He was just about to get up and furiously leave. He already had the five-dollar bill crumbled up next to the black coffee - that would be enough for the tip, he guessed - when a peal of soft laughter came through the air.
The rough sound of wheels against tiles, then the radio’s sound turned into a song.
And then a voice.
A cheesy song, one he’d heard. Maybe it was in one of Tonia’s old movies, or maybe Teucer had hoarded it in one of the million tapes Childe had burnt for him. From wherever it was, it was familiar. Catchy and contagious. The light tapping of his pen unconsciously matched its rhythm, and despite himself, the corner of his lips tug upwards.
It was not enough to call it a smile. But it was more than Childe had felt in a long while.
