"Seb? No. Just no."
Lewis sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose as Sebastian presents the little Christmas tree bauble to him. It's in the shape of a chicken and it faintly sparkles with glitter.
"But it's perfect." Sebastian pouts at their boyfriend. "Come on, Lew. Please?"
Lewis takes one look at his partner and sighs. The big blue eyes and sad pout are almost impossible to ignore. "Okay okay. We can get it. But please. Our tree has a theme. How does a chicken go with the theme?"
"It represents our chickens." Sebastian grins, adding it to the trolley. "Besides. It's our tree. We don't need to make it so rigid."
"Seb. Our tree theme is lgbt. How does that fit in at all?" He gestures to the boxed tree in the trolley which is rainbow coloured and the pack of rainbow baubles as well.
Sebastian huffs and shakes their head. "You need fun pieces in the tree and the chicken is fun." They move to walk down the isle.
Lewis rolls his eyes and follows them. "A chicken among baubles that read 'love is love' and 'queer'?" He asks, amused.
Suddenly Sebastian gasps and races towards the end of the aisle, retrieving from one of the plastic boxes a bauble in the shape of an F1 car.
"Oh no." Lewis sighs deeply and hurries down the aisle. "Seb, baby we don't need that..put that back."
"Lew it's perfect!" Sebastian defends, holding the bauble in awe. "I want it. We need it."
"It has Jev's race number on it!" Lewis points out.
"We can sharpie that out." Sebastian puts it in the trolley, meeting his eyes challengingly.
Lewis takes a second and sighs again. "Okay..the garnish F1 car can go on the tree too. Lord knows Jev fits the theme."
"What by being a flamboyant gay?" Sebastian laughs, mirth in their eyes.
Lewis has to laugh at that. "I think he would kill you for saying that, but yes."
Sebastian suddenly moves closer and cups Lewis' cheek, pulling him in for a soft kiss. "I love you. Yeah? Thank you for doing all this for me."
Sebastian had had a tough time of late. After being outed as gay and non binary by one of the photographers of the paddock, Sebastian had been trying to turn the tables on the situation by using their platform to campaign for lgbt rights. Lewis had been helping and supporting them through it all. Now he had the idea to make an lgbt tree for Sebastian. Something Sebastian could make with him and see shine every night.
Lewis has never seen Sebastian so happy.
"Anything for you." Lewis whispers softly, nuzzling their nose gently and pulling them closer for more soft kisses.
Sebastian melts against him, feeling so relaxed and happy. They pull back from the kiss smiling broadly. "I really do love you."
"I know." Lewis gives them a warm smile. "Come on. Let's take this lot to the check out."
Sebastian laces their arm through Lewis' and rests their head on his shoulder as Lewis pushes the trolley through the store and to the checkout. Their heart lighter then it had been in days.
Together it seemed. They could face anything.
Although, that is not how our story ends.
Sebastian goes back to the store one day when Lewis is busy and comes back out with 5 more racing cars. They arrange them around the rainbow tree and use a sharpie to change the numbers on the back to theirs, Lewis', Max, Lando and Kimi's racing numbers.
Lewis tries to protest that the cars do not match the theme, but Sebastian has none of it, proudly placing their car first in the line.
A few days later the number 44 car is in front of Sebastian's.
Lewis pretends to not know how that happened but over the next few days cars 5 and 44 keep switching positions right up to Christmas eve wherein Sebastian places their car first and warns Lewis on pain of death about removing it.
It's one of the best Christmas trees they ever had.
