Work Text:

Oikawa and Matsukawa were never close.

Sure, they hung out in high school but their "friendship" was nothing more than silent greetings and head-nods in the hallway. They were friends because Oikawa was friends with Hanamaki and hanamaki liked Matsukawa. So mutual respect was established between them and that's how their high school years passed.

The first time Oikawa spoke to Matsukawa without incentive from Hanamaki was a year after graduation and a semester deep into university. The first time Oikawa texted Matsukawa he excused it by saying that he's "reconnecting with an old friend" (and it was definitely not his desperation for some close friends), Soon enough the texting became a casual thing. Their texts were superficial at best, surface-level "how are you?"'s and "how's class?", sometimes Matsukawa would ask about Iwaizumi, other times he would ask about Oikawa's university team. Yet Oikawa would still catch himself smiling at Matsukawa's lazy texts and single emoji replies.

This slowly became a routine, Oikawa quickly got into the habit of texting Matsukawa as soon as he woke up. Somedays Matsukawa would text him first. He would ask Oikawa if he ate or when he slept, he would bring up topics from past conversations. What once started as a courtesy text once a week turned into day-long conversations, with inside jokes and heartfelt moments. Before he even realized it, these talks became a vital part of Oikawa's day. The closer they became the more Oikawa's fondness grew. Matsukawa started coming up more and more in his and Iwaizumi's facetime calls, and the more Iwaizumi teased him about his crush the deeper he went into denial.

Finally, after months of talking and LOTS of coaxing from Iwaizumi, Oikawa proposed the idea of a meet-up. With Matsukawa being on board, they started planning a weekend together in Tokyo. Oikawa promised to show Matsukawa all of his favorite spots. The week leading up to the meeting Matsukawa's texts had a little more emotion to them, an added sincerity. As time passed and Oikawa crossed out the days on his calendar slowly inching closer to Saturday he started to get more nervous, It was a strange mix of giddiness and anxiety. He questioned himself, wondering why his stomach filled with butterflies every time he thought about Matsukawa. He would mentally smack himself every time it happened, he had an array of excuses for his feelings and even more excuses for why he shouldn't be feeling this way, "it's just matsun" he thought "it's not even a big deal we hung out loads in high school this is no different" he would tell Iwaizumi.

Friday he facetimed Iwaizumi to freak out over what to wear when he goes to meet Matsukawa at the train station. He had his laptop propped up on his desk for Iwaizumi to watch him obliterate his closet. He was ransacking through his clothes while Iwaizumi worked on his uni assignments "I don't understand why you're so freaked out shittykawa" Oikawa turned back to glare at his best friend then went back to trying to find a pair of pants to match the sweater he picked "Iwa-chan! obviously, because it's my first time hanging out with matsun! it has to be perfect" Iwaizumi snickered through the call "you want it all to be perfect yet your room is a mess? where is he gonna sleep when he gets here? will you make him sleep on the floor?"

Oikawa turned back to look at Iwaizumi with wide eyes, warmth creeping up his neck and making its way to his face. "Obviously not!! I got him a futon! it's not like he's gonna sleep in bed with me or anything.....DON'T BE A PERV IWA-CHAN YUCK!!" Iwaizumi smirked at the incredibly flustered Oikawa a shit-eating grin taking over his face "When did I ever say anything about sharing a bed shittykawa?" Oikawa stuffed his face into his hands, groaning loudly. He turned back to his closet grabbing the two pairs of pants he had picked out "Shut up iwa-chan! now, help me pick! which one would look better?"

The icy morning air felt like glass shards cutting through Oikawa's skin. He brings his scarf higher up his face, protecting his nose from the cold morning breeze. He walks to the train station in a hurry, scared that he might be late, but also desperate to get out of the cold. He gets there with a few minutes to spare and scans the bustling station, it's only 7 in the morning yet the place is crowded. His attention is caught by the announcement from the speakers informing the people in the station of the bullet train's arrival from Sendai to Tokyo.

Oikawa watches people get off the train intently, his eyes carefully scan over their faces in search of his friend's face. His breath catches when he finally sees him, Matsukawa stands out like a sore thumb in the crowd, towering over the others in the station. Oikawa's legs move as if they have a mind of their own. Matsukawa notices Oikawa approaching him and starts to walk towards the boy, before Oikawa knew it he was engulfed in a tight hug. His mind haywires, he stands frozen in shock. Out of all the scenarios his mind came up with on the way here, this was not one of them.

He slowly moves his arms, wrapping them around Matsukawa's back. Letting the warmth from the other's body overtake him, ignoring all the looks from the other people in the station.

They walk to the bus station together, Oikawa pulling along Matsukawa's tiny carry-on suitcase. They walk side by side, shoulders brushing against each other as they exchanged pleasantries. Oikawa was delighted by the atmosphere around them, his biggest fear was that Matsukawa would come all the way here only for things to become incredibly awkward. It seems, however, that their energy over text easily translated over to real life, Oikawa did most of the talking while Matsukawa intently Listened to him, happy to give Oikawa his undivided attention as long as it meant watching his face light up with every topic he talked about.

They made it back to Oikawa's dorm in record time, rushing into the place in a hurry to escape the cold weather. Oikawa puts Matsukawa's suitcase away before welcoming him into his dorm. Matsukawa carefully walked in, admiring the small space that Oikawa has made into his home, he sits on the bed looking at the walls covered in volleyball memorabilia. His gaze shifts over the group pictures and team photos, pictures of him and iwaizumi that make Matsun sour for some reason, and photos of their small group hanging out together. He smiles to himself feeling nostalgia overtaking his emotions. He flops down on the bed burying his face in Oikawa's pillow, a big mistake. He's immediately overtaken by Oikawa's scent one that he's slowly growing to miss.

Oikawa giggles at his antics, Matsukawa turns to admire the boy he's grown so fond of over these last few months. Oikawa is putting their coats in the closet that seems to be overflowing with clothes and Matsukawa wonders if he's ever going to see that coat again. Oikawa turns to look at him, a gentle blush on his face "uh matsun if you want to take a bath and get some sleep you can do that, I still have a bit of school work to do so you can just take a nap on my bed" Matsukawa turns so he laying on his back "yeah I could use that right now" Oikawa's face lights up "great! here's the bathroom...if you need anything call me" Matsukawa grumbles while shuffling off the bed, unbuckling his pants on the way to the bathroom making Oikawa flush red.

Matsukawa disappears into the bathroom, and Oikawa has a tiny breakdown silently squealing into his hands. He sends Iwaizumi am SOS text, before turning his attention to the textbooks pilling up on his desk and getting ready to put this anxious energy into work.

By the time Matsukawa's back from his bath, Oikawa has completely engrossed himself in his work. Matsukawa stood by the door, watching Oikawa furiously typing away at his laptop as if nothing else in the room exists around him. He clears his throat, breaking the trance Oikawa is in. He turns around in his swivel chair to face Matsukawa who was standing with a single towel around his waist. Oikawa's breath stutters when he sees Matsukawa, he immediately rips his gaze away from Matsukawa's torso, face flushing red with embarrassment. Matsukawa walks to his suitcase, feeling satisfied with the reaction he got out of the pretty boy "what are you working on" he listens to Oikawa stutter for a few seconds before giving a comprehensive response 'Uh yeah, Uhm...just some extra crunching for my Kinesiology class" Matsukawa hums while he shuffles through his clothes "mind if I change here?" Oikawa nods his head turning back to his desk "don't worry I won't look" Matsukawa chuckles as he dresses into his pajamas, behind him Oikawa stretches his arms back groaning as he stretches "hey why don't you take a nap too?" Oikawa turns back to him before looking back at his work chewing on his bottom lip "I don't know.." Matsukawa reaches out to Oikawa, big hands clasping onto his shoulders "you're tense, just come I'm sure you're tired" Oikawa leans his head back against Matsukawa's torso looking up at him through tufts of brown hair "yeah...I need a nap"

They end up in bed together. The twin bed shoved into Oikawa's dorm is definitely not big enough for both of them and the lack of space between them is very noticeable. Oikawa presses his face against Matsukawa's arm, he looks at Matsukawa's face, admiring the gentle slope of his nose, and the slight frown on his forehead, he watches Matsukawa sleep, being too anxious to fall asleep himself. He turns to press himself into Matsukawa, using this situation to his advantage, and get all cuddly with his crush. Soon enough the nervousness dissipates and sleep overtakes him.

They wake up tangled together in a bundle. Limbs splayed over each other and blanket wrapped around them, Matsukawa sits up and looks down at Oikawa, he smiles at the bedhead and red splotches on his face from where he smushed too hard against Matsukawa, Oikawa groans and stretches, before shoving his face back into the pillows, Matsukawa reaches over and tickles his fingers dancing across the nape of his neck. Oikawa giggles loudly and reaches over to tickle Matukawa's ribs in retaliation. A tickle war breaks out between the two boys, the sound of giggles and laughter fills the room while they wrestle on the bed, fighting for dominance. Both of them determined to win, the war ended with Oikawa using his whole body weight to pin Matsukawa down on the mattress. Oikawa sat on top of Matsukawa's back trying to push him down into the bed.

They were breathing heavily, all the energy accumulated from their nap wasted on this tickle war. Oikawa flopped down next to Matsukawa on the bed laughing lightly. Matsukawa turned his head to face him, moving his hand up to move Oikawa's hair out of his face, thumb running along his hairline wiping the sheen of sweat off. Oikawa grabbed Matsukawa's hand, pressing the boy's palm against his cheek "I missed you matsun" his voice was mellow, soft. Matsukawa's eyes softened, his thumb caressed Oikawa's cheek "I missed you too tōru" he felt Oikawa's face get warm under his palm, Matsukawa gave Oikawa a lopsided grin as he watched Oikawa's face flush pink.

They eventually left the bed, taking turns in the shower and getting dressed to go out and eat. They had spent most of their day in bed, it was now 3pm and they were starving. Matsukawa was rummaging through Oikawa's closet in search of his coat, Oikawa was humming lightly while adjusting his belt, not paying a single thought to Matsukawa's frustration. Matsukawa let out an exasperated sigh, pinching Oikawa's shoulder to gain his attention. Oikawa yelped and looked up at him with a glare "ouch!! matsun! what was that for?" Matsukawa gives him a blank look and Oikawa looks away with a huff, puffing his cheeks out. Matsukawa sighs, yet again then mumbles "where did you put my coat?" Oikawa looks up at him, big brown eyes illuminated under the yellow light in the room, he gets up and takes a single look at his closet before pulling Matsukawa's coat out.

Matsukawa looks at him as if he created the coat out of thin air. Oikawa hands him the coat with an annoyed look "it was hung up right here with my jackets and you messed my whole closet up looking for it?" Matsukawa looks away, sporting a guilty look on his face "my bad. I'll fix it myself when we get back okay?" Oikawa outs at him, shrugging his own jacket on before walking towards the front door "let's see if you'll still have the energy to do that after we eat all that food"

They walked to the restaurant together, huddling close to one another to combat the cold. Oikawa was uncharacteristically quiet. Matsukawa eyes him curiously, Oikawa was chewing on his bottom lip, his nose was bright red and his cheeks had a sight blush to them. Matsukawa looked down at his hands that were tightly tucked into his pockets. Realization hit him and he cleared his throat to get Oikawa's attention. Oikawa looks up at him curiously, Matsukawa silently offers his arm and Oikawa loops his own arm with it, a smile gracing his chewed-up lips. Matsukawa is like a heater, waves of warmth radiate off his body, and Oikawa finds himself relaxing.

Matsukawa notices Oikawa's shoulders slump, he smiles at Oikawa feeling comfortable with him. They make their way into the restaurant, finding a small table near the window, giving them a pretty view of the damp street and grey skies, Matsukawa admires Oikawa who's staring out the window "why are you so nervous?" the question catches Oikawa off guard, he stutters a little before giving up and letting his head drop on the table. Matsukawa chuckles at the endearing scene, resting his chin on his palm while watching Oikawa throw a silent temper tantrum "tōru?" Oikawa lifts his head up, an embarrassed look on his face. Matsukawa uses this moment to his advantage "is this a date?" he watches color rise up Oikawa's neck to his face, glossy brown eyes stare back at him "uh..date?...do you want it to be" Oikawa mentally winces at his stutter, mad at himself for sounding so unconfident. Matsukawa's face calms his nerves, His smile is gentle and his eyes are serene "yeah. I want it to be. Do you?" Oikawa smiles, bright and big "yeah! I want it to be too"

Lunch went smoothly, the nervous energy in the air decapitating after they both established their feelings. Oikawa was glad that he could freely admire Matsukawa's face, Matsukawa was glad that he could touch Oikawa without being awkward. Matsukawa was never good with his words, but he prided himself on being honest and straightforward. Usually, that attitude came back to bite him the ass, however at times like this, with a person like Oikawa who likes to dance around what he has to say. Never coming out and outright saying it, his attitude benefited him more than anything. The bad part of his brute attitude was how his throat would suddenly close up whenever he tried to show verbal affection, and so he settled for touch. Soft fingers brushed against Oikawa's knuckles, playing footsies under the table while they ate.

They held hands while Oikawa showed him around Tokyo. He let Oikawa rest his head on his shoulder while they rode the bus, let him sit on his lap because the other seats in the park were wet. he brushed his fingers through the soft brown waves, caressed his cheeks and jaw, pecks his forehead whenever he felt his heart soar. They ended up at the top of the Tokyo tower, the illuminated ceiling reflecting the lights from the city.

They stood side by side, gazing out at the large city, being enamored by the colors of the city. However more beautiful than all the lights in Tokyo combined, was Oikawa. Despite the magnificent view, Matsukawa's eyes would keep wandering off to Oikawa's face. He felt fireworks explode in his chest every time he looked at the brunette boy, felt butterflies invade his stomach every time Oikawa laughed. Matsukawa knew he was too deep in, he knew he was in love the second he saw Oikawa standing at the station, waiting for him. There was no point in denying his feelings anymore, His heart knew it before his mind did, it was about time he faced his fears.

He moved behind Oikawa, wrapping his arms around the other boy's torso bringing him into a tight hug. He buried his face into Oikawa's neck, inhaling the scent of light cologne, it felt like he was standing out in the ocean. Oikawa moved his hand up to run it through Matsukawa's curls. Fingers playing with the ringlets draped over his shoulder. Matsukawa pulled away to turn Oikawa to him.

The view in front of them was completely forgotten as they opted to gaze into each other's eyes instead. Matsukawa felt his chest tighten "tōru" Oikawa licked his lips "issei" Matsukawa inhaled sharply, Hands moving to cup Oikawa's face "I like you so much tōru, so much." it was as if the world around them had frozen, the only thing existing I the space they occupied being them, Oikawa grinned softly "I like you too issei, more than you could imagine" that was all Matsukawa needed. He leaned down capturing Oikawa's lips in a sweet kiss, flavors of caramel and strawberry overtaking his mouth, from the desert they ate together. The kiss didn't last long, But it conveyed everything it needed. They held onto each other tightly, desperate to keep the momentum going. Never wanting it to end.
