she felt his breath on her neck again. “We might as well make the most of it, Sweetheart.”
“I think we should try to figure out how to get out of this.”
Cat instinctually leaned back as he moved away, and the redness of her cheeks brightened when he chuckled. Still they were entangled enough that he couldn’t get far. Cat tried pulling around the arm pinned behind her, but had trouble getting it all the way around.
“Do you see anywhere that looks like a good place to unravel this net?” She asked him.
“How should I know?” He snorted.
She sighed and started searching for one herself. After a moment she felt movement behind her, and smiled to herself upon realizing that he was actually helping. This would go a lot faster with vampire eyesight. Cat quickly grew frustrated with the lack of progress she was makinging until she spotted a place by her foot that looked like it could be a good place to start unraveling the net.
She underestimated how much balance she would have in their current position, so when she bent over to examine the knot, she promptly tripped, falling onto her face. Since Mason was tied to her, her sudden fall pulled him on top of her back. He quickly pulled himself off of her, and pulled Cat into a sitting position.
“You alright Sweetheart?”
Cat stayed silent, tears of frustration beginning to well her eyes. She was afraid that if she started speaking she would cry which would be the only thing that could make their current situation any more embarrassing. She let out a breath, hoping it would calm her emotions. She reached up, to wipe the tears away before they started to fall, hoping they would escape the vampire’s notice.
“Are you crying?”
“No,” Cat sniffled, feeling a bit ridiculous, even more so when she heard him mutter a curse word, and wrap his arms around her.
“You hurt yourself in that fall?”
“No. I’m fine…” She could feel his disbelieving frown even without facing him. “You realize we’ve been stuck like this for almost an hour? It’s just really frustrating not making progress.”
Mason made a noise halfway between a grunt and a sigh in what Cat assumed was agreement. He reached up, and brushed a piece of her hair behind her ear. She reached up to grasp his hand, and realized that by falling on her face, she had managed to get her arms free.
“I’m just gonna call someone to help us,” she decided. “Because we clearly aren’t getting out of this ourselves.”
Cat tried to reach her phone in her back pocket, but realized she had traded trapped arms for trapped legs, and found herself unable to reach her phone. She groaned, pulling her arm back around.
“Mason, can you reach my phone? It's in my back pocket. I can’t reach it.”
She heard him chuckle behind her and frowned unsure what was amusing about her request. They needed help, meaning they needed to use her phone to call someone. She jumbled slightly as she felt a hand slip into both of her back pockets. Red flooded into her cheeks and her breathing grew erratic as the realization of what she’s given him permission to do sank in.
“Got it,” he whispered, leaning in close to her ear. Cat closed her eyes trying to ignore the feel of his warm breath on her skin.
“Thanks,” she squeaked out as he passed the phone to her. Cat grabbed the phone and dialed Riley, knowing that if there was anyone who could figure out where exactly they were with the limited info Cat had, it would be Riley.
“Where are you?” Riley asked instead of greeting her.
“I’m not entirely sure exactly. I’m in the woods somewhere, tangled up in some kind of netting with Mason. I can’t figure out how to untangle us. Can you get someone out here to help, please?” Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Mason roll his at her addition of the word please.
“Stay on the phone,” Riley commanded. “Since you don’t know where you are I need to trace your cell, so you need to stay on the line.” Cat heard Riley shout out something to whoever else was in the room with her before she came back on the line. “Okay, I’ve got a general idea of your location. We’ll be out there as soon as we can hold tight.”
“We will,” Cat agreed before realizing Riley had already hung up. She turned her head just enough to see Mason. “They’re on their way.”
Cat felt Mason slide her hands over her waist as he tugged her slightly so she was now sitting fully in his lap. His breath was hot against her neck, and without thinking she tilted her head over.
“Whatever are we going to do to pass the time?” He mumbled before placing a kiss across her neck. Cat gasped as his lips pressed into her skin. One of his hands slid off her waist to wrap into her hair. The other hand started snaking up her body, till she grabbed it with her own hand holding it place just above her belly button. She squirmed, but the netting around her legs prevented her from actually going anywhere, so she was really just shifting around in his lap, which just encouraged him to continue kissing her.
“I… don;t think this… is entirely appropriate right now,” She said, voice weak and breath heavy. Her protest was further weakened by the heat radiating off of both her body and her blushing cheeks.
He ignored her comment and tilted her chin so she could gaze into his stormy grey eyes. Now that they were facing each other, Mason leaned forward to kiss her lips. Cat leaned into it, moving her hands towards him, but unsure where to place them. She tentatively placed them around his neck, and upon finding no resistance left them there. With her hand off of his, Mason slid his hand around her waist and slipped in back into her back pocket.
Lost in the kisses Cat had forgotten that her legs were tangled up in a net. She forgot that they were out in the middle of nowhere, helpless until the others showed up. All that mattered at the moment was that he was holding her and kissing her. Even if it wouldn’t last.
“See, I told you they’d be fine,” Felix’s amused voice pulled Cat out of her haze. She quickly jerked away from Mason, or at least as far as she could get without falling over again or actually hurting either of them.
“Scoot as far back as you can, Kitty Cat,” Lukas instructed as he stepped forward, drawing out his pocket knife. Cat scrambled back which only led to her ending up back in Mason’s lap.
“That eager for more already, Sweetheart?” Cat was certain that if he made another comment she would actually combust.
Lukas glared at the smirking vampire as he continued cutting the net. Felix just looked between the two of them and grinned.
“I’ll go tell the others we found them,” Felix volunteered after realizing how long it was going to take.
After several agonizing moments, Lukas finally managed to cut the free, and Cat jumped out of the net as fast as she could, nearly causing herself to fall over again. This time it was Lukas that steadied her, and Cat was much more comfortable with his assistance.
“How did you guys end up in that net anyway,” Lukas asked her, eyeing it suspiciously.
“I don’t want to talk about it,” Cat muttered, rushing off with her face burning.
