Chapter Text

It had been a long several months. Things had gone sideways after Kim had been kidnapped and shot. Hank was thankful she was alive and okay but what happened with Hailey and Roy – that was another problem. His own home life had gone up in flames literally when his and Laura’s house was set on fire by their nanny. They had lost Henry and baby Laura and the outcome for Charlotte was not much better as she was at Lurie’s still in the ICU. Fortunately, the four boys had been able to get out with only Rick spraining an ankle and Steve with a broken wrist as they had climbed down the emergency escape ladder. Grant and Flynn had been the ones to wake them and quickly grabbed up Max and Penny as Hank and Laura went to get the babies. Just as they got to the landing, Judith their nanny came out screaming. The woman pulled a gun and shot at Hank hitting him in the shoulder. Laura came up behind him, took his gun, and unloaded the weapon into the woman. Hank had never taken Laura to the range but her accuracy was unnerving. They both had run up to the room that was engulfed in flames and tried to enter but they soon realized it was impossible. Thankfully, firehouse 51 arrived and were able to get inside and get the babies out. It was then that they realized their children had been strangled and only Charlotte had survived. The death of two of their three babies had devastated Laura and Hank. Instead of pulling away from each other, they held each other through it all. Hank had taken a leave of absence from work while they dealt with the loss and finding a new home. Against everything, he told himself he agreed that moving into the old Murphy mansion was the best idea until they could find a new home.

On top of all of this, Laura’s sister Rebecca was going through her own issues. Hank never suspected that his brother in law, his detective, would be a complete louse. Becca and Jay had moved into his old house and as far as he knew, things were fine. She was due in late July with their first child – everything should have been fine. That is until Hank started to notice how Hailey would touch Jay and Jay was not pulling away like the married man he was. Then when Rebecca went into labor at 34 weeks and Jay did not show up at the hospital, Hank knew that there was an issue. He later learned from Laura, that Jay had moved out. Apparently, Jay felt that the two had rushed into the relationship, a baby and marriage. He was not ready for it and he did not feel he could talk to Rebecca about work. With separation papers filed and a divorce quickly coming, his sister in law went into labor and without the father of her child there to support her, she instead had her brother in law Will Halstead holding her hand and helping her through.

Running his hand over his face, he was at a loss for words when it came to his detectives. He was ready to transfer one or both out of intelligence. Jay for being an asshole, and Hailey for being a homewrecker. Looking out at the bullpen, he knew he needed to make some decisions. Yeah Hailey had the Roy thing, but honestly, there was no body so…

“Hey Sarge, you okay?” Kim asked from the doorway.

“Yeah, just thinking.”

Kim walks into the office and pulls the door closed, “How is Laura?”

“She’s doing okay. Losing the kids has been hard but,” he pauses as he feels the ever feeling of sadness and tears well up. “How are you doing?”

Kim looks at him for a second, “Okay, um, did Jay really leave Becca for Hailey?”

Hank shook his head, “Yeah, he hasn’t even seen John.”

“What?”

“I just don’t know Kim, he had a beautiful wife, a baby on the way and”

“Laura must be pissed.”

“Let me just say this, Thanksgiving will not be the usual happy family event this year.”

“Uh yeah, I mean, I’m still good, right,” Kim jokes.

“Yes, you Kevin and Adam are still on the good list.”

Laura moved around the baby room as she put away the baby clothes for her sister. “Are you sure you don’t want to stay here?”

Rebecca smiled down at her little boy as she nursed him, “I can’t just live off you Laura.”

“Yes you can. I have this huge house and,”

“Will asked if Johnny and I will move in with him.”

Turning around, “What?”

“He’s been with me through all of this. He did the Lamaze when Jay was working, he was there for the delivery, and he has been a father to Johnny”

“And a husband?”

“No,” as the woman gets bashful.

Laura smiles at her sister, “It’s okay to want that. I mean I am still very angry with Jay for his behavior and everything but you deserve to be happy. And don’t tell me Will isn’t interested.”

“Oh he is, it’s just I don’t want to start anything before my first mistake is over.”

“What did your lawyer say?”

“That we didn’t have much joint property so there shouldn’t be much of a problem. Plus since Jay has refused to even see John and”

“Are you worried about Jay’s reaction to you being with Will?”

“Why should I? He has not even wanted to see the baby and honestly, I do not care. Jay was a horrible mistake; I should have known something was going to go wrong when I talked to Erin.”

“Oh and what does she say?”

Laughing, “That when she and Lon come home for Thanksgiving, it’s going to take just about everything in her to keep big brother from beating the crap out of him.”

“He deserves it. Clark is so livid; you know that Bonnie was being attached to Hailey when she broke up with him. She’s a horrible person.”

“Anyway, Will is going to stop by after his shift and we are going to look at the house he bought.”

“Do you want me to watch Johnny?”

“No, Will says we are a package deal and he wants to spend as much time with both of us.”
