    The main reason Maddie had chosen to move into this apartment complex was because of its gated security, and Buck would never sacrifice his sister's sense of safety just so he wouldn't feel awkward about denying a stranger piggybacked access to the apartment complex.

    Buck just wished that in practice, he'd been just a second faster in closing the gate in the stranger's face.
