For Wayhaven frights prompt: Whispers

Work Text:

“Why are you whispering?” Riley asked, looking up from the computer she was typing at.

“Because someone’s coming,” Felix answered, tugging on her arm.

Riley’s eyes widened as she allowed him to pull her away before she realized that they’d just left the computers running. She pointed at the two computers.

“We can’t just leave them there. I just got the data transferring, so I need to leave the computer plugged in until it's finished,”

“So this is going to be one of those hide at the last possible second, barely make it situations. Sounds like fun!” He flashed a grin, and Riley fought the urge to scold him, knowing she likely wouldn’t be able to keep that quiet.

“Or..” Riley started to suggest, making sure to maintain a whisper volume and grabbing her laptop in one hand, and moving the cord around with the other. “I could just set the brightness as low as possible, and place this one under the desk. No hired security would risk checking the boss’s computer when it's possible it was just left on. Then we hide till they leave.”

When Felix didn’t respond, Riley looked up at him. Her brows creased at the bizarre look on his face that was some kind of mix between pride, admiration, and attraction. None of which applied to almost getting caught snooping. Instead of speaking she held her arms up in a w shape, hoping he understood her question.

“I’m just admiring how clever you are,” He said with a grin.

Riley ignored the sensation welling in her chest at his comment, but couldn’t stop the small smile that spread across her lips. “This is not the time for that.”

“Come on,” Felix said, tugging her arm and pulling her towards one of the doors in the office. Oddly enough, it was another office, albeit slightly smaller than the first. Riley frowned as she scanned the room trying to find a good place to hide. Felix continued tugging on her arms, pulling her under the desk in this new office.

“Of all the places to hide, you pick here?” She asked, shocked enough her voice started rising above a whisper.

Felix’s hand flew over her mouth. “This just seemed like the most fun,” he whispered, ginning as Riley glared at him. “And you should remember to use your inside voice.”

Riley was about to retort when she heard the sound of footsteps herself. Unconsciously, she shifted closer to Felix, and pressed her lips shut. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest as she realized her plan must have failed. Why did she think it would work in the first place? She gritted her teeth and silently berated herself, wondering what they were going to do when they finally got caught.

Her tense body started to relax when she felt a set of fingers intertwine with hers. She glanced at her now clasped hand, then allowed her gaze to trail up the arm attached to the hand until her eyes met Felix’s glimmering amber ones. Before she realized what she was doing she leaned into his shoulder, and placed her free hand on the side of his neck.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered. It was the same volume as they had been speaking the whole time, yet there was something far more intense about it this time, far more raw and intimate. “They’re going to find us, and it’s all going to be my fault.”

“You don’t know that?” He protested, volume raising enough to unsettle Riley’s nerves again. “We’ll be okay. You have nothing to apologize for.”

She didn’t quite believe him, but she nodded anyway to keep him from speaking again, so he was less likely to give away their position. She pressed her face back into his neck, and counted the seconds until the guards found them. Miraculously, Riley heard the footsteps fade, and lifted her head to glance at Felix. His neck was craned out as if he was listening to something at the edge of his hearing, so Riley stayed quiet.

It wasn’t for several more moments that he gestured to Riley that it was okay to climb out from under the desk. He crawled out first, and offered her assistance. She accepted his hands, and couldn’t stop the gasp that left her lips at the strength with which he tugged her forward. She couldn’t find it in herself to scold him for not giving her a warning when she realized she was now wrapped in his arms and pressed against his chest. Riley tilted her head up, and once again found herself staring into his charming amber gaze.

She leaned back to give herself some distance, but didn’t entirely separate herself. “Are they gone?”

“Ohh, yeah they’ve been gone a while,” He answered, grinning with a twinkle in her eye.

“So why’d we have to stay down there so long?” She demanded.

“For fun?” Felix offered, but she didn’t quite believe him. “Because I just liked having you in such close proximity.”

“You shouldn’t tease me like that, it's not fair.” She blinked, and fully stepped out of his grasp. She then turned away completely and started walking back over to where she’d hid her computer.

“Riley,” Felix called softly, catching her arm. “You know I was being serious right? It’s not just teasing. You’re more than just a bit of fun for me.”

Her heart ached for how much she wanted it to be true. He sounded so sincere, it was almost impossible not to, but she thought the others were sincere too. Given how well those turned out, she just couldn’t trust her own judgement anymore.

Riley tugged her arm loose without responding, and turned her attention to her laptop. Thankfully, something had gone right with this mission, so the file had properly transferred. She unplugged it, and started packing up her things.

“We should get out of here as soon as possible,” She told him, forcing her voice to remain steady.

As she turned to leave, she found herself caught in his grasp. He cupped her cheek. “We’re not leaving here until you understand that I’m serious.”

She leaned into his hand. “I want to believe that, and sometimes I think you actually do believe itt, but trust me, it won’t last. I need to get these files to Adam, and if we don’t get out here, he’ll come looking for us.”

The threat of the commanding agent coming after them was enough to make Felix release her, but she could tell by the look on his face that as soon as they made it back to the warehouse, this conversation would continue, meaning she had the time it took to get back and report to Adam to figure out a way out of it.
